Biography
Professor Alvin Velazquez writes and teaches at the intersection of labor, bankruptcy law, and corporate law. His scholarship focuses on how organized labor adapts to the changing nature of the economy and the workplace.
His scholarship focuses on how organized labor adapts to the changing nature of the economy, the workplace. Specifically, his research provides insights into the roles that labor unions can have in the governance of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, bankruptcy practice, corporate governance, and the agencies that regulate them. He has had work published (or forthcoming) in peer-reviewed, faculty-edited, and student-edited journals including: the American Bankruptcy Law Journal, the ABA Journal of Labor and Employment Law, Chicago-Kent Law Review, and the Saint Louis Law Journal. He also written blog posts for the Yale Law and Political Economy Project Blog and the Power at Work blog. Professor Velazquez is also a co-editor in chief of the forthcoming Bloomberg Treatise on The Law of Technology, Algorithmic Tools, and Data Privacy in Employment. Professor Velazquez has served as a peer-reviewer for the Roosevelt Institute. He has provided commentary on many of these topics for both English and Spanish language media.
Prior to arriving at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, Professor Velazquez was an Associate General Counsel at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) where his practice focused on corporate governance, public sector bankruptcy, and emerging technologies. During his career at SEIU, Alvin served as chair of the Unsecured Creditors Committee for the Puerto Rico bankruptcy. He also testified before Congress, provided numerous Congressional briefings, and has had extensive experience advocating before various administrative agencies. He co-led SEIU’s summer law clerk program and worked closely with students who are interested in pursuing careers in labor and public interest law. Prior to SEIU, Professor Velazquez worked as an associate at several large law firms as a business litigator. Professor Velazquez previously taught classes at the Georgetown University Law Center as an adjunct professor and received an appointment as a fellow in the ABA’s Program for Prospective Administrative Law Scholars.
