Join VITA, the Volunteer Tax Assistance Project, for the launch of our 2020 tax season volunteer efforts. This meeting is mandatory for all VITA Tax Hero volunteers. Come learn about the requirements of the VITA tax assistance schedule for tax season, along with study skills for the VITA tax preparer accreditation exams. Room 121, 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Tax Curriculum and Career Prep Information Session
The Tax Law Society and the Business and Law Society are co-sponsoring an information session on tax courses, tax extra-curriculars, and which ones you should consider for careers in different areas of the law. Come meet tax faculty and student leaders and learn more about the tax curriculum in time for drop/add. Lunch. Room 120, noon.

Workshop for 1Ls: Judicial Summer Externships
If you are interested in a position in judicial chambers over the summer, this is the workshop for you! Judges are starting to take applicants in January, and Prof. Inge Van der Cruysse is here to help you to get ready for that process, whether you have worked on your application over winter break or not. We will walk through the details of the application. Room 122, noon.

What Now? Learning from the First Semester Experience
Join Director Beck for a brief session during which you will evaluate your first semester experience and identify strategic adjustments you might to maximize your success during the second semester. All first-year students must attend this session once, which will be offered six times during the first two weeks of the spring semester. Space is limited at each session. Please reserve your spot on CareerNet. This week's sessions are today from 3:00-3:45 p.m. in room 124 and Friday from 1:15-2:00 p.m. in room 213.

Stewart Fellows Overseas Externship Applications Due Friday, January 17!
The Stewart Fellows Overseas Externship Program is accepting applications from 1Ls and 2Ls for placements for summer 2020 through Friday, January 17. Externships range from six weeks to full summer in law firms, NGOs, government offices, and an investment management firm. The countries of placement include Argentina, Cambodia, China, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, Poland, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. Fellows receive a stipend that covers all internship-related expenses, including round-trip airfare, accommodations, visa (if needed), and per diem. Interested students should contact Ms. Lara Gose (lgose@indiana.edu; Baier Hall, Room 254) for more information. Application requires résumé, cover letter, and name and contact information for one law school reference to be submitted through CareerNet. Review of applications begins immediately after deadline with interviews following as soon as possible.
Plan ahead: Basic Mediation and Restorative Justice Training
The Community Justice and Mediation Center (CJAM) offers a 40-hour training program for community members interested in learning about conflict resolution, mediation, and restorative justice. Participants will enhance their interpersonal skills in communication and listening, problem solving, and negotiation, and they will increase their understanding of restorative justice philosophy and methods, sources of conflict, and processes leading to constructive conflict resolution. The training should benefit any community member concerned with managing conflict and its resolution. The training provides the background and skills necessary to work as a community mediator and restorative justice practitioner and qualifies participants to volunteer in CJAM’s programs.
The winter training will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. over five weekend days, February 15, 16, 22, 23, and 29 at the Law School. The training will be led by senior mediators and restorative justice practitioners. Tuition is $300 ($275 if received by January 26). Scholarships are available. Media Law Paper Competition and Symposium
The Media School is holding a symposium on Friday, March 6, 2020 titled, “Media Law and Policy in the Digital Age: Global Challenges and Opportunities.” There is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to submit a paper for the chance to win a monetary award, as well as earn a nice recognition that you can put on your résumé. Faculty and Staff News
Welcome, Kate Zearing, Director of Development, Major Gifts
Kate comes to the Law School from the IU Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, where she has worked in the development office since 2015, most recently as director of development, major gifts. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Hofstra University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and of the IU O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, where she earned a master of public affairs in nonprofit management and policy analysis. Her office is in room 202 of Baier Hall.
Kate joins Susan Yoon as a major gifts officer. She replaces Maarten Bout, who left last August to become director of development, international advancement, for the Office of the Vice President for International Affairs.
Libby Steinbach Promoted to Executive Assistant
Most of you know Libby from her outstanding work as the Law School's room scheduler, along with her duties as administrative secretary to the executive associate dean. Libby is taking over from Katy Hunt, who is moving to Minneapolis with her husband, who has taken a job here. A search is under way for Libby's successor. Congratulations, Libby, and best wishes, Katy!
