The Rapheal M. Prevot Barrister's Ball takes place this Friday, Feb. 12, in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union. Monday, Feb. 8, is the last day to purchase tickets for one of the Law School's most anticipated events of the year!
MONDAY, FEB. 8
Postponed -- The Financial Crisis: Will More Stimulus and Regulation Save Our Economy?
The financial crisis debate scheduled for Monday, Feb. 8, has been postponed. The event's organizers have rescheduled the event for Monday, Feb. 22, at noon.
Environmental Law Society Meeting
ELS will hold a meeting on Monday, Feb. 8, at noon in room 120. The subject of the meeting will be careers in environmental law, and a panel of upperclassmen will share their job experiences and take questions. Lunch will be provided. Federal Government Workshop
The Office of Career & Professional Development presents a federal government workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 9, from noon to 1 p.m. in room 125. Dean Michael Keller will talk about applications for federal jobs, internships, and the honors program. Please RSVP on Symplicity.
FLF Meeting
The Feminist Law Forum (FLF) will be hosting its February meeting at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 9, in room 215. Lunch will be provided. We will be discussing this semester's upcoming events including one of FLF's biggest events of the year, Women in Law Day. Women in Law Day is a full-day event for 25 area high school women to learn about careers in the law. Last year students participated in a mock law class, viewed an oral argument, discussed professional legal attire, and learned about the spectrum of career opportunities for attorneys. We are looking for one or two people to chair this event. Please e-mail meshiple@indiana.edu if you are interested in getting involved but cannot attend the meeting. Remember, this is a great opportunity for 1Ls to get leadership experience!

OCPD Career Choices Series: Solo and Small Firm Practice
OCPD's Career Choices Series continues on Thursday, Feb. 11, with a presentation on careers in solo and small firm practices. Corinne Finnerty, JD'81, and Ted Waggoner, JD'78, will be the featured speakers at this event, which takes place from noon to 1 p.m. in room 122. Lunch will be served, but space is limited to the first 85 students who RSVP on Symplicity.

Rapheal M. Prevot Barrister's Ball on Feb. 12
Monday, Feb. 8, is your last day to purchase tickets for the Barrister's Ball, which takes place Friday, Feb. 12, in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union. Tickets are $40 for law students and $50 for non-law students. This year's event features a brand new menu, a martini bar, and a cocktail happy hour that starts at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 8 p.m. This year's theme is "A Night in Old Hollywood." Don't miss your chance to attend this wonderful event!
FACULTY NEWS
Professor Kevin Brown was interviewed by the Arizona Daily Star (Jan. 31) for a multi-part series examining desegregation 30 years after being implemented in Tucson, Ariz.
Professor Fred H. Cate authored "Playing charades with terrorists," an op-ed on airline security published by the Washington Times (Feb. 3).
The Wall Street Journal (Jan. 26) sought Professor Charles Geyh for his opinion on judicial recusals for an article looking at the effect of campaign contributions on judicial disqualifications.
Professor Joe Hoffmann's "Habeas Corpus for the Twenty-First Century, Chapter One," the introductory chapter to a forthcoming book with Vanderbilt's Nancy King, has been recognized as one of the Social Science Research Network's (SSRN) top-10 recent downloads.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Vagina Monologues
Please join the Feminist Law Forum (FLF) on Sunday, Feb. 14, to attend IU's production of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues. The show starts at 1 p.m. in the School of Fine Arts Auditorium on campus and we will be meeting in the Law School lobby at 12:20 p.m. to walk over together and buy tickets ($8 for students; $10 for non-students). All proceeds benefit Bloomington's Middle Way House and V-DAY's Campaign Against Women in the DRC.
Health and Wellness Week
The Health Law Society is sponsoring Health and Wellness Week. Events, which will begin at noon, include a health law careers panel on Feb. 15 in room 120, a health care reform debate co-hosted with the Federalist Society and Black Law Student Association on Feb. 16 in the Moot Court Room, free health packet giveaways on Feb. 17 in the main lobby, Hall Render attorney panel on Feb. 18, and a presentation on keeping your mind and body healthy in law school by our very own Macey Leigh Thompson in room 120. The Great Health Care Debate: Is Nationalized Health Care the Cure for America?
The Black Law Students Association, Federalist Society, and Health Law Society will co-host a debate panel on health care, sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation. Is President Obama's plan sound policy or bad medicine? Debaters will include Doug Bandow, senior fellow at the Cato Institute; Neville Cox, director of post graduate teaching and learning at Trinity College Dublin School of Law; and Indiana Law Professor David P. Fidler. The panel, at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 16, will be moderated by Indiana Law Professor Yvonne Cripps. The event will take place in the Moot Court Room and lunch will be provided.

