OCPD Tip of the Week: Make Your OCPD Appointment Online
You can now schedule appointments with OCPD counselors David, Andrew, and Debbie online. Login to Symplicity; on the far right side of the page under the heading "Career Tools & Advising" you will see a "Request an Appointment." That will allow you to select a counselor, day and time. You will then receive an email requesting information about the type of counseling appointment you would like to have so our counselors can be better prepared for the appointment. Once you return the form to the office your appointment will be confirmed.

Stewart Fellows Overseas Internship Program and Other International Opportunities for Summer 2014
Are you interested in including international experience in your law school activities? Learn more about the options available to you as a Maurer Law student, including the Stewart Fellows Overseas Internship Program (applications due January 31), the Eric T. Werner Global Cyber Security Policy Advancement Exchange Program and the Microsoft Internship in China, and summer study abroad programs. (More details about summer study abroad options will be provided at an information session to be held later in February.) The session will be led by Dean Lesley Davis and Ms. Lara Gose from the Office of International Programs, and alumni of these programs will be on hand to share their experiences and answer questions. Public Interest Workshop
A presentation on public interest career paths, fellowship opportunities, funding options, etc. with insights from Paul Leopold of Financial Aid, Kate Holley, JD '13 Equal Justice Works Fellow; Steve Sharpe, JD'05, former Skadden Fellow; and Andrew Bunger of the OCPD. Lunch provided to those who RSVP at least 24 hours in advance. Room 125, noon.

Access to Justice Pledge Week
Pledge to complete 60 hours of pro bono service by graduation. Stop by AJP's table from noon to 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, or Wednesday to sign your pledge, and ask the AJP fellows any questions you may have about pro bono opportunities or reporting your hours. It's not too late to start volunteering with a pro bono group! All you need to do to get started is to check out the ethics training video from the library circulation desk, watch it, and then email AJP at wedogood@indiana.edu for a short questionnaire.

What is Marriage?
Join the Federalist Society as we host Sherif Girgis, a Yale law student and Princeton Ph.D. candidate, and Professor Steve Sanders, who will explore two fundamental questions about the nature of marriage. First, is marriage the committed long-term partnership of any two adults, or is it inherently the kind of bond that only a man and woman can form? Second, which of these two visions of marriage should a state's marriage laws reflect? Lunch will be provided to all who attend. Moot Court Room, noon.

The 1L summer is your chance to test drive and explore careers so you can discover what fits best for you. This presentation will cover general information about the application process, where and how to search, and strategies for getting the most out of the experience. Indiana and the Freedom to Marry: Rejecting HJR-3
In light of the extensive media coverage of Indiana's constitutional marriage amendment, the Maurer School of Law's chapter of the American Constitution Society and its co-sponsors will be hosting Evan Wolfson, the Founder and President of Freedom to Marry, to speak about HJR-3, Indiana, and marriage equality. Mr. Wolfson will be introduced by IU Provost Lauren Robel, who will provide Indiana University's stance on the marriage amendment and its impact on the university and the state as a whole. In his capacity as President of Freedom to Marry, Mr. Wolfson has delivered many speeches, debated several opponents of marriage equality, and written a book on the importance of why marriage matters. Evan Wolfson is considered an expert on the matter and promises to bring an incredible level of experience to his speech. Protective Order Project Welcome Back Meeting

Environmental Law Speaker: Prof. Waterhouse
Professor Carlton Waterhouse will be speaking about his career with the EPA and his involvement with environmental justice issues. He attended law school at Howard University where he graduated in 1991. After law school, he began his career with the U.S. EPA where he was in the Office of General Counsel in Washington, D.C. He served as chief counsel for the agency and was a regional expert on environmental justice. In his time with the EPA, his responsibilities included enforcement actions, the development of regional and national policy on environmental justice, and the application of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to the EPA permitting actions. He is currently a law professor at the IU McKinney School of Law. Our traditional selection of veggie pizza from Avers will be provided. Room 214, noon.

Stewart Fellows Program Accepting Applications
Applications for the 2014 Milton Stewart Fellows Overseas Internship Program are now being accepted through January 31, 2014. 1Ls and 2Ls are invited to apply through Symplicity. Countries of placement in 2014 include Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Japan, and South Korea. Students may apply to more than one program. Fluency in the local language is required for internships in Argentina, Brazil and China. For questions about the Stewart Fellows Program, contact Ms. Lara Gose (lgose@indiana.edu). For help with Symplicity, please contact Ms. Kim Bunge (kbunge@indiana.edu). Review of applications will begin immediately after the deadline with first-round interviews taking place in early February.
Study Abroad Applications for 2014-2015 Due Feb. 7
Information about all Maurer international opportunities and study abroad application are available. Please plan to attend the upcoming Semester Abroad Information Session on Monday, February 3. CJAM Conflict Resolution Training
Basic Mediation Training: The Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) offers a 32-hour basic mediation training for any community member interested in helping facilitate community mediation. The winter training will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. over two weekends, February 8-9 and 22-23, at the IU Maurer School of Law. Participants who complete the training are eligible to work as CJAM volunteer mediators; however, any community member interested in learning basic mediation skills is welcome to participate. The training will be led by Professor Emeritus of Law, Ed Greenebaum. Tuition is $250, with scholarships available.
Restorative Justice Practitioner Training: Restorative Justice Practitioner Training explores the philosophy and methods of restorative justice as reflected and implemented in CJAM's restorative justice programs. The RJP training will be Saturdays, March 1 and 8, at the I.U. Maurer School of Law. Completion of CJAM's Basic Mediation Training or its approved equivalent is a prerequisite. Participants who complete Restorative Justice Practitioner Training are eligible to work in CJAM's Victim and Offender Restoration Program (VORP) and Shoplifting and Theft Education Program (STEP). However, all mediators who are interested in learning about restorative justice and its practice are welcome to participate. The training will be led by senior Restorative Justice Practitioners. The fee for the RJP training is $100, but will be waived for those who have committed themselves to volunteer as RJPs for CJAM for the current academic year and for those who have demonstrated their commitment to CJAM by previous volunteering.

Professor Ken Dau-Schmidt gave a presentation entitled "The Relative Bargaining Power of Employers and Unions in the Global Information Age: A Comparative Analysis of the United States and Japan," at a symposium on enterprise law hosted by Tokyo Institute of Technology and Hitotsubashi University on January 10,
On January 24, 2014, Professor Mark Janis spoke at the Vanderbilt Law School's JET Law Symposium, "'Patents 101: Eligibility from Computer Code to Genetic Codes." Janis's talk was titled "Limits on Patentability."
The Center for Intellectual Property Research has filed an amici curiae brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the petitioners in Kimble v. Marvel Enterprises, Inc. Professor Mark Janis, the counsel of record, is joined on the brief by a number of leading academics, including Eric E. Bensen, Vincent Chiappetta, Thomas F. Cotter, Rochelle Dreyfuss, Jason Du Mont, Marshall Leaffer, Michael Mattioli, Roger M. Milgrim, Raymond T. Nimmer, and Harold See. Indiana Law Annotated is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Submit information and articles for ILA to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. Entries may be edited to ensure consistent presentation. If you're requesting a room, submit all information (including the room request) via the Plan a Meeting feature of the website.
