This Week in the Law School
Welcome back! We hope you had a restful and relaxing holiday vacation. Thank you to all of our students and instructors who made this year's Wintersession our best yet. For those who couldn't or didn't participate this year, consider joining us next winter for our fourth installment.
A busy spring semester awaits, and we jump right into things this week with a terrific MLK Day event with Professors Brown and Lovelace today at noon, and a visit from former Obama Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy Tuesday night.
Looking ahead, we have a few important events on the books already. Please plan to attend the Fuchs Lecture (Feb. 7), Stewart Lecture (Feb. 14), and Hall Lecture (Feb. 21) next month. Spring Break runs from March 12 through March 17. The Snyder Lecture takes place April 4, final exams begin April 23, and we'll honor the Class of 2018 on Saturday, May 5.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday: No Classes
Before the Dream: "I Have A Dream" from the Beginning
Join the Black Law Students Association and our Student Bar Association for a screening of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech in its entirety. A contextual introduction will be provided by Prof. Timothy Lovelace, with an additional presentation of other speeches of Dr. King prior to the March on Washington. Prof. Kevin Brown will also facilitate an open discussion. Lunch will be served. Moot Court Room, noon.

Composite Photo Make-up

How to Use the OCI Tab

BLSA General Body Meeting
Please join the Black Law Students Association for our first meeting of the year. We will discuss our exciting programs for the upcoming months and place orders for BLSA swag. Lunch will be served. Room 121, noon.
PILF General Body Meeting
This meeting is mandatory for all current and prospective PILF members. If you are not currently a member of PILF but would like to learn how to receive summer scholarship funding for public interest internships, you must attend this meeting. We will discuss PILF's upcoming event, Singing for Summer Salaries. Lunch will be served. Room 125, noon.
ILJ Associate Meeting
This meeting is for all Indiana Law Journal associates and managing editors to review common cite-checking questions. Room 120, noon.
POP Returning Volunteer Training
This refresher training is for all POP volunteers who have already completed new volunteer training a previous semester and would like to continue volunteering this spring. Attendance is mandatory. (Prospective POP volunteers should see Friday's entry for information.) Non-pizza lunch provided. Room 122, noon.
ELS: Q&A with Obama EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy
Join the Environmental Law Society for an off-the-record Q&A session with Gina McCarthy, the EPA administrator during the Obama Administration. All law students are welcome to attend. Room 120, 7:30 p.m.

Coffee & Careers
Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the Career Services Office is so delightful...so come warm up with a hot cup of coffee or tea and some yummy snacks for the first Coffee & Careers of the spring semester. We'll be brewing from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. We'll also have a trivia contest and helpful job search tips. If you can, please bring your own mug. CSO office.

Judicial Clerkships Workshop: Are You Ready to Apply?
Professor Inge Van der Cruysse will cover FAQs on how to start your judicial clerkship application process, and what you need to know at this stage of your judicial clerkship search.

Student Animal Legal Defense Fund: Documentary Viewing of Unlocking the Cage

Equal Justice Works: Building Your Public Interest Career Path
As you build your public interest law career, are you using all the tools and resources available to you from Equal Justice Works? Claire Cusella, program manager for Law School Engagement & Advocacy at Equal Justice Works will provide an overview of the programming EJW offers that help you both while in law school and in launching your public interest career. SELS Panel: Music Law in the Digital Age
Join the Sports & Entertainment Law Society as we invite AJ Correale (Frost Brown Todd) and Leigh Isaac (Secretly Group) to discuss navigating the laws and the business practices surrounding the music industry in the digital age. Topics such as YouTube controls, piracy, and lawsuits over abusing "mixtape" fair use claims are all on the table. Free lunch will be provided. Moot Court Room, noon.

Pro Bono Training: IU Will Preparation Program
The Indiana University Office of the Vice President and General Counsel, with assistance from Indiana Law students, offers will preparation services at no charge to university employees, students, and parents. The program addresses the fact that more than 50 percent of American adults do not have a will, and as many as 70 percent have not designated a health care power of attorney. To participate in this program, you will need to attend this entire pro bono training, which is conducted by Indianapolis law firm Ice Miller. A live question-and-answer session will be held at the end of the program with Kristine Bouaichi, Ice Miller's chair of the Personal Services Group. Lunch will be served and all training materials will be provided to those who RSVP on CareerNet by noon on Wednesday.
Protective Order Project New Volunteer Training
We welcome all students who are interested in becoming a POP volunteer to attend this required new volunteer training. Non-pizza lunch provided. Room 120, noon to 3 p.m.
CLSC Speaker Series: Kathryn Kroeper
The Center for Law, Society & Culture welcomes Kathryn Kroeper, who will present "Marriage Equality: On the Books and On the Ground? Beliefs and Behavior Towards Same-Sex and Interracial Couples in the Wedding Industry." Henderson House, noon.
Faculty and Staff News
Prof. Hannah Buxbaum has been appointed Indiana University's next vice president for international affairs. She will begin her role on July 1. Congratulations, Prof. Buxbaum!
Prof. Steve Sanders published an op-ed in the New York Times Sunday Review Dec. 2 about the closely watched Supreme Court case involving a baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple. He also published an article in the inaugural American Constitution Society Supreme Court Review about Pavan v. Smith, which held that states may not discriminate in issuing birth certificates for children born into same-sex marriages. At the Association of American Law Schools annual meeting last week in San Diego, he moderated a panel about campus speech controversies and served on another panel examining intellectual diversity in law schools.
Congratulations to CIPR's Audrey Cyr and husband Dan, '15, on the birth of their daughter Juniper!
Best wishes to Chrys Ford, who is leaving the Office of Admissions for a position with the IU Registrar's Office. Chrys has done a wonderful job as director of admissions operations, and she will be greatly missed!

30th Annual Rapheal M. Prevot Jr. Barristers' Ball
Join BLSA for a night of dinner and dancing at our signature event of the year. Barristers' Ball is a celebration of our distinguished legal community and enduring commitment to diversity and unity. This year's theme is "An Evening at the Savoy," a tribute to the rich legacy of the Harlem Renaissance that will continue to inspire ingenuity for endless generations. Be sure to dress to impress! Ticket sales begin January 29th at noon and tickets are limited. The cost to attend is $65.
Basic Mediation and Restorative Justice Training
The Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) offers a 40-hour training program for community members interested in learning about conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative justice. Participants will enhance their interpersonal skills in communication and listening, problem solving, and negotiation, and they will increase their understanding of restorative justice philosophy and methods, the sources of conflict, and the processes leading to constructive conflict resolution. The training should benefit any community member concerned with managing conflict and its resolution. The training provides the background and skills necessary to work as a community mediator and restorative justice practitioner and qualifies participants to volunteer in CJAM's programs.
The winter training will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. over five weekend days: February 10, 11, 17, 18, and 24 at the Law School. The training will be led by senior mediators and restorative justice practitioners. Tuition is $300 or $260 if received by January 15. Scholarships are available. How to Schedule an Event
An online form is available to plan and schedule meetings. Please use this form to request a room, notify Indiana Law Annotated, and send other information about your event. You will receive confirmation that your room has been reserved after your request has been processed. When filling out your event description, please provide all information possible, especially if you are requesting that the event be publicized.
ILA Submissions
Indiana Law Annotated is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Submit information and articles for ILA to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. Entries may be edited to ensure consistent presentation. If you're requesting a room, submit all information (including the room request) by emailing (lawrooms@indiana.edu). If you have questions about an item appearing in the ILA, please contact James Boyd (joboyd@indiana.edu; phone 855-0156). Indiana Law Annotated is archived online.
Audio-Video Services
