Law students will model examples of proper attire for various professional situations, such as interviews, business lunch, golf outing, etc. Each model will represent a date package to use with your friends or loved ones that the audience can bid on. All the money raised will benefit the Shalom Community Center and the Protective Order Project.
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9
PILF Group Meeting
The monthly Public Interest Law Foundation meeting is at noon in room 125. Come join us to discuss public interest jobs and the annual PILF service trip. Lunch will be provided.
1L Resume Workshop
Your resume is an important part of your professional tool kit and often the first impression an employer will have of you as a candidate. This workshop, held from noon to 1 p.m. in room 123, will discuss the protocol for legal resume writing. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP on Symplicity.
FLF Gender Equity Coffee Break
The Feminist Law Forum (FLF) is hosting its fourth annual Gender Equity Coffee Break to raise awareness and provoke discussion about gender and salary inequality. Coffee, doughnuts, and bagels will be amply available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Law School lobby. Your recommended contribution is proportionate to your projected earning potential, as determined by your gender and race. All proceeds go to Middle Way House, a local center that helps victims of rape and domestic violence with housing, employment, mentoring, legal, and service needs.
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10
PDP Members Meeting
Phi Delta Phi (PDP) will hold a members meeting at noon, room TBA, to vote on pledges for initiation and discuss upcoming events and ideas.
1L Cover Letter Workshop
Your cover letter is the first writing sample a prospective employer will see. Learn the essentials of this marketing piece which introduces your resume from noon to 1 p.m. in room 123. It's so important to customize your letters since templates are counterproductive and off-putting to employers. This workshop will provide you with the tools to craft effective cover letters that get noticed. Lunch will be provided to those who RSVP on Symplicity.
FLF Meeting
The Feminist Law Forum (FLF) will have a meeting from noon to 12:55 p.m. in room 213. We are excited to have Professor Hannah Buxbaum joining us to speak about her professional career before entering the world of academia and her current research areas. We have also asked her to address issues of particular interest to FLF members such as how to maintain a work-life balance, sexism in the legal profession, and what advice she may have for young attorneys. This is a great opportunity, especially for 1Ls, to interact with a professor outside the classroom setting, and please feel free to bring questions for Professor Buxbaum. We'll also recap Gender Equity Coffee Break and finalize ideas for t-shirts. Lunch will be provided
International Finance and Emerging Global Environmental Law
The Environmental Law Society and the Department of Governance and Management at SPEA are proud to sponsor a discussion with esteemed author, attorney, and environmental advocate Bruce Rich. Rich's presentation will be on the role of public international financial institutions, like the World Bank, and their role in emerging global environmental governance. The discussion will take place from noon to 1 p.m. in room 125. Lunch will be provided to the first 100 attendees, and students from the greater campus are welcome to attend. Rich has worked for the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Environmental Defense Fund, the World Bank, and USAID. He has written several books as well as articles and editorials for publications such as The Financial Times, The Nation, The Ecologist, and The Environmental Forum. In 1988, Rich was accorded the United Nations Environment Program "Global 500 Award," the highest environmental prize given by the UN. Grad Grants Center: Finding and Applying for Post-Graduate Fellowships
Post-graduate fellowships are a great paid opportunity for law students who are pursuing research and practical experience in the public interest sector and beyond. These one- or two-year appointments often come with lucrative salaries and benefits that can lead to additional career opportunities. The GradGrants Center (GGC) is a free service that provides Indiana University graduate students with one-on-one assistance with grant proposal writing and a centralized area to access funding information. Come and learn the basics of how to find and apply for fellowships at this targeted information session from noon to 1 p.m. in room 213. Please sign up via Symplicity.
In Re Bilski Discussion
The Supreme Court oral argument in the case In re Bilski will occur early next week. The Intellectual Property Association is sponsoring a discussion about the case, led by Professors Kevin Collins and Mark Janis, from 2:20 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. in room 120. Snacks and soda will be provided.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12
Rainmaking 101 for Law Students
Join us for this informative session from noon to 1 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Successful (and happy) attorneys thrive on originating and growing client relationships. While client development is most associated with private practice, relationship-building skills will serve you well in every career context. General counsel and other senior level in-house attorneys have developed people skills that help them serve internal corporate clients — CEOs, CFOs and board members; non-profits have boards and donors; legal aid organizations depend on attorneys from their community; and in government agencies, political officials can often become your clients. No matter where you work you are going to have clients and therefore need to build relationships. Mike Evers will help you develop the right mindset for landing clients. He will also offer practical "how-to" advice. If you start thinking and acting like a rainmaker at the beginning of your career, you will have a tremendous advantage over attorneys who don't "get it" until their job security is on the line. By then it's too late. He wants you to take control of your career immediately. Evers is an entrepreneur who helps companies meet their needs for legal talent (www.everslegal.com, www.everscounsel.com). He is part owner of www.legalonramp.com. Evers received his law degree from Duke Law School and practiced employment law as an associate with Blank Rome in Philadelphia. In 1997, he moved to Chicago and opened Evers Legal Search.
1L Resume Round Table Reception
A reception following Resume Round Table will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the faculty lounge on the third floor. This is a great networking opportunity, even if you weren't able to attend the round table. RSVP on Symplicity.
Federalist Society Happy Hour
Come have a drink (half-priced martinis!) and open-minded conversation with us from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Scholars Inn, 801 N College Ave. For more information, contact: Lauren Seibold at lseibold@indiana.edu.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13
PAD Fashion Show and Auction
Phi Alpha Delta will be selling tickets this week for the sixth annual Fashion Show and Auction. Your peers will model examples of proper attire for various professional situations, such as interviews, business lunch, golf outing, etc. Each model will represent a date package to use with your friends or loved ones that the audience can bid on. The packages will include a lot of different items and perks so groups of students are encouraged to pool their money together. All the money raised will benefit the Shalom Community Center and the Protective Order Project. The event will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Bluebird. Please get your tickets at lunch or get in free by donating three items of gently used professional clothing.

UPCOMING EVENTS
Securities Fraud Debate
Should Congress overturn Stoneridge and expose lawyers and financial advisors to greater liability? The Federalist Society and Business Law Association co-host this John Templeton Foundation debate featuring M. Todd Henderson, University of Chicago Law School, and Professor Donna Nagy, at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 17, in room 122. Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA) has introduced a bill in Congress — the Liability for Aiding and Abetting Securities Violations Act (S. 1551) — that would allow shareholders to sue secondary actors like lawyers and investment advisors for fraud that is committed by their corporate clients. The legislation would essentially overturn the Supreme Court's decisions in Central Bank (1995) and more recently Stoneridge (2008). Should Congress pass the Specter bill or let the cases stand?
