This Week in the Law School
Did you know the Law School has an aspirational goal for you to complete 60 hours of pro bono service during your three years at Indiana Law? Get a head start this year by attending the Pro Bono Awards and Fair on Wednesday at noon. Rachael Steller, Gina Venturelli, and Alex Haugh, JD'10, will be honored for their pro bono work last year. Community organizations will be on hand afterward to connect you with available local pro bono opportunities.
Please mark your calendars for Monday, Sept. 13, when the Indiana Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Pfenning v. Lineman, a tort case in which a teenaged girl was hit in the mouth with a golf ball while driving the drink cart at a golf outing. The hearing is expected to last approximately 40 minutes in the Moot Court Room.

Faculty News
Since the end of last semester, Professor Rob Fischman gave a talk on past, present, and future trends in public land planning at the University of Colorado's law school for a conference marking the 40th anniversary of the Public Land Law Review Commission. Professor Fischman also traveled to the National Conservation Training Center to lecture senior national wildlife refuge officials on what his research means for on-the-ground and in-the-water resource management.
On April 24, the 27th Annual VITAL QUIZ BOWL of Monroe County was won by the team "Vital Statistics." The winning team consisted of Professor Bob Heidt, and two employees of the IU Physical Plant along with the teenage daughter of one of them. Other teams with Law School faculty and librarians were "Perry and the Masons" with Naomi Watts and Ralph Gaebler and "The Right Stuff" with Professor Luis Fuentes-Rohwer.

PILF: Hoosiers Outrun Cancer Team
Looking for a great way to get to know some of your fellow law students while supporting a worthwhile cause? You are in luck! The IU Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) is putting together a team for the 11th Annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer 5K Run/Walk which will be held Saturday, Sept. 18. The entrance fee is $25 with all proceeds going toward funding for the Bloomington Hospital Olcott Center for Cancer Education. Registration for the race ends Friday, so please stop by our table during lunch this week to sign up. We will provide the form that you need to fill out, but please be prepared to pay the entrance fee when signing up! Mediation Training
The Community Justice Mediation Center (CJAM) is conducting a 32-hour workshop for any community member interested in helping facilitate community mediation and victim-offender reconciliation. Training will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 18, 19, 25, and 26 in room 214 at the Law School. Participants who complete the training are eligible to work as CJAM volunteer mediators; however, any community member interested in learning basic mediation skills is also welcome to participate. Professor Emeritus of Law Edwin H. Greenebaum will serve as the principle training instructor. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and taught Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation at Indiana Law until his retirement. Tuition is $200, although a sliding scale is considered when applicable and scholarships are available. Registration forms are at www.cjam.org or by e-mailing training@cjam.org. Tenant Assistance Project
Do you want to get first-hand experience interviewing clients and negotiating with landlords in a real courtroom setting? The Tenant Assistance Project (TAP) will be holding its training from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in room 213 on Thursday, Sept. 16. Dinner will be provided! Please RSVP for the training to ailcook@indiana.edu by Tuesday, Sept. 14. You must attend training before you can begin helping TAP clients.
Teaching Assistants Wanted
A professor of school law from the School of Education is looking for two or three law students (2 and 3Ls) to assist with her undergraduate school law course. Law students would assist with lesson plans, grading, and some teaching. Topics addressed in the course include church-state relations, student speech rights, special education law, teacher privacy rights, tort law, and teacher contracts. The course meets on Mondays from 6:50 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. The time commitment would be approximately three or four hours per week during the fall semester. This is not a paid position. One hour of credit might be available. If you are interested in assisting, please email a resume to Professor Suzanne Eckes at seckes@indiana.edu. Suzanne prefers applicants with an interest in school legal issues. Prior teaching experience would be helpful, too, but is not required. You also could e-mail or see Dean Fromm about questions you might have about this experience.
Tour Guides Needed
As an Indiana Law student, you have the opportunity to play a significant role in the Law School's recruiting efforts for the class of 2014. If you are interested in sharing your Law School experiences with prospective students during their visits, please plan to attend tour guide training on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at noon in room 122. This meeting will explain the Law School's tour guide program and allow you the opportunity to sign up for a weekly class/tour assignment. Lunch will be provided. If you are unable to attend the meeting but want to participate in the program, contact Dani Weatherford, director of recruitment, at maweathe@indiana.edu.
Scheduling Events
Beginning this semester, there is a new way for faculty and student groups to schedule events. An online form is available to plan and schedule meetings. Please use this form to request a room, notify Indiana Law Annotated, and send other information about your event. You will receive confirmation that your room has been reserved after your request has been processed. When filling out your event description, please provide all information possible, especially if you are requesting that the event be publicized.
ILA Submissions
The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Information and articles for the ILA should be submitted to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. If you have questions about an item appearing in the ILA, please contact James Boyd (joboyd@indiana.edu; phone 856-1497). Indiana Law Annotated is archived online.
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter (av@exchange.iu.edu). Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
