This Week in the Law School
The Federalist Society hosts a debate between Professor Mark Janis and Villanova's Michael Risch on the patenting of processes today at noon in room 124.
Professor C. Raj Kumar, of the Jindal Global Law School, is serving as the Law School's George P. Smith Visiting Professor. Professor Kumar will deliver the Smith Lecture at noon on Tuesday in the Moot Court Room. Please plan to attend this event, which will cover India's challenges in establishing a greater rule of law society.
Finally, ILA would like to extend a warm welcome to Judge David F. Hamilton, of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and his clerks to the Law School. We are honored to have Judge Hamilton and his staff working among us and look forward to the many exciting opportunities his presence here will provide.

International Jobs Workshop
Interested in international practice? Unsure what international practice involves, how to get an international law job, or what classes to take in preparation? Professor Christy Ochoa and Executive Associate Dean Hannah Buxbaum will lead a workshop on those issues from noon to 1 p.m. They will discuss both private international law practice (including at corporate firms) and public international law practice (including NGOs) and take any questions you may have.
When Can We Patent a Process? Debate on Bilski v. Kappos
How should we determine when a "process" can be patented? The Federalist Society will be hosting a debate between Professor Michael Risch of the Villanova University School of Law and Professor Mark Janis, who will discuss the implications of last year's important U.S. Supreme Court case Bilski v. Kappos. Free Chick-Fil-A lunch will be provided, as will beverages. This event takes place at noon in room 124.
Dress for Success
Join local attorney Andy Mallor, JD'74, owner of Andrew Davis Men's Store and partner at Mallor Clendening Grodner & Bohrer LLP, for a session on dressing for success in the legal profession. Mr. Mallor will present tips and the latest fashion trends from 7 to 9 p.m. in the store, on the downtown square.

Globalization of Legal Education and Institution Building: India's Challenges for Establishing a Greater Rule of Law Society in the 21st Century

Update on Marriage, Adoption, and Don't Ask/Don't Tell: How Unelected Judges are Giving Americans the Policies They Want
OUTlaw presents Steve Sanders, an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan School of Law and attorney at Mayer Brown LLC in Chicago. Mr. Sanders will review recent court decisions on various LGBT legal issues including DOMA, Prop 8, and DADT. He will also discuss why supporters of LGBT equality should not apologize for pursuing a litigation strategy. This event takes place at noon in room 125.
Synthesizing Learning
As part of the Law School's academic enhancement program, Student Affairs Fellows will present "Synthesizing Learning" this week and the week after fall break. This session is offered both weeks because the "right" time to start outlining is up to you. During this session, get tips on outlining and study preparations. This session will be offered four times: October 12 at 4:45 p.m. (room 122), October 13 at noon (room 120), October 26 at noon (room 122), and Thursday, October 27 at 4:30 p.m. (room 122).
Career Choices: Nonprofit and Entrepreneurial Legal Careers
Join alumni and other distinguished guests for this presentation on careers in the nonprofit and entrepreneurial fields, to be held at noon in room 122. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP on Symplicity by Tuesday at noon and bring their confirmation e-mail.

Women's Law Caucus Etiquette Dinner
Once again, the Women's Law Caucus will be hosting an etiquette dinner from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Scholar's Inn Gourmet Café & Wine Bar. This will be the perfect opportunity for you to sharpen your etiquette skills before any interviews or networking plans you have over fall break. Caroline Dowd-Higgins, director in Career & Professional Development, will provide the etiquette instruction during the meal. This event is open to all law students. Aldo Leiva on Cuba
The Latino Law Student Association is proud to welcome Aldo Leiva to come speak from 7 to 8 p.m. in room 121. Mr. Leiva will address the role and challenges of Cuba's dissidents and other members of civil society in contributing to the creation of a culture and viable mechanisms to establish and sustain the rule of law in Cuba. The speaker will also briefly cover Cuba's constitutional history, current law, and potential bases for reform and/or sources for a new democratic Constitution.

Faculty News
Professor Sarah Jane Hughes was a participant in the first symposium on teaching national security law, sponsored by the National Security Law committee of the American Bar Association. The symposium, held on Friday and Saturday, October 1 and 2, brought faculty from across the nation's law schools, the military service academies and the professional war colleges together with representatives of DOJ, DHS, the various branches of the military and other government agencies involved in national security work and research.

Life Sciences Student Associate Program
The Center for the Business of Life Sciences (CBLS) at the IU Kelley School of Business is offering a Certificate in the Business of Life Sciences to select students in the sciences, medicine, informatics, law, and other programs. This highly successful and competitive program provides you interaction with top-notch industry leaders and students from many life sciences and business disciplines. An information session on the program takes place Thursday, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Kelley School of Business Graduate Building, room 0034.
Digital Policy in an Information Economy
Professor Jody Madeira is co-chairing this seminar, from Oct. 14-16, that will address a range of law and policy issues related to the legal implications of the new National Broadband Plan and contemporary digital privacy issues. The goal of Digital Policy in an Information Economy is to help business professionals, attorneys, regulators, policymakers, technologists, and academics understand and obtain practical guidance on all aspects of the National Broadband Plan, including how digital communications is affecting privacy, intellectual property, health care, the workplace, and our economy. SALDF Seeking Team to Compete in National Animal Law Competition
The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund will be sending a team to compete in the Appellate Moot Court Competition for the National Animal Law Competitions at Harvard University. All students who are seeking a JD and have completed at least one year of their studies are eligible to apply for a position on the team. If interested in applying, please e-mail Chris Pierce (chripier@indiana.edu) for more information. The application period will close on Friday, October 22.
LLSA Spanish Lunches
Please join the Latino Law Student Association for Spanish lunches — at noon on Thursdays — for those who speak some Spanish and would like to improve their speaking and listening abilities. Everyone provides their own lunches and we meet in the room next to the student lounge.
National Coming Out Day
Today is National Coming Out Day (NCOD). Please be sure to congratulate those wearing green wristbands for coming out to the Law School community! White wristbands show support for LGBT individuals and LGBT equality. If you would like to participate, wristbands will be available Monday morning in the Law School lobby.
Reed Bar Review Tabling
Reed Bar Review will table Thursday and Friday of this week. Information will be available on how Reed Bar Review can assist you in successfully passing the bar exam.
Weekly Soccer Games
Law students are organizing a soccer game every Saturday in October at 3 p.m. at the Woodlawn playing field. The field is at the corner of 10th Street and Woodlawn Avenue, next to the HPER building and not far from the IMU parking lot where the Bloomington Shuttle stops. Christian Legal Society Weekly Bible Study
The Christian Legal Society's weekly Bible Study session will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays in room 214. The sessions will run through Dec. 2.
Scheduling Events
Beginning this semester, there is a new way for faculty and student groups to schedule events. An online form is available to plan and schedule meetings. Please use this form to request a room, notify Indiana Law Annotated, and send other information about your event. You will receive confirmation that your room has been reserved after your request has been processed. When filling out your event description, please provide all information possible, especially if you are requesting that the event be publicized.
ILA Submissions
The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Information and articles for the ILA should be submitted to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. If you have questions about an item appearing in the ILA, please contact James Boyd (joboyd@indiana.edu; phone 856-1497). Indiana Law Annotated is archived online.
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter (av@exchange.iu.edu). Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
