Federalist Society Lecture: Does the First Amendment Protect Religious Freedom for Hobby Lobby?
Under the Affordable Care Act, businesses are required to offer insurance that covers contraceptives for their employees. Some business owners have objected, arguing that this mandate requires them to violate their sincerely held religious beliefs protected by the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom and Restoration Act. But are businesses actually protected by these provisions? To help discuss this issue, we will hear from Matt Bowman, who represents one of the businesses and recently filed a cert petition to the U.S. Supreme Court in Conestoga Wood Specialties v. Sebelius. Professor Dan Conkle will provide commentary. Free Jimmy Johns provided. Room 125, noon.

Join the Protective Order Project in Recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Domestic Violence Awareness Month began in October of 1987. Over the years, its activities have been as varied and diverse as the month's participants but have a common theme: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence.
Join POP in raising awareness every weekday during the month of October during the lunch hour in the lobby, by:
- Participating in our ribbon campaign: Grab a free purple ribbon to wear and demonstrate support
- Donate Clothing to Middle Way House: We will have a collection bin while tabling for any donated clothing to Middle Way House. All clothing is welcome, but there is a special push for much needed winter items.
- Purchase a Maurer hoodie (or two!): Come check out the hoodie during the lunch hour, or order on line. All profits will help fund the Protective Order Project, which provides legal assistance to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The online cart will close on Saturday, October 12, 2013, and we hope to deliver your hoodies to you shortly after fall break. If you have any hoodie-related questions, please contact Simone at simsprag@indiana.edu. For other questions, contact POP at POP@indiana.edu.
