This Week in the Law School
Please welcome our Alumni Board members this week as they participate in their annual fall meeting. And we extend congratulations to this year's Distinguished Service Award recipients, who will be honored Friday. Honorees are Jane Henegar, '88; Thomas Y. Man, '97, Jeanne Picht, '84; Stephen Reynolds, '08; and Tim Riffle, '83. Please welcome our distinguished guests if you see them in the halls. Be on the lookout for new banners on the lightposts outside Baier Hall this week -- they pay homage to some of the Law School's illustrious alumni from our 175-year history.

Outreach for Legal Literacy Office Hours
Have questions about teaching? Need advice about lesson plans? Come to OLL "Office Hours" on Monday to talk with an executive board member about teaching, OLL, lesson plans, classroom management, and classroom etiquette. Executive board members will also be available to look over any additional materials you may want to add to your teaching. Can't make it but still have questions? Email ollexecboard@gmail.com. Bar Support Program: Themis Writing Workshop
Essay writing skills are key to success in law school and on the bar exam. As part of the Maurer Bar Support Program, Themis will be holding an essay writing workshop series on October 22-24. This workshop series is open to all 2Ls, 3Ls, and graduate students. Student must have registered in advance. As an incentive to attend and participate in all of the bar support sessions this year, we are giving away a free iPad and Indiana Law messenger bags in the spring. In order to qualify, you must attend all three writing sessions in the fall, the MBE practice exam, and the MBE follow-up workshop in the spring. Room 121, noon.

Class of 2019 Composite Photos
All JD students and all graduate students (LLM, MCL, SJD, PhD) graduating in the 2019 calendar year are invited to take a photo for inclusion in the Law School's annual composite photo. You will be receiving an email with the link to set up a photo session appointment. October 23-25 are the only three days set for photo sessions. If you are abroad during the fall semester, there will be another date set for you in the spring. If you have any questions, please email lawosa@indiana.edu. Room 340, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Women's Law Caucus Meeting
We will be dividing into committees and talking about upcoming networking and canvassing events. Lunch will be provided. Room 120, noon.
Arts and Crafts at the CSO
Join Career Services for some creative time! We encourage and support fiber arts (knitting, crochet, needlework, spinning, etc.) and other portable crafts, and will have supplies on hand for coloring. We'll meet every week until exams begin; you’re also welcome to come by any time for a break from your busy schedule. Faculty and staff are welcome as well. CSO, noon to 1 p.m.
IFLP Summer Internships and 3L Field Placements
The CSO and Prof. Bill Henderson will offer an informational session on training and employment opportunities through the Institute for the Future of Law Practice(IFLP, called “I-flip”). IFLP is a nonprofit organization that combines advanced training in modern law practice with paid employment with sophisticated legal employers. Indiana Law is one of IFLP’s founding law school members. Students accepted into the 2019 program will attend a 3-week bootcamp in May (starting after finals) followed by paid summer internships for rising 2Ls and paid field placements (onsite, for credit) for rising 3Ls. IFLP course work emphasizes the growing integration of law with data, process, technology, design thinking, and new business models. IFLP employers include a mix of legal departments, law firms, public service employers, NewLaw, and legaltech companies. IFLP training is approved for academic credit as Modern Law Practice I, Modern Law Practice II, and Modern Law Practice Field Placement. 2018 participants will share their experiences at this session, and all interested 1Ls and 2Ls are encouraged to attend. Spotting Fake News
Please join us for the fourth Jerome Hall Law Library workshop of the fall semester. This workshop will cover how to spot inaccurate information online and how to check the veracity of suspected fake news. Please register in advance. Light refreshments will be served. Room 206E, noon.

PAD: What Should I Be Doing Now?
Phi Alpha Delta is hosting the first of two academic sessions of the semester in which 2Ls and 3Ls talk to 1Ls about what they should be doing now to prepare for finals, their job searches, and anything else coming down the pike. There will be lots of time for questions, and lunch will be provided. Open to PAD members only. Room 122, noon.
PDEV Series: Job/Internship Search Strategies and Resources
Looking for a job or internship for OPT? It's not too early to start your search. In this presentation open to graduate and exchange students, learn more about the legal marketplace and resources available to you, including the electronic resources available through the Jerome Hall Law Library. Presentation by Kimberly Mattioli, assistant librarian for student services and adjunct lecturer in law. Room 213, noon.
Flu Shots
The IU Health Center flu shot clinic will set up shop in Baier Hall. Faculty, staff, and retirees (under age 65) covered by an IU-sponsored medical plan can receive the shot at no cost if a valid insurance card is presented. IU students who have paid their health fee are assessed a $26 fee. Save yourself time by completing this form in advance and bringing it with you. Student Lounge, 2 to 4 p.m.
ChIPs Coffee Break
Join the Law School's ChIPs chapter for its monthly coffee break. This month's guest will be Christina Martini, partner at McDermott Will & Emery. Coffee and treats provided by the Center for IP Research. Room 216, 2 to 3 p.m.
OWLS Trick-or-Treating
Members of the Indiana Law community (students, staff, faculty, administration) are invited to escort their children (or other young guests) for trick-or-treating throughout Baier Hall. Various offices throughout the building will welcome trick-or-treaters. Come in costume (of course!) and celebrate with the Older and Wiser Law Students. Baier Hall, 4 to 5 p.m.

Alumni Board Networking Event and Cocktail Hour
Join members of the Maurer School of Law Alumni Board for a student and alumni networking session. From 3:30 to 4 p.m., you will present your elevator pitch and then have a few minutes to talk with a board member to get feedback and ask questions. We will rotate every few minutes. And then from 4 to 5 p.m., you can continue to practice your networking skills at a board cocktail reception. Space is limited. Business attire. Meet in the third floor lobby at 3:15 p.m. At 3:30 p.m. you will be escorted into the faculty conference room. The reception will be held in the faculty lounge.

PILF Cornhole Tournament
Join the Public Interest Law Foundation for a cornhole tournament. To prepare, we will be tabling this week in the main lobby over the lunch hour. Teams consist of two players, and the cost is $12 per team when you sign up during one of our tabling times. We will also be signing up teams and collecting money at the event, but the price of participating will increase to $14 per team. We will be grilling on site, and there will be a prize for the winning team as well as a prize for the team with the most creative team name (corn puns are encouraged). Bryan Park, 4 to 7 p.m.
SBA Halloween Party
Come if you dare to the Student Bar Association's fear-tastic costume contest and Halloween party at the Bluebird at 9 p.m. Presale tickets are $5; tickets at the door are $10. We accept all forms of payment. SBA will be selling tickets this week over the lunch hour.
CSO Job of the Week
The Department of the Treasury's Office of the General Counsel offers a volunteer summer internship program for law students at the Treasury headquarters in Washington, DC. These internships offer an opportunity to improve research and writing skills, to observe the practice of law in a major cabinet agency, and to learn about substantive areas of the law by dealing with issues faced by Treasury lawyers and their clients. Announcements
If/When/How and Advocates for Life are holding a Diaper Drive for Middle Way House October 22-31 during lunch. Middle Way House is in need of size 3, 4, and 5 diapers and pull-ups, along with sippy cups, bottles, and wipes. This is a great opportunity to support an organization within the community that does lots of good and is in need of these donations. Please consider helping us support women and life as we collect these items for Middle Way House.

On October 15, 2018, Prof. Leandra Lederman presented “Information Matters in Tax Enforcement” in the Tax Law Speaker Series at the University of San Diego School of Law. This article is co-authored with Joe Dugan, '15.

Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event.
