This week in the Law School
This week we host our first endowed lecture of the year, the Ralph Fuchs Lecture. We're honored to welcome Prof. Robert S. Chang, who will deliver a timely talk on an old Supreme Court case that has current implications. These endowed lectures are vitally important to the school and we highly encourage you to attend. You get to hear from some of the world's leading authorities on a variety of subjects, as well as a free lunch.
A special welcome to our Black Law Student Alumni and Latino Alumni advisory boards who are here Saturday for meetings and a reception.

IP Practitioners-in-Residence
Jason Blair, trademark examiner for the US Patent & Trademark Office, will be on campus to talk about the development of non-traditional marks and other current issues facing the USPTO today. Mr. Blair will be joined by associates Lindsey Szymczak (Meitus Gelbert Rose LLP) and Caitlin Byczko (Barnes & Thornburg), who will offer an attorney’s perspective Lunch provided. Room 213, noon.
Jewish Law Students Association Call-out Meeting
We are revitalizing the Jewish Law Students Association this year. JLSA is a social network for Jewish students of all levels of observance and anyone interested in learning more about Judaism. We plan to hold events for the major holidays, starting with an event today on Rosh Hashanah and a break fast on Sept. 19. All are welcome to join. Room 122, noon.
PILF/LELS Call-out Meeting
Join the Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) and Labor and Employment Law Society (LELS) for a joint call-out meeting. We’ve joined forces because we know how busy you are. First, learn about how to become eligible to receive a summer scholarship, more about what PILF is, and ways to get involved in planning our annual event, Singing for Summer Salaries. Then learn about exciting speakers hosted by LELS, getting involved in the field, and networking opportunities in all areas of labor and employment law. 2L/3Ls: Getting Ready to Apply for Judicial Clerkships
Prof. Inge Van der Cruysse and Ms. Sarah Portwood will give you the nuts and bolts on why a judicial clerkship with a judge or court after law school is a great way to launch your career, and when and how to start your application process. We will also give you an overview of the assistance and resources the Judicial Clerkship Program offers applicants. IP Association Internal Mentoring Pairing Announcement
The IPA will have its internal mentor pairing event, where members will meet their mentors and mentees, and find out who will serve as 1L IPA reps for the year. We have sent a brief survey to both the 1Ls and 2L/3L members to gauge your interests and your desired legal markets to best pair you with your internal mentors and mentees. The Ralph Fuchs Lecture: Prof. Robert S. Chang
In a lecture titled “Fake News: Korematsu v. United States Overruled,” Prof. Robert S. Chang will examine the emptiness of the U.S. Supreme Court’s formal repudiation of Korematsu, which occurs simultaneously with the Court's reinstating what might be termed immigration exceptionalism and national security exceptionalism that lie at the heart of Korematsu and are given renewed life in Trump v. Hawaii. Moot Court Room, noon.
U.S. Air Force JAG Information Session
Interested in the Air Force JAG? A representative will talk with interested students about the program during this presentation, which will be held in Lewis Building Room 211. The Lewis Building is located across Indiana Avenue from the Law School. Use the Fourth Street entrance behind Qdoba. Noon.

Melissa Crouch from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, will be presenting on "Constitution-making in Divided Societies." Henderson House (618 E. Third Street), noon.
Graduate and Exchange Students: Checking School-Life Balance
Feeling stressed? Tired? Pulled in too many directions? Then it’s time to check your school-life integration, or balance. You might be spending too much time on one area of your life and ignoring other areas that are important to you. Join Prof. Carwina Weng, director of clinics, for this interactive workshop. Prof. Weng will lead you through exercises that will help you find ways to balance the many demands on your time and energy. With her guidance, you will check your priorities in all facets of your life, figure out the allocation of time you would prefer, and figure out ways to change the time you spend on school and other parts of your life. Taking steps to achieve this kind of balance can help you feel better and also work more effectively. Room 213, noon.
ILAP Mandatory Training on Letter Writing
The Inmate Legal Assistance Project will be holding a mandatory training on letter writing for all volunteers interested in taking on a letter assignment this semester. We will be discussing how to properly download and store materials for assignments, how to access the research bank on Clio, and how to begin researching. If you are unable to make this training but would still like to take on an assignment, please contact Maryrachel Durso as soon as possible. Room 124, 4 p.m.

Tenant Assistance Project Call-out Meeting
The Tenant Assistance Project (TAP) is a pro bono group that assists tenants who are facing the immediate threat of eviction in Monroe County. On Thursday and Friday mornings, TAP volunteers go to the Justice Center in Bloomington, counsel tenants facing evictions, negotiate with their landlords if necessary, and, on occasion, represent the tenants in the hearings themselves. If you are interested in joining TAP, or just want to eat lots of Baked! cookies, come to this event. Room 120, 3 p.m.

Dean Austen Parrish has written a short piece for Opinio Juris on the soon-to-be published Fourth Restatement’s treatment of the limits of personal jurisdiction under international law.
Prof. Bill Henderson authored "What Signal are Legal Employers Sending to Legal Education" for Legal Evolution.
Prof. Steve Sanders appeared on Bloomberg Radio to discuss the confirmation hearings of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Duke Law Prof. Christopher Schroeder will present "Supreme Court Nominations in a Polarized Senate" for Constitution Day next week. See next week's ILA for full details. Moot Court Room, noon.
Socctoberfest Sign-ups
This year's soccer tournament will take place on Friday, October 19 at 5:00 p.m. at Karst Farm Park in Bloomington. This event is open to men and women in any degree program at the Law School. All ability levels are welcome and encouraged to sign up. After the games, there will be a cookout for participants and spectators. Participants, fellow students, and family are all welcome to attend. If you are interested in playing, please e-mail Ms. Rhea May, and include your ability level based on the categories below, your shirt size (athletic fit: Small, Medium, Large, X-Large, 2XL), and if you would like to play goalie.I played competitively in college or high school

Ethics Training
If you missed the ethics training and intend to participate in pro bono work this year, please email the Access to Justice Pro Bono Fellows. You will not be able to participate in pro bono activities unless you have completed this training. If you have previously attended an ethics training, you are good to go for the year.
