IP panel discussion: "Representing Students in NIL Deals: Name, Image, Likeness"

When the NCAA adopted its new Name, Image, Likeness policy in the summer of 2021, it opened the door for student-athletes to earn compensation for product endorsement, advertisements, appearances, and more. Through a unique new partnership—believed to be one of the first in the country—Indiana Law students will have the opportunity to work with student-athletes on the Bloomington campus beginning this fall. Under the direction of practitioners and faculty, law students can help advise IU student-athletes as they navigate the emerging field of NIL revenue.
Panelists Prof. Norm Hedges, Abe Shanehsaz '14, of Faegre Drinker, and Rebecca Pany, senior associate athletic director for sport administration and external partnerships for IU Athletics, will discuss this new initiative and how NIL is affecting collegiate athletics.

The Health Law Society invites you to hear alumna Mary Christie '19, who works at MaineHealth as its in-house counsel for its supply chain department. While at Indiana Law, Mary was a JD fellow in the Center for Constitutional Democracy and a Stewart Fellow, working at the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative in Delhi, India. Prior to attending law school, Mary received a graduate degree in Global Health and Public Policy from University of Edinburgh (UK) and worked for health care organizations in Indianapolis and Minneapolis.

Constitution Day

Join professors Luis Fuentes-Rowher, David Gamage, and Jody Madeira for a lively discussion of the Constitution's impact on law and policy. Panelists will discuss recent and upcoming blockbuster Supreme Court decisions on topics including abortion rights, affirmative action, gun control, and voting rights. Attendees can expect to hear how the Constitution does—or does not—limit Congress’s ability to address income inequality through a wealth tax and more generally how constitutional considerations affect policy making.
Dean candidate #1 Town Hall

The search committee for the Dean of the Maurer School of Law has organized three Town Hall-style events with candidates today, tomorrow, and Monday, September 19, with the first candidate on campus today. To protect the privacy of candidates, their names, CVs, and letters of interest will become available 24 hours in advance of each event. Check your university email to access that information. These events are open to Law School faculty, staff, students, and supporters, and will provide opportunities for you to ask questions of each candidate. Each presentation will also be made available via Zoom. Links to each session will be made available 24 hours prior.

ELS: Toxic tort appellate argument

Join the Environmental Law Society to hear a rehearsal of an appellate argument of a toxic tort case. David McCrea '68 is an attorney in Bloomington who has litigated toxic tort cases since 1984. He has been involved in five appeals and is currently litigating a case to remediate a manufacturer's use of arsenic in a residential deck in Bloomington.
Latina firsts: Dean Ochoa documentary screening

Under LLSA's theme for the month, "Building Bridges: Latina Firsts," we will be highlighting Latinas who have opened the door to new opportunities for all Latinx people. What better way to begin than by celebrating the work of the first decanal Latina at the Maurer School of Law!
Join us for a viewing of Interim Dean Christiana Ochoa's 2014 documentary, Otra cosa no hay (There is Nothing Else). The film explores the roles that law, politics, and protest play in communities when gold attracts the attention of foreign mining companies, and, immediately after, becomes a cause célèbre of environmental activists aiming to protect its water from mining-related contamination. The screening will be followed by a Q & A with Dean Ochoa.

Plan for 2022 composite photos
The time for composite photos is approaching. Students who will graduate in the 2022 calendar year and wish to be included in the graduation composite (those large portrait grids hanging on the hallway walls on the second floor) should sign up for a photo session.
The dress code is business professional.
Dates are October 24, 25, and 26 from 10-4:30 in Baier Hall 340.
Students who miss these sessions must make other arrangements at their own expense with the photographer if they wish to be included.
