Summer study abroad
A number of international summer opportunities exist for Indiana Law students, including the Stewart Fellows Global Externship Program; the University of San Diego School of Law programs; and other overseas study programs through our partner schools and other ABA-approved law schools.
University of San Diego Law School consortium programs
Indiana Law students have the opportunity to study law overseas during the summer and earn 2 to 5 credits as part of a consortium relationship with the USD Institute on International and Comparative Law, a summer-study program sponsored by the University of San Diego School of Law. Programs in London and Paris introduce students to foreign and international legal institutions during an intensive four- to five-week academic session. Each session offers courses that take advantage of the city’s unique resources, and all courses are taught in English. The Paris program runs early June through early July and the London program runs early to late July. See website for details and each summer’s program focus.
Paris is one of the most important centers of international law practice in the world, and the front from which the civil law system flowed. Its monuments, museums and restaurants make it one of the most pleasant cities in the world. Established in 1973 as the first summer law program on the continent of Europe, USD's Paris program focuses on public international law.
One of the principal centers of international law practice and the prime center of financial law practice, London's timeless mix of old and new makes it one of Europe's hippest cities. Classes are held at The Dickson Poon School of Law at King's College, in the heart of the British legal and political world and surrounded by major global law firms. Students interested in business law and international negotiations will find this program just their cup of tea. The London program, established in 1979, focuses on international business law.
Partner school programs
Additional opportunities exist for summer study abroad at our exchange partner schools. Please ask Dean Davis for more information as new programs arise frequently. Several Indiana Law students have taken part in the Bucerius Law School intensive summer programs in law.
Each July, Bucerius Law School welcomes advanced law students and young professionals to its campus in Hamburg, Germany for three, challenging three-week summer programs in International Business Law, Licensing Transactions in Intellectual Property, and Legal Technology and Operations.
Other partner universities offer summer programs that may be of interest, including Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Paris II, National Taiwan University and University of Auckland. Please explore the partners’ websites on the Semester Exchange page and contact Dean Lesley Davis to discuss options.
ABA-approved law school summer programs
Students who cannot find a program that meets their needs through Maurer and its affiliated programs may propose to take part in another ABA-approved law school’s summer program. The ABA website has a list of such summer study programs. Please discuss your plans with Dean Davis and Mr. Paul Leopold so you can confirm the availability of financial aid and transferrable credit.
