This week in the Law School
ILA is signing off until its next issue, on January 17. The ILA editor wishes everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving; good luck taking, administering, and grading exams; and a cheerful holiday and New Year's season. Until we're #Back2Baier January 4 for Wintersession — take care. Until then:
- Opportunities to share stuff and skills with people in our community: Monday and in Announcements.
- Exam software drop-in help sessions: Monday, Tuesday. See Announcements for next week.
Monday
Coats for Cocoa
10 a.m. - 1 p.m. on the patio
The Mass Incarceration Committee for Indiana Law's chapter of the National Lawyers Guild is hosting Coats for Cocoa! We will be on the back patio of Baier Hall collecting new and used coats and other winter gear for the local nonprofit, New Leaf New Life. New Leaf will distribute this gear to people leaving the local jail without proper winter attire. For your generous donation, you will get a cup of hot cocoa! BYOM (bring your own mug) if you can. Open to all!
Learn about careers in cyber and privacy
Noon - 1 p.m. on Zoom
The Cybersecurity and Privacy Law Association will host alumni Stephen Reynolds, '08, and Gary Hunt, '18, of Baker McKenzie, and Zachary Heck, '14, of Taft Stettinius & Hollister, to discuss opportunities to learn about and pursue careers in cyber and privacy. These fields are growing very quickly so there is a great need for competent legal professionals who understand the issues arising within them.

VITA volunteer training begins Jan. 31
The Law School will host a site for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program this spring, coordinated by United Way. VITA helps low-income Bloomington residents file their state and federal taxes for free, and we are seeking volunteers! United Way will provide all relevant training and no tax experience is necessary to become IRS-certified. The site will operate on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6 - 9 p.m., beginning January 31st. Volunteering presents a wonderful opportunity to get experience working directly with clients, to expand your tax skills, and to log pro bono hours!
Volunteers can sign up now. Feel free to reach out to the United Way VITA contact with any questions: amy@monroeunitedway.org.
Basic mediation and restorative justice training (40 hours) on Zoom: winter 2022 dates
Training February 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 24, 26, and March 3 and 5.
The Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) offers a 40-hour training program for those interested in learning about conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative justice. Participants will enhance their interpersonal skills in communication and listening, problem solving, and negotiation; and they will increase their understanding of restorative justice philosophy and methods, sources of conflict, and processes leading to constructive conflict resolution. The training should benefit anyone concerned with managing conflict and its resolution. The training also provides the background and skills necessary to work as a community mediator and restorative justice practitioner and qualifies participants to volunteer in CJAM’s programs. The training will be led by senior mediators and restorative justice practitioners.
This winter, the training will take place on Zoom Thursday evenings, 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., over five weeks beginning February 3 and continuing through March 5. Tuition is $300 ($260 if received by December 31, 2021 and $275 if received by January 17, 2022).
Learn more about the training and register. You may also apply for a scholarship. For questions or more information, email training@cjamcenter.org.
