This Week in the Law School
We're thrilled to welcome Milt and Judi Stewart to Baier Hall today for the official naming of the Center on the Global Legal Profession. The Stewarts have been longstanding supporters of the school and our students, and we would love to have you in the Moot Court Room at 4 p.m. today. Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie will deliver remarks along with several other dignitaries. We will also honor Prof. Jayanth Krishnan, who is being named the Milt and Judi Stewart Professor of Law.
Speaking of the Stewarts, today is the deadline to apply for Stewart Fellowships in several countries. See 'Announcements' for full details. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity.
Finally, the American Bar Association will be here next week for the Law School's accreditation process. As part of their visit, the site team will be holding an open meeting with the student body. Dean Parrish will send an email with further details, but plan to attend this session next Monday, Oct. 23, at 2:45 p.m. in the Moot Court Room.

PAD Meeting and "What Should I Be Doing Now?" Session
Phi Alpha Delta is holding its general body meeting to disclose the state of the fraternity and upcoming events. PAD members are required to attend one general body meeting a semester, and the executive board encourages attendance at all meetings. Following a short, general body meeting (20 minutes), the executive board will be discussing and answering questions regarding what they did as 1L students, after having been in school for the first half of their 1L fall semester. Come and learn about outlining, finals week preparation, and managing your stress load from 2Ls who have been in your shoes. Room 122, noon.

ELS Lunch Discussion with Janet McCabe
Join the Environmental Law Society for a lunch time discussion with Janet McCabe. Ms. McCabe was the acting assistant administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation at the Environmental Protection Agency during the Obama Administration. All students are welcome to attend, and a non-pizza lunch will be provided. Room 120, noon.
Presidential Management Fellows Alternative Gateways Into Federal Service
The PMF program is a flagship leadership development program at the entry level for advanced degree candidates. While not a program limited to law students and lawyers, this nearly 40-year program provides amazing leadership development, PMF alumni network, and advancement opportunities. Career Services Office Director Alisa Rosales will provide an overview of the program and how to put your best foot forward in the application and interviewing process.

The Kinsey Institute and Changing Cultural Contexts: 60 Years After US v. 31 Photographs
2017 marks the 60th anniversary of U.S. v. 31 Photographs, a 1957 federal district court decision in a case in which the Kinsey Institute prevailed against efforts by the U.S. government to prevent the collection of sexually explicit materials alleged to be "obscene." This important decision introduced the concept of "variable obscenity" and thereby expanded access to sexually explicit materials by academic researchers and others. This panel will examine the decision and its legacy, its place in the development of the constitutional doctrine of obscenity and other unprotected expression, its profound impact on the Kinsey Institute and institutions across the country, and its ramifications for artists and others. Panelists will include Prof. Dawn Johnsen; New York photographer Barbara Nitke; and Hallimeda Allinson, a cultural historian and doctoral candidate in IU's Department of History. The panel will be moderated by Rebecca Fasman, Kinsey's manager of traveling exhibitions. Special thanks to the Michael Rosen, the Kinsey Institute, and the American Constitution Society for their sponsorship. Please note: There will be sexually explicit images shown at this event. Town Hall with Dean Parrish
All law students, faculty, and staff are invited to this semester's Town Hall meeting with Dean Austen Parrish. Come hear your Dean's "State of the School" address and learn more about the strategic initiatives moving us forward into a new year. The Town Hall will be in its usual format, with the Dean first providing a short address to the students followed by a question and answer session for you to voice any concerns. ILAP Secure Facilities Training
This training is to prepare volunteers who are visiting USP Terre Haute with the Inmate Legal Assistance Project on basic dress code, security, privacy, and other expectations. Room 335, 5 p.m.

Illinois Public Interest and Pro Bono Opportunities… with Funding!
Passionate about public interest work and looking for a possible paid position this summer? If so, please join the Career Services Office for a session to learn more about the Public Interest Law Initiative's Summer Internship and Fellowship Programs from their program manager, Brent Page. PILI facilitates placement at various public interest organizations throughout Illinois and provides stipends to support these positions. Environmental Law Society Autumn Reception
Come join the Environmental Law Society for an Autumn Reception at Cardinal Spirits. All law students, faculty, and significant others are invited to enjoy an evening together with good food, good drinks, and great company. 1L Academic Session: Exam Bootcamp

Socctoberfest
Come get to know your colleagues on the soccer pitch as we host our annual Socctoberfest event. The event was designed to help JD and international students get to know one another better through sport. Games begin at 5:30 p.m., with a cookout to follow. Faculty and Staff News
The Environment, Law, and History Blog recently featured Prof. RobFischman's research (with Lydia Barbash-Riley, '16) on empirical environmental law scholarship. The subject will also be the focus of the environmental law section panel at the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools.
Over fall break, Prof. Pamela Foohey presented her new paper, "Life in the Sweatbox" (co-authored with Professors Robert Lawless, Katherine Porter, and Deborah Thorne), as part of the Seattle University School of Law's faculty workshop and during the Twelfth Conference on Empirical Legal Studies held at Cornell Law School. Prof. Foohey also participated as discussant during the Property Implications of the Sharing Economy Workshop hosted by Penn State Law in University Park, co-sponsored by the AALS Section on Commercial & Related Consumer Law, of which she currently is chair.
The Uniform Law Commission released its Uniform Regulation of Virtual-Currency Businesses Act on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Prof. Sarah Jane Hughes served as the reporter for the project. Professor Hughes thanks Dean Parrish and Executive Associate Dean Donna Nagy, and all of her students during the last academic years for their support and understanding of her work. Indiana Law students and alumni who have questions about the act can email Prof. Hughes (sjhughes@indiana.edu).
Congratulations to Conservation Law Clinic Professor Jeff Hyman, who made his second argument before the Indiana Supreme Court on Sept. 28. The case will determine the extent of public rights to use the Lake Michigan shore in Indiana under the state public trust doctrine.
Announcements
Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser
Join the Black Law Students Association in raising breast cancer awareness for the remainder of October. Pink ribbons will be sold in the lobby during the lunch hour at a minimum donation of $1. All proceeds will be sent to the Indiana Women in Need Foundation. Later this month, BLSA will also host a "pink out" day, encouraging students, faculty, and administrators to wear pink in support of breast cancer victims and survivors.
Gong Show Tickets
BLSA is hosting the Law School's annual talent show, the Gong Show, on November 2nd at Serendipity Martini Bar. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the show begins at 8:30 p.m. Tickets will be sold this week and next during the lunch hour. Please support your fellow classmates as they showcase their unique hidden talents! General admission is $10. Tickets for dues-paying BLSA members are $7.
Stewart Fellows Application Deadline Oct. 16
Applications for the Stewart Fellows Overseas Externship Program placements in Argentina, Brazil, Cambodia, Mexico, Thailand and Vietnam are currently being accepted from 1L and 2L students. For more information about the placements, please contact Ms. Lara Gose (lgose@indiana.edu) or see the Center's presence on the Law School's website. Application requires submission of a cover letter and resume to Ms. Gose at the Stewart Center on the Global Legal Profession (cglp@indiana.edu). The final day to submit applications for these placements is at 11:50 p.m. on Monday, October 16. Please note that the application process is the same for placements in China, India, Japan, Poland, and South Korea, but the deadlines for those countries are at the beginning of the Spring 2018 semester.
