Indiana Law welcomes seven new faculty for fall 2023
In one of its most productive hiring seasons in history, the Indiana University Maurer School of Law will have seven new faculty members beginning in fall 2023.
Valena Beety, Yvette Butler, Cindy Cho, Gabrielle Goodwin, Andrew Hammond, Jenn Oliva, and Cindy Williams comprise an impressive incoming class of highly regarded scholars and teachers.
“This incoming cohort is one of the most impressive we’ve ever brought to Bloomington and a clear sign that this Law School is committed to finding solutions to the most pressing challenges facing society,” said Indiana Law Dean Christiana Ochoa.

Fischman serves as witness in Endangered Species Act hearing
Professor Rob Fischman participated in one of three panels convened by the U.S. House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Water, Wildlife, and Fisheries on April 18 as lawmakers consider four Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolutions challenging the implementation of certain aspects of the ESA. Lowell Baier '64 also attended the hearing.

Teaching Awards presented
Great instructors are at the heart of any great school, and the Indiana University Maurer School of Law was proud to recognize five of its best at the school’s annual Teaching Awards March 24. Professor Jeff Stake was honored with the Leon H. Wallace Teaching Award, the highest teaching recognition a faculty member can be awarded. Professors Amy Applegate, Jayanth Krishnan, and Leandra Lederman were each awarded Trustees’ Teaching Awards, and Alan Becker, partner at Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, received the Adjunct Faculty Teaching Award.

Rojas reflects on completing law school in a pandemic
Alexa Rojas and 176 of her peers earned JDs from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, ready to begin the next chapter of their lives. For the Class of 2023, the Law School's graduation ceremony ended an experience unlike any other—they are the class that began their legal education during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. For Rojas, that meant not even having the opportunity to visit Bloomington before first-year orientation started.

Rusk named an American Constitution Society Next Generation Leader
The American Constitution Society has selected nearly two-dozen young legal professionals—including a second-year Indiana University Maurer School of Law student—for its prestigious 2023 Next Generation Leaders Program.
Laura J. Rusk, an Evansville, Ind. native, is one of 23 law students from across the country selected for their exceptional leadership in work with their respective ACS chapters. The program offers various opportunities that empower the students to further develop their leadership skills and make a long-lasting impact on their communities.

- Prof. John Applegate served as an expert panelist for the Government Accountability Office on the prospects for fusion energy last September. The GAO report was released on March 30.
- Prof. David Gamage co-authored an amicus brief to the Maryland Supreme Court on a digital advertising tax. Gamage also published "Why States Should Conform to the New Corporate AMT" to SSRN.
- Prof. Aneil Kovvali's "The Corporate Governance of Public Utilities" was published on the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance
- Prof. Leandra Lederman presented "The Rise and Fall(?) of Luxembourg as a Tax Ruling Haven" at Duke Law School's Tax Policy Seminar on March 30

- Adjunct instructor Robert Meitus '00 was named one of Billboard's Top Music Lawyers for 2023
- The Jerome Hall Law Library's John Moreland was a panelist at Yale Law Library's Legal Information Symposium
- Prof. Donna Nagy delivered the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law's 2023 Snyder Lecture today. She presented "Embracing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Disclosure: What the U.S. Can Learn from the U.K. and the EU."
- Prof. India Thusi presented and discussed her project "The Theoretical Underpinnings of Abolition" at the Drexel University Thomas R. Kline School of Law
- Prof. Joe Tomain moderated a panel following the Indianapolis screening of Ithaca, a documentary on the father of Julian Assange
