Our anticipated commencement activities on Saturday, May 9, 2020, have been canceled because of a university-wide decision related to the COVID–19 pandemic. The Law School party originally scheduled for Friday, May 8 has also been canceled.
We are hoping to reschedule our on-campus, in-person festivities for December 19, 2020. This is currently the date set for IU's winter commencement. Our hope is to give those students who are able to attend the opportunity to walk across the stage and graduate in full regalia. Because future public health requirements are unpredictable, and because the university is still making decisions regarding graduation, our plans must remain tentative. We will keep you updated as they develop.
We received a great deal of input from individual students and via a questionnaire created and distributed by the Student Bar Association. It was apparent to us that for a clear majority of the 3L class, neither going fully virtual nor joining the ceremony of the Class of 2021 were popular options.
On May 9—the day graduates should have been walking across the stage to the thunderous applause of family and friends—we will mark the occasion with a brief online video containing special messages to our graduates and announcing various recognitions and awards. Look for social media celebrations to follow throughout the month of May.
Information about graduation regalia
Most graduating students ordered and paid for their graduation regalia before the pandemic began. Some students will still wish to receive their regalia for photographs and/or for a postponed ceremony. Other students will prefer to cancel the order for a refund. Please communicate directly with the company managing graduation regalia, Herff Jones. Your options are:
- Cancel your order and request a refund. Call customer service at 1-800-837-4235.
- Ask the company to ship the regalia directly to you now, so you can have your regalia for photographs and receive your cap and tassel sooner. Herff Jones will ship regalia to the address you give them. You will need to return the hood and gown (there will be a pre-paid return envelope), but you can keep the cap and tassel. Check a prior email from Herff Jones with a link to provide your shipping info. You may keep your hood and gown until the December ceremony and ship it back to the company afterwards. Shipping will be free both ways.
- Postpone your order until closer to December. Call customer service at 1-800-837-4235.
Certificates, honors cords, and other graduation-related items
The Office of Student Affairs will assemble graduate packages from the Law School for each student containing a composite picture of the class, any Latin honor cords, and any certificates or recognitions you may be receiving. We will distribute these packages in person at the Law School as soon as we are able, and will arrange to mail these packages to those who have no other way of getting them.
Diplomas
Information on receiving your diploma can be found here.
Please update your "Student Home" address to whichever address you would like your diploma mailed to. Your diploma will be mailed 10-12 weeks after your graduation and will take an additional 6-8 weeks for shipping. If you are not in the United States, you can pay for FedEx international priority shipping to receive your diploma sooner by using the FedEx request form at the page listed above. The university recommends using FedEx International Priority for deliveries to China.