Cram the Container: Supply Drive for Haiti
Indiana University has purchased and is shipping a cargo container to Haiti, filled with generous donations from the Bloomington campus and community. Goods will be distributed by relief organizations already working on the ground in Haiti. Valentine's Grams Help Aid Haiti's Relief Efforts
Love is in the air! The Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA) will be selling Valentine's Day grams through Tuesday, Feb. 9, during the noon lunch hour. We will place the gram in the mailbox of your valentine on Thursday, February 11th. A portion of the proceeds will go to Haiti relief efforts.
BARBRI Tabling
BARBRI will table from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays for the remainder of the semester. 1Ls can sign up now for any state and lock in your tuition price for your bar review class in 2012 or 2013, as well as get a helpful first-year review book containing a review of all of your required classes for your first year, example outlines, and helpful study questions. Upper-level students should stop by and pick up their upper-level review books. If you are interested in reviewing in Bloomington for a state other than Indiana, or if you have any questions about BARBRI, send an e-mail to Todd Phillips at phillita@indiana.edu. Bible Study Group
The Christian Legal Society has changed its Bible study time for this semester. CLS is holding weekly Bible study and prayer on Tuesdays at noon in room 215 of the Law School. Unsure if you'd like to attend Bible study? Have prayer requests or questions about God? Feel free to email requests, questions, or needs to Katie Khan at klkhan@indiana.edu. Prayer requests presented to the study group will remain confidential unless otherwise requested.
Admissions Tour Guides Needed
The admissions office is expecting an increase in the number of prospective student visitors this semester and will need additional assistance from tour guides. Tour guide responsibilities include escorting prospective students to a class and providing a tour of the Law School building. This is a great way to participate in the building of next year's class. If you are interested in serving as a tour guide, please contact Dani Weatherford, director of recruitment, at maweathe@indiana.edu, to schedule a short training session.
Announcing the 2010 Nathan Burkan Memorial Competition
Sponsored by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), this writing competition on copyright law is open to all second- and third-year students at Indiana Law. Two awards ($600 and $250) may be given at each participating law school, and those winning papers will then be forwarded on to the national competition. Students interested in the competition must contact Professor Marshall Leaffer at mleaffer@indiana.edu. For additional information, see www.ascap.com/burkan. Additional writing competitions are posted on the contests board across from room 022. A number of Indiana Law students have won previous writing competitions with awards as great as $4,000.
Report Your Pro Bono Hours For Graduation Recognition
All students who reported pro bono hours during the fall 2009 semester should have received an email indicating total hours reported for fall 2009. If you did not receive an email, or believe that your total hours are incorrect, please email Judy Reckelhoff and Megan Mullett, Pro Bono Fellows, at WeDoGood@indiana.edu. As a reminder: to receive graduation recognition, current 3Ls must report a minimum of 20 pro bono hours for the 2009-10 school year. (Current 2Ls must report a minimum of 40 hours before they graduate, and current 1Ls must report a minimum of 60 hours before they graduate.) Questions? Email: WeDoGood@indiana.edu.
ILA Submissions
The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Information and articles for the ILA should be submitted to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition. Length of submission is limited to 150 words, unless otherwise approved. If you have questions about an item appearing in the ILA, please contact James Boyd (joboyd@indiana.edu; phone 856-1497).
Scheduling Events
All e-mails about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter av@exchange.iu.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
