This Week in the Law School
Welcome to our new 1L, graduate and exchange students, faculty, staff, and to our returning folks. Today begins the 51st volume of Indiana Law Annotated, which means we've now been doing this for more than a quarter-century. Where does the time go?
Before we begin, a few ground rules. Get your submissions in on time! Noon. Thursdays. Write it down, take a picture, get it tattooed on your left forearm. Whatever helps you remember. Second, get all of the details in your listing correct! Who? What? When? Where? Why? These are all good questions to ask yourself when writing your submission. This saves us having to ask you — oftentimes at 6 p.m. on a Sunday — for essential details. Finally, proper grammar and spelling are expected. BONUS TIP! It's 2016! We no longer have to put two spaces in between a period and the first letter of the following sentence.

Pro Bono Fair
Come learn about all of the ways you can get involved in pro bono work during your time at Indiana Law. All seven of the Law School's pro bono projects and three community organizations will be available to answer questions and give out information. The pro bono fair is a wonderful way to explore different avenues to reach Indiana Law's 60 hour aspirational goal. Don't miss out! Main Lobby, noon.

This is the annual student organization fair open to all law students to learn about our more than 40 student-run groups and projects. Main Lobby, noon.
Student Bar Association Elections and Committee Position Call-out Meeting
Are you interested in joining the Student Bar Association or applying for a position on a faculty committee or non-faculty committee? If so, please join your SBA representatives for a brief presentation about these exciting opportunities. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session. LLSA Call-out Meeting
The Latino Law Student Association wants you! We welcome both Latino/Latina law students and all individuals interested in Latino culture, history, and legal issues. We are an inclusive organization that advocates and discusses legal, political, and social issues that affect all minority groups and allies. Room 120, 6 p.m.

Volunteer in the Office of Admissions by Becoming a Student Ambassador
As an Indiana Law JD student you have the opportunity to play a significant role in recruiting efforts, and the Office of Admissions would appreciate your help. As a student ambassador, you will meet with prospective students, provide them a tour of the Law School, and bring them to a class. Being a student ambassador is a commitment of a few hours over the course of each semester. Your efforts help show prospective students the depth and breadth of our students, the faculty, and the programs. The informational meeting will cover the requirements for being a student ambassador and the information you will need to know. Lunch will be provided. Room 124, noon.

Protective Order Project Refresher Training
The Protective Order Project will be holding a mandatory refresher training for any returning students interested in participating in the organization during the upcoming school year. Room 124, noon.
International Law Society Call-Out Meeting
Did you know that the farthest city from Indianapolis is Perth, Australia? Did you also know that if you hopped on a plane in Indianapolis you could be in Perth in about 30 hours? Our world has become smaller and it is likely that throughout your legal career you will experience some kind of international law. For all students interested in international law, please join us for our call-out meeting to learn about the International Law Society and our upcoming events. A delicious lunch will be provided. Faculty News
Over the summer, Prof. Leandra Lederman presented her paper entitled "To What Extent Does Enforcement Crowd Out Voluntary Tax Compliance?" in two places, the Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation in the UK and the Institute for Austrian and International Tax Law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business in Austria. She also joined with five other tax professors in filing an amicus brief in the Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit in support of the IRS in Altera Corp. v. Commissioner. In early August, she spoke on a panel on "The Academic Scholarship Submission Process: Changes and Recommendations" at the Southeastern Association of Law Schools conference in Florida. In April, she joined a group of tax professors in starting a new tax blog, the Surly Subgroup.
Professor Steve Sanders has been named Henry H.H. Remak Distinguished Scholar for 2016-17 by IU's Institute for Advanced Study. In this capacity, Prof. Sanders will chair a year-long interdisciplinary seminar involving faculty from around the campus, as well as a series of prominent outside scholars, focused on the theme of "Dignity, Equality, and Social Justice."
Staff News
We are pleased to welcome Kendra Abercrombie to her new role as assistant director of admissions and Elizabeth "Libby" Pfotenhauer as a new faculty secretary. Both look forward to working with you. We are sad to report that Michelle Trumbo, electronic services librarian, is leaving us for Washington, DC. We wish her all the best!
Staff are also encouraged to nominate someone for a 2016 Staff Merit Award. There are three categories (service, support, and professional staff) and the deadline to nominate someone is Friday, Sept. 9. Nominate a colleague today!

Announcing New Dean's Writing Fellows
The legal writing faculty are pleased to announce this year's Dean's Writing Fellows: 3L Paige Coomer and 2Ls Chelsea Chalk, Stephanie Goldkopf, Mary Mancuso, Drew Meek, Jacy Rush, and Allison Scarlott. The Dean's Writing Fellow position connects outstanding upper-class students with a legal writing professor and one section of the first-year Legal Research and Writing course. The writing faculty look forward to working with the fellows to enhance the strengths and reputation of Indiana Law students as superlative writers.
Case Western Reserve University Case Classic Trial Competition
CWRU is holding the very first edition of their new mock trial competition November 12-13 in Cleveland. Come hone your trial advocacy skills in front of real judges and practitioners. The problem will be an insurance fraud case. Any current 2L or 3L is eligible to participate. If interested, please contact Evan Stahr (estahr@indiana.edu) by Friday.
2nd Annual Jerome Hall Law Library Welcome Week
Donuts, coffee, and library swag can only mean one thing - the Jerome Hall Law Library Welcome Week is back! Basic Mediation and Restorative Justice Training
The Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) offers a 40-hour training program for community members interested in learning about conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative justice. Participants will enhance their interpersonal skills in communication and listening, problem solving, and negotiation, and they will increase their understanding of restorative justice philosophy and methods, the sources of conflict, and the processes leading to constructive conflict resolution. The training should benefit any community member concerned with managing conflict and its resolution. The training provides the background and skills necessary to work as a community mediator and restorative justice practitioner and qualifies participants to volunteer in CJAM's programs. The training will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. over five weekend days: September 10-11, 24-25, and Oct 1. at the Law School. The training will be led by senior mediators and restorative justice practitioners. Tuition is $300, $275 if received by August 27th. Scholarships are available. How to Schedule an Event
An online form is available to plan and schedule meetings. Please use this form to request a room, notify Indiana Law Annotated, and send other information about your event. You will receive confirmation that your room has been reserved after your request has been processed. When filling out your event description, please provide all information possible, especially if you are requesting that the event be publicized.
ILA Submissions
Indiana Law Annotated is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Submit information and articles for ILA to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. Entries may be edited to ensure consistent presentation. If you're requesting a room, submit all information (including the room request) by emailing (lawrooms@indiana.edu). If you have questions about an item appearing in the ILA, please contact James Boyd (joboyd@indiana.edu; phone 855-0156). Indiana Law Annotated is archived online.
Audio-Video Services
