Prof. Hughes to moderate presentation at ABA spring section meeting.

Prof. Sarah Jane Hughes, co-chair of the Cyberspace Law Committee’s Subcommittee on E-Payments and Financial Services, will moderate a discussion of crypto payments and fintech issues featuring J. Dax Hansen, partner, Perkins Coie, Seattle, and Youssef Sneifer, strategist and advisory counsel, Perkins Coie, Seattle. Hansen leads the firm’s Fintech and Blockchain Industry Group. Sneifer joined Perkins after serving as President of Microsoft Payments, Inc. and in Microsoft’s general counsel’s office. Tom Kierner, '15, is vice-chair of the subcommittee.

IU Vice President for International Affairs and Professor Hannah L. Buxbaum will deliver the Irving Tragen Lecture on Comparative Law at UC Berkeley Law School. How to have a successful summer.

Join CSO on Zoom for tips on success during your summer job. We will discuss professionalism and employer expectations, including what to wear and how to produce quality work product. We will also offer tips for maximizing your success while working remotely. This session is open to all and is required for students who will be doing an externship for credit, and it is highly encouraged for all 1Ls. The session will be recorded for those unable to attend. The IU Maurer School of Law Black Law Students Association will host the 33rd Annual—and first-ever virtual—Rapheal M. Prevot, Jr. Barristers’ Ball. Throughout the evening, we’ll honor outstanding faculty and alumni and reveal class superlatives, including the 2021 Mr. and Ms. Maurer recipients, as voted by students. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to compete in awards-themed trivia, with prize(s) awarded to the winner. So wear your finest home attire and join your students and colleagues in Zoomington for a festive evening not only celebrating the end of a unique academic year, but also raising a glass to the graduating class.

Virtual Open Conversations: Racism and racial injustice.
April 30, noon - 1 pm. You're invited to the Indiana State Bar Association's virtual April Open Conversations. In honor of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, which is celebrated every May, the April 30 Open Conversation will feature three Asian-Americans with diverse backgrounds and experiences: Judge Jacqueline Nguyen, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit; Mike Witte, retired Executive Director of the Indiana Supreme Court’s Disciplinary Commission. and Sujata B. Chugh, attorney at Mendrygal Law, Indianapolis.
Hosts Justice Steven David and Angka Hinshaw will again remain on the webinar from 1-1:30 pm for participants to react, ask questions, and further engage in candid discussion.
Reviving OUTlaw in 2021-22.
If you are interested in helping reconstitute the LGBTQ+ affinity group for the 2021-22 school year, please contact Celia Meredith (cmmeredi@iu.edu). We are currently seeking 4-5 interested students to re-register OUTlaw as a student organization to create more spaces for LGBTQIA+ social and support events.

Education Law and Policy Institute.
The IU School of Education is hosting the 2021 Martha McCarthy Education Law and Policy Institute on May 14. This year, the McCarty Institute will be a virtual event, and registration will be free. The conference brings together educational leaders, attorneys, policymakers, and professors to participate in panel discussions addressing hot topics and cases in education law and to discuss a range of education law and policy topics in small groups. Faculty and Staff News
This semester, Prof. Jeannine Bell has published one scholarly article on the current state of policing and hate crime, “Lack of Punishment Doesn’t Fit the Crime,” and an op-ed, “What Is a Hate Crime? The Narrow Legal Definition Makes It Hard to Charge and Convict.” Her five talks this semester have ranged from one on implicit bias to the Monroe County Bench Bar Association in February to an address on Policing and Protest at the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation in Jackson, Miss. in March. Just this past week, she was quoted in the New York Times and featured on Harvard Law professor Noah Feldman’s podcast, Deep Background. She has also spoken numerous times with national and international media. Those media appearances aren't listed in ILA, but can be easily accessed in the In the Media section of the Law School's website.
Prof. Leandra Lederman recently participated in the Critical Tax Conference hosted on Zoom by UC Irvine. On April 8, she moderated a panel. On April 9, she presented her draft article titled "Of Risks and Remedies: Best Practices in Tax Rulings Transparency."
