Thursday
CACR Speaker Series: Mailyn Fidler, "Cybersecurity Mission Creep"
Noon - 1 p.m. in the Faculty Conference Room and on Zoom
Cybersecurity is experiencing mission creep. Policymakers are increasingly casting diverse policy issues as cybersecurity threats. When issues ranging from misinformation, child social media safety, antitrust law, journalist conduct, to sex trafficking are “cybersecuritized,” they are transformed from complex social challenges into urgent, technologically-inflected security threats. Reduced to threat logic, cybersecurity issues become argumentative “trump” cards that can erode consideration of all relevant interests and impoverish governance outcomes. This shift has four key consequences: it encourages oversimplified solutions, empowers technocratic specialists, increases opacity in governance, and ultimately undermines democratic deliberation. Cybersecurity is important–but should not be used merely to gain access to the politics of urgency.
Mailyn Fidler is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Harvard Law School. Fidler’s scholarship lies at the intersection of power and technology, critiquing the unaccountable ways that technology expands the power of government actors. Doctrinally, this scholarship engages with cybersecurity law, criminal law, and constitutional law. Her work has been featured in or by Lawfare, the Department of Justice, the multilateral Pall Mall Process on Cyber Intrusion Capabilities, and elsewhere.

The Psychology of Financial Decision Making

Wondered where that last $20 went? Assumed debt that wasn’t necessary? Wished you could control your spending? Made an impulse purchase you later regretted?
The money decisions we make are informed by many inputs, including our background, experiences, and environment. This interactive session will unpack these inputs along with the basics of brain development and biases that impact nearly every money decision we make.
Do you want to make more strategic money decisions? Join this session to LEARN how and EARN an entry into the 2025-26 MAX Scholarship Drawings.

October is cybersecurity month
Each week, the Cybersecurity and Privacy Law Association will share tips and tricks to help keep you and your data secure.
First, always use a unique password. With the number of data breaches increasing every year, it's not a question of if your login credentials will get leaked, it's when.
The solution to keeping track of all your unique passwords is to use a password manager. You only need to remember one pass phrase, and the password manager remembers all of your unique and secure passwords for you. An open source solution you might like is BitWarden. There are plenty of password managers on the market, BitWarden is just one of them. But do yourself favor and just use one.
