Monday, February 17
Professor Michael Tonry on "Causes and Cures of Racial Disparities in Sentencing and Imprisonment"
Professor Michael Tonry of the University of Minnesota will speak on this topic, which acknowledges that black offenders are sentenced somewhat more harshly than whites and punished much more severely. Solutions are easy to formulate, explain, and justify but have seldom been adopted or enacted. Policy makers so far have done no more than nibble at the edges of mass imprisonment. Join Prof. Tonry for the exploration of this important issue. Additional sponsors include the IU Department of Criminal Justice, Skip Elliott Youth Fund and the Center for Research on Race & Ethnicity in Society. Lunch provided. Moot Court Room, noon.
The 3L Job Search
Presented by Kenny Tatum, Assistant Dean of the Office of Career & Professional Development. Non-pizza lunch provided to those who RSVP at least 24 hours in advance. Room 125, noon.
Law and Drama Society Casting Call
The Law and Drama Society will be holding auditions this week for its play, Greater Tuna. This play is a hilarious account of life in Tuna, Texas, a small town with plenty of eccentric characters. The play will be performed Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29. All are welcome to these low-pressure auditions where we will determine your desired level of involvement in the play. Auditions will be held in the library room 406A on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5:30-7:00. If you want to audition but cannot make any of those times, please email Sarah Domin at svdomin@indiana.edu to set up an audition time.
CLS Bible Study
Bible study with Christian Legal Society. All are welcome. Library room 206E, noon.
ILS Lecture: Proliferation of International Courts
Please join the International Law Society as we host Professor Timothy Waters who will be giving a lecture about the proliferation of international courts, especially as a new default response to conflict, and the broader judicialization of diplomacy and international relations — trends that are complex and problematic, but also highly relevant for students thinking about careers in international law. Room 121, noon.
The Black Man: The Experience
Join BLSA as we take a hard look at the role of the black man in society. We will debunk myths and stereotypes, discuss how we can improve his image, and in turn the image of the black community. Room 310, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, February 18
