Faculty News
On November 15, Prof. Leandra Lederman presented her paper titled "Measured Tax Enforcement" (co-authored with Ted Sichelman from the University of San Diego Law School) on a panel she organized at the National Tax Association's 105th Annual Conference on Taxation in Providence, RI. The panel was titled "New Insights Into Tax Compliance and Evasion." Joel Slemrod from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business was the discussant for her paper.
Professors Brown, Dau-Schmidt, Fuentes-Rowher, and Lovelace took part in the first-ever sojourn by American legal scholars to go to India for the primary purpose of meeting with leaders of India’s Dalit Community. Dalits (also referred to as "untouchables" or "outcastes") have been subjected to religiously based oppression for at least 1500 years.
The group met with and interacted with several of the leading Dalit scholars, political, business and media individuals, as well as other significant individuals in India, including a potential future Prime Minister of India. They delivered papers at a conference titled "Dalits and African Americans in 21st Century: Learning from Cross Cultural Experiences" held at the Tata Institute for Social Science Research in Mumbai, India on October 14 and 15. On Tuesday, October 16, they met with over 100 Dalit lawyers, activists, doctors and intellectuals at a Town Hall meeting in Mumbai organized by Dr Suresh Mane. Dr Mane is the National Secretary of the BSP, which is the national political party in India that represents the interest of Dalits.
On Thursday, October 18, they went to the Dalit manual scavenger rural village of Mohammdabad. There they interacted with over 400 people and discussed the need to advance the equality interests of Dalit women in a program sponsored by the Social Development Foundation. They all also delivered papers at a conference titled "Diversity, Discrimination and Social Exclusion in India and the USA" at the Jindal Global Law School in Haryana, India on October 22 and 23. On Wednesday, October 24, they participated in a roundtable discussion with Indian intellectuals who work on Dalit issues at the Indian Institute for Dalit Studies in New Delhi. On Thursday, October 25, they were the guests of honor at a dinner attended by 70 Dalit community members hosted by the Dalit Chamber of Commerce. On Friday, October 26, they had a private audience for over 75 minutes with Raoul Gandhi, the National Secretary of the Congress Party of India. Gandhi is the great grandson of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, the grandson of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the son of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and the son of current President of the Congress Party, Sonia Gandhi.

FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics) is now accepting applications for a fellowship that uses the conduct of lawyers and judges in Nazi Germany as a launching point for an intensive two-week early summer program about contemporary legal ethics. Fellowships include an all-expense paid trip from New York to Berlin, Krakow, and Oświęcim (Auschwitz) where students will work with leading faculty to explore both legal history and the ethical issues facing lawyers today. All program costs, including international and European travel, lodging, and food, are covered. The tentative program dates for FASPE Law are May 26 - June 6, 2013. Completed applications must be received by January 11, 2013. Candidates of all religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
