This Week in the Law School
Welcome to the start of the 2017-18 academic year! 1Ls, we're thrilled you've joined us. We also want to extend a special welcome to our new international and exchange students, and we're delighted our returning students are back.
While you were gone we took over the house on the corner of Third and Henderson streets. We're calling it – creatively – Henderson House. It is the new home of our Center for Constitutional Democracy and Center for Law, Society & Culture, with space for seminar and conference rooms for all. You'll find Professors Joe Hoffmann, Tim Morrison, Victor Quintanilla (newly appointed director of the CLSC), and David Williams and Susan Williams there along with CCD and CLSC personnel.
This week we are pleased to welcome our Dean's Global Advisory Board for their inaugural meeting this Friday and Saturday. Introduce yourself to some of our amazing alumni working around the globe.
Follow our official Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds for up-to-date info as it becomes available. Dean Austen Parrish (@austenparrish) also has a Twitter addiction and is eager to share your photos and news.
We look forward to a positive and productive year with you all. As always, let us know what we can do to improve your experience. We're here to help in any way we can.
Finally, we'll experience a 94 percent solar eclipse today around 2:25 p.m. Do not stare directly into the sun!

Basic Mediation and Restorative Justice Training
The Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) offers a 40-hour training program for community members interested in learning about conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative justice. Participants will enhance their interpersonal skills in communication and listening, problem solving, and negotiation, and they will increase their understanding of restorative justice philosophy and methods, the sources of conflict, and the processes leading to constructive conflict resolution. The training should benefit any community member concerned with managing conflict and its resolution. The training provides the background and skills necessary to work as a community mediator and restorative justice practitioner and qualifies participants to volunteer in CJAM's programs. The fall training will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. over five weekend days, September 9-10, 16-17, and 23 at the Law School. The training will be led by senior mediators and restorative justice practitioners. Tuition is $300, or $260 if received by Aug. 28. Scholarships are available. For more information, e-mail training@cjamcenter.org or call 336-8677. Go to our website, www.cjamcenter.org, to download an application. Payment can be made by credit card at the website or by check with your application.
