This Week in the Law School
Join Dean Parrish for an informal afternoon chat on Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Law Library Lounge area. He will listen to your comments, answer any questions, and reveal whether he thinks Adnan really did it. (Or was it Jay?)
Two major events take place today. At 4:30 p.m., ACS, BLSA, LLSA, and MELSA are sponsoring a timely and topical event focusing on the tragic police-action shooting that claimed the life of John Crawford III in an Ohio Walmart. Attorneys representing Crawford's family will be here to shed light on the case. Afterward, at 7:30 p.m., CAGS and CSME welcome the Palestinian Ambassador to the United Nations. Both are tremendous opportunities to hear from expert sources on issues affecting our nation and world.
Why do tax lawyers always wear belts? Because they find pants with lots of loopholes. (They can't all be winners.) What do you call a group of five young tax lawyers? A wonderful panel on Wednesday at noon.

The Ohio Walmart Killing of John Crawford III: A Tragic Police-Action Shooting
As the nation grapples with vital issues of racial tension and criminal justice in the aftermath of several high-profile police-action killings, attorneys Michael Wright and Richard Schulte will discuss their representation of the family of John Crawford III, a 22-year-old African American man killed by police in August while he was shopping at a Walmart. In December, Crawford's family filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Beavercreek, the two responding officers, the city's police chief and Walmart. This event is expected to draw a substantial crowd; please plan on arriving early to guarantee a seat. Moot Court Room, 4:30 p.m.
A Lecture and Discussion with Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour
The Center for the Study of the Middle East and the Center on American and Global Security welcome Dr. Riyad H. Mansour, the Palestinian Ambassador to the United Nations. Amb. Mansour was born to a refugee family that lived in the city of Ramallah in the Occupied West Bank. In 1967, Amb. Mansour started his college education in the United States. Beginning at an early age, he has always been involved in Palestinian politics and began his career in the Palestinian diplomatic service in 1983 at the Permanent Observer Mission of the Palestine Liberation Organization to the United Nations. He was appointed Ambassador and Permanent Observer of Palestine to the UN in 2005 and since 2012 he has been Ambassador and Permanent Observer to the State of Palestine to the UN. A Day in the Life of a Young Tax Lawyer
The goal of this teleconference is to give listeners insight into what life is like for a junior tax lawyer practicing at the U.S. Treasury, U.S. Tax Court, Big-4 Accounting Firms, and law firms. The speakers, junior tax attorneys working at these places, will share their perspectives on how they ended up where they are, what their jobs entail, and tips on landing a position. Jury Focus Group
The Marion County Public Defender Agency has invited all Maurer students, staff, and faculty (and their family and friends) to participate in a jury focus group for an upcoming high-profile trial involving extensive forensic issues. The three-hour exercise will take place on Thursday, January 22. You may choose either the morning or afternoon session: 9 a.m. to noon, or 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. This is a great chance to get an insider's view of an experienced litigator's case strategy, and will be especially valuable for students considering careers as prosecutors or defense attorneys as well as those with a special interest in trial advocacy. CACR Director's Update
In this talk, Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research Director Von Welch will discuss recent and ongoing CACR activities and accomplishments, plans for the future, and opportunities for collaboration in this ever-expanding field of cybersecurity. Founded in 2003, CACR brings together interdisciplinary researchers in cybersecurity at Indiana University along with operational expertise. The CACR has generated over $16 million in research funding from a range of sources. Lunch provided. Room 335, noon.

Faculty News
Prof. Pamela Foohey presented her paper, "When Faith Falls Short: The Bankruptcy Decision," at the panel hosted by the Commercial and Related Consumer Law section of the Association of American Law Schools during its recent annual meeting. Her paper was chosen from a call for papers.

2015 Milton Stewart Fellowship Applications Due January 25
The 2015 Milton Stewart Fellows Overseas Externship Program is now accepting applications from 1Ls and 2Ls for externship opportunities in Brazil, China, India, Japan, and South Korea. Information about these opportunities and the application process is posted on Indiana Law CareerNet. Interested students should contact Ms. Lara Gose (lgose@indiana.edu) in the Office of International Programs (Law 220) with questions. The application period will close January 25, 2015.
CJAM Mediation Training in February and March
The Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) offers a 48-hour training program for those interested in learning about conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative justice. Participants will enhance their interpersonal skills in communication and listening, problem solving, and negotiation, and they will increase their understanding of restorative justice philosophy and methods, the sources of conflict, and the processes leading to constructive conflict resolution. The training will benefit any community member concerned with managing conflict and its resolution. The training provides the background and skills necessary to work as a community mediator and restorative justice practitioner and qualifies participants to volunteer in CJAM's programs. The Winter/Spring 2015 training will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., February 7 & 8, 21 & 22, and March 7 & 8 at the Law School in Room 214. The training will be led by senior mediators and restorative justice practitioners. Tuition is $300, early bird registration is $250 if received and paid by January 23. Scholarships are available.
