Moot Court Semifinals and Finals This Week
The Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition is an annual competition open to all second-year students at Indiana Law. This year's is the largest such competition in the Law School's history. More than 160 Competitors wrote a brief and then argued individually in three fall rounds of oral arguments before panels of judges. The thirty-two students with the best combined scores for their briefs and oral arguments in the fall semester advanced to the spring rounds. Eight competitors have since advanced to the semifinal arguments, which will begin at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, February 26 in the Moot Court Room. Two champions will be named at the final arguments on Friday, March 1. Finals begin at 6:00 p.m. (note earlier start time) in the Moot Court Room and will be followed by a public reception in the first floor lobby at 8:00 p.m. The competition is sponsored by Bose McKinney & Evans LLP.

Minnesota Supreme Court Justice David Stras on Recent Supreme Court Cases
Join the Federalist Society as they host Hon. David Stras of the Minnesota Supreme Court. Justice Stras will speak on the topic, "Recent U.S. Supreme Court Cases That Every Law Student Should Know." This is sure to be an interesting presentation by Justice Stras. Lunch. Room 125, noon.
Indianapolis Bar Association Law Student Division Callout Meeting
Do you want to practice law in the Indianapolis area after graduation? Would you like to meet attorneys who practice in your area of interest? Get involved NOW with the Indianapolis Bar Association. The Maurer School of Law is looking for outstanding student leaders to re-activate the IndyBar Law Student Division. IP Theory Callout Meeting
IP Theory is seeking staff members for next year. Membership is open to both second- and third-year students, so current first- and second-year students interested in applying should attend the meeting. The meeting will cover how to apply for a position on next year's board of editors as well as upcoming publications and projects. Peter Tavlin earned his MBA at the IU Kelley School of Business in finance. He has significant experience in the corporate sector working in tandem with legal counsel. For the past 15 years he has worked at Bombardier Aerospace, where he currently serves as the Director or Aircraft Securitization. Peter will be in residence at the Law School to discuss his career and how students considering career opportunities in the business sector can use their law degree. Practice Skills Series: Criminal Defense

American Constitution Society Discussion of Arguments in Today's Voting Rights Act Case, Shelby County v. Holder
On the morning of February 27, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Shelby County v. Holder, challenging the constitutionality of §5 of the Voting Rights Act. Please join us for an interesting conversation on the constitutional arguments. Prof. Luis Fuentes-Rohwer will be present to lead the discussion. This conversation will be particularly interesting for those who want to attend the debate the following day (Feb. 28) on the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act. American Constitution Society and Federalist Society: A Debate on the Constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act § 5
Join us for a debate on the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act§ 5, one day after those arguments are made in front of the Supreme Court in Shelby County v. Holder. Prof. Luis Fuentes-Rohwer will defend the law. Hans A. von Spakovsky, Senior Legal Fellow and Manager of Civil Justice Reform Initiative at the Heritage Foundation, will challenge the law. Lunch. LGBT Executive Board Members to Speak at CLE in Indianapolis
Maurer students on the executive board for the LGBT project will be speaking in Indianapolis at a CLE on "Same-Sex Unions at the Crossroads: How the U.S. Supreme Court Cases and Other Legal and Political Developments May Change the Landscape for LGBT Families and Relationships in 2013." The cost is $15 for ISBA student members and non-attorneys. The event is Thursday, February 28 from 3:00 to 5:00, followed by a reception. For more information, click here.
Maurer Team Participates in Regional Transactional Law Meet
After defeating three other teams in Maurer's internal transactional law competition last fall, 3Ls Eli Stoughton and Kyle Doherty-Peters represented Maurer in the Regional Transactional Law Meet, the live round of which was held at University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law on February 15. Acting as counsel for a hypothetical pharmaceutical company involved in a $2.5 billion asset sale gone bad, Stoughton and Doherty-Peters reviewed client and industry information, interviewed their hypothetical client, drafted an amended stock purchase agreement, and negotiated live with teams of buyer's counsel from schools across the Midwest. Congratulations to both students for prevailing in our fall competition and for representing Maurer in a tough competition this semester.

You will receive confirmation that your room has been reserved after your request has been processed. When filling out your event description, please provide all information possible, especially if you are requesting that the event be publicized.

Indiana Law Annotated is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week (and, if requested, for the week after that). Submit information and articles for ILA to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. Entries may be edited to ensure consistent presentation. If you're requesting a room, submit all information (including the room request) via the Plan a Meeting feature of the website.
