SBA Semester Student Feedback Session
Join your SBA representatives for our semester student feedback session. It's come to our attention that part of the student body is unaware of what SBA does. We want to change that and share with you what we do, and how we do it. This is a great opportunity to ask your representatives questions, and talk about what SBA can do for you. Your SBA reps do so much for the school and students, and we want to tell you all about it. We are your voice to the faculty and administration. We also want your feedback. Let us know how we can improve your experience here at Maurer. Lunch will be provided. Room 125, noon.
Christian Legal Society Weekly Bible Study
All students who are interested in learning more about the Christian Legal Society or interested in engaging in Bible study are welcome. Room 120, noon.

Andrew Bunger from Career Services will be in attendance. Bring your lunch and join us. Room 122, noon.
CSME Lecture: Forging a Convention for Crimes Against Humanity
The Center for the Study of the Middle East presents a lecture by Professor Leila Sadat. In the aftermath of the horrors of the Second World War, the international community responded to the mass violations of human rights norms by adopting treaties that clearly defined and outlawed genocide and war crimes. Yet, to date, there is still no single body of international instruments that defines and outlaws crimes against humanity. Professor Sadat, of the Washington University School of Law and director of the Whitney R. Harris World Law Institute, will present and discuss a draft prepared and proposed by a group of the world's leading experts on the topic, in the hope that their draft will become the basis of a future international treaty. This event is co-sponsored with the Middle Eastern Law Students Association (MELSA). Lunch will be provided. Moot Court Room, noon.
Outlining
As part of the Law School's academic strategies program, Student Affairs Fellows Francesca Cardillo and Casey Judge will present "Synthesizing Learning" twice this week. Room 120, 4:30-5:30 p.m.

Disorientation: Finding Your Passion and Coming Full Circle-Police Research (Again)?!
The National Lawyers Guild-Indiana University Chapter is holding a series of "disorientation" conversations. These discussions will feature different professors speaking on their law school experiences and how they maintained their passions. Room 213, noon.

Room 120, noon.
Wednesday, October 22
Indiana Court of Appeals Oral Argument
Plan to attend the Indiana Court of Appeals oral argument in Handy v. P.C. Building Materials, Inc. on Wednesday, Oct. 22. Sharon Handy appeals the trial court's entry of summary judgment in favor of P.C. Building Materials Inc., PC Properties LLC, David A. Stemler, and Karen L. Stemler (collectively, "PC") on Handy's negligence claim against PC.
Handy sued PC for an injury she sustained while on property owned by PC. Handy entered onto the P.C. Building Materials store property to look at some granite countertops for sale that were leaning against the outside wall of the store, just to the side of the front entrance. The store was closed at the time. Handy pulled one of the leaning countertops toward her body to measure the second countertop that was behind it, when both countertops fell forward onto her foot, causing an injury to her toe.
On appeal, the parties disagree as to Handy's status on the property at the time of the injury. PC maintains that Handy was a trespasser, or at best a licensee, to whom PC owed only a duty to refrain from willfully or wantonly injuring or acting in a manner to increase her peril. Handy contends that she was an invitee/business visitor with an implied invitation to enter the premises and that PC owed her the duty to exercise reasonable care for her protection.
PC responds that even assuming Handy qualified as an invitee, the danger posed by the granite countertops was known or obvious to Handy, and therefore PC breached no duty to her as a matter of law. Judges Patricia A. Riley, Paul D. Mathias, and Terry A. Crone will preside. To download briefs, court documents, and/or watch the livestream, visit the Law School's page for the event. Moot Court Room, noon.

Professor Madeira, Colleague Conducting Student Survey

All students enrolled in American law schools are eligible to participate. The survey is available through this link. Participants will not be compensated.
Summer Research Survey
Ashley Ahlbrand, the educational technology librarian, wants to hear from students. She's interested in learning more about research demands at your summer jobs. She has created a brief survey about your summer research practices (where you worked, what you were asked to do, what databases you had access to, etc.). It should take fewer than 10 minutes to fill out, and would be very helpful to her research. You can access the survey here. Your responses are anonymous, and may be used both to inform future legal research instruction by the law librarians, and in publication of Ashley's research results on this topic. The survey will be open through the end of October. Any questions about this research can be directed to Ashley Ahlbrand, aaahlbra@indiana.edu, (812) 855-6613, Reference Office 105A.

Elevator Reconstruction To Begin This Week
Beginning this week, the mechanicals in the elevator will be removed and completely rebuilt, and the interior will be refurbished. The result will be a much more pleasant and reliable ride, but the elevator will be out of commission for the rest of the semester.
We would like to ask you to use the stairs to move throughout the building during this period. If you are not able to do so, the library elevator is available for your convenience. To gain access to the library (and then to the elevator) from the ground floor, you may enter through the double doors next to the SBA Bookstore. To gain access from the second or third floors, faculty and staff may use their SMAF key. Students who are not able to use the stairs have been contacted individually and given a key, but if we have left anyone out, please see Dean Turchi. The alarms will be deactivated on the inside of the library doors so you can exit without setting them off.
Thank you in advance for your understanding. If you have any questions or suggestions, please see Linda Fariss in the library or Dean Turchi in 240.
