FACULTY NEWS
On Nov. 20, Professor Mark Janis presented research on design patent law at an intellectual property law symposium at Fordham University School of Law. On Nov. 4, he moderated a panel on trademark law implications of keyword advertising at a University of San Francisco School of Law symposium.
Professor Ajay Mehrotra participated in several panels at the annual Social Science History Association Conference (Nov. 12-15, Long Beach, Calif.), including as a discussant for a panel on "Institutionalizing Obligations in American Politics," as chair and discussant for a panel on "Building the Tax State," and as a panelist for a book session on his recently published co-edited volume The New Fiscal Sociology: Taxation in Comparative and Historical Perspective.

The annual PILF "Hoosier Lawyer?" T-shirt sale is underway! Stop by the PILF table during lunch hour today through Friday to purchase one or more (think holiday gifts). The T-shirts are made by American Apparel and come in a variety of colors. Short-sleeve jersey T-shirts will sell for $10; short-sleeve tri-blend T-shirts for $15; and long-sleeve jersey T-shirts for $15.
SPEA Focus Group
You are invited to participate in a focus group for research on how people make decisions. Conducted by Dr. Jen Shang, assistant professor at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, each focus group session will take approximately one hour. Focus groups will be conducted during the following time slots: 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, and Friday, Dec. 4, in room 204 of SPEA. Participants will be paid $15 for their participation, as well as receiving a full-day "A" parking pass. To participate, contact Dr. Shang's research assistant at shang.research.assistant@gmail.com with your available dates and times from the list above. In order to participate, you need to be an IU graduate student and have personal experience with donating to charities on at least five occasions.
ABA Contest
The ABA is looking for people of all ages to submit creative, thoughtful, original, three-minute videos that demonstrate the process and benefits of mediation. First prize is $1,000; second is $500. The goal of the competition is to further public understanding of mediation and to promote the use of mediation as a way to resolve disputes. The video need not address only legal disputes. The contest is open to everyone except employees of the American Bar Association and their immediate family. Entries must be submitted by Jan. 15, 2010, on YouTube. The winners will be contacted via e-mail by Feb. 28, 2010. The first- and second-place videos will be featured at the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution Spring Conference in April 2010 with more than 1,000 attendees. The section may also post links to the video submissions that help promote and further the public understanding of mediation. Announcing the 2010 Nathan Burkan Memorial Competition
Sponsored by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), this writing competition on copyright law is open to all second- and third-year students at Indiana Law. Two awards ($600 and $250) may be given at each participating law school, and those winning papers will then be forwarded on to the national competition. Students interested in the competition must contact Professor Marshall Leaffer at mleaffer@indiana.edu. For additional information, see www.ascap.com/burkan. Additional writing competitions are posted on the contests board across from room 022. A number of Indiana Law students have won previous writing competitions with awards as great as $4,000.

Fletcher Fellowship
Named after Alphonse Fletcher Sr., fellowships are awarded to scholars, writers, and artists whose work contributes to improving race relations in American society and furthers the broad social goals of the U.S. Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision of 1954. Each fellowship is in the amount of $50,000. Applications and information are available on the Fletcher Foundation Web site at www.fletcherphilanthropy.org. Report Your Pro Bono Hours For Graduation Recognition
Students who report their pro bono hours and reach the Law School's aspirational goal of 60 hours by the end of their 3L year will be recognized at graduation. CLS Bible Study
Christian Legal Society (CLS) is holding weekly Bible study and prayer on Thursdays at 8:15 a.m. in room 215 of the Law School. Unsure if you'd like to attend Bible study? Prayer requests presented to the study group will remain anonymous/confidential unless otherwise requested.
Scheduling Events
All e-mails about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter av@exchange.iu.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.

The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Information and articles for the ILA should be submitted to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition.
