Center receives funding for Global Immigration Symposium
The Institute of Advanced Study awarded the Center with a generous grant to host an important global seminar on the intersection of migration, justice, and the rights of immigrants. The event will take place in the early spring semester 2023 and will bring together interdisciplinary researchers from different institutions around the globe and academic backgrounds. Professor Sara Friedman (IU Anthropology and Gender Studies) and Professor Irit Dekel (IU Germanic Studies & Jewish Studies) will be co-organizing the symposium with our Center leadership.
More immigration work: New Stewart Center study and ABA recognition
The Center has released a new study on the functioning of the immigration courts within the Department of Justice. Specifically, the focus is on the extent to which the trial level immigration courts deserve deference by the Board of Immigration Appeals when ruling on discretionary relief petitions (e.g., asylum claims) brought by immigrants. The study is being published in the Georgetown Immigration Law Journal.
And the Stewart Center was recently honored by the American Bar Association through its appointment of Jayanth Krishnan to the Advisory Committee of the ABA’s Presidential Commission on Immigration. He joins a group of widely respected academics, practitioners, former judges, and policymakers who are part of both the Committee and Commission itself.
Stewart Center professor's lecture for Taiwanese audience
Professor Shana Wallace delivered two important remote lectures to groups of academics, law students, and policymakers based in Taiwan. Her first talk was on U.S. antitrust law to an audience at National Chengchi University (NCU), and her second speech was on antitrust merger notification, which was co-hosted by the Taiwan Competition Law Institute and NCU. Professor Wallace’s engagement continues a long-standing relationship the Center has had with Taiwan, where, additionally, we have had strong ties with colleagues from National Taiwan University. Congratulations to Professor Wallace.
Stewart Center faculty at Global Law and Society-Lisbon
Four Stewart Center Faculty (Professors Ken Dau-Schmidt, Christiana Ochoa, Shruti Rana, and Jayanth Krishnan) were each involved in speaking at the annual Law & Society Conference that was held in Lisbon, Portugal in July 2022. The conference was the largest held in the Association’s history, with approximately 4,500 registrants who participated at the meeting held at ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.
India 75th anniversary events
In August 2022, India celebrated its 75th independence anniversary from Britain. The Stewart Center’s Prof. Jayanth Krishnan was in India and involved in several events to commemorate the momentous occasion, including participating in reflective seminars on the state of the rule of law in the country, delivering a series of lectures on global legal education, attending the 11th Jindal University Convocation, and meeting with Indian Supreme Court Justice D.Y. Chandrachud who will be assuming the position of Chief Justice of India in November 2022.
Stewart Center participates in Jindal-Harvard Summer Workshop
Consolidating our long-standing partnership with O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU), the Stewart Center was involved in the programming of JGU’s India summer workshop (July 2022) that is annually based and hosted by colleagues from Harvard University. Professor Jayanth Krishnan spoke at the event, and this year’s featured guest was the distinguished Member of India’s Parliament, the Honorable Dr. Shashi Tharoor; an accomplished group of scholars, NGO leaders, former ambassadors, and other and dignitaries were in attendance.
