THIS WEEK IN THE LAW SCHOOL
The Women's Law Caucus Etiquette Dinner will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 5, in the Federal Room at the Indiana Memorial Union. Tickets are $27.
Former Congressman Lee Hamilton, JD'56, will present a talk, "Strengthening Congress," at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Moot Court Room. Hamilton will also be on a panel discussing the challenges facing Congress on Friday, Oct. 9, at 10:30 a.m. in the Moot Court Room.
Ambassador Wendy Chamberlin will discuss the role of International Law and Interfaith Diplomacy in finding solutions for the Iraqi refugee crisis and the Obama administration's policies regarding Pakistan at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, room TBD.

Gateway to Diversity Summer Employment Program
Come out to learn more about this joint initiative between the Indiana State Bar Association and the Indiana CLEO program from noon to 1 p.m. in room 213. Food will be provided for those that RSVP on Symplicity.
WLC All-Member Meeting
The Women's Law Caucus (WLC) is having an all-member meeting for both the current WLC members and anyone interested in joining WLC. Our meeting is at noon in room 122. Lunch will be provided. WLC Etiquette Dinner
Join the Women's Law Caucus (WLC) and the Office of Career and Professional Development for the annual Etiquette Dinner. The guest speaker, Joe Boes, will guide us through an evening of fine dining from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Federal Room of the Indiana Memorial Union. Tickets are $27 and can be purchased in the Office of Career and Professional Development, located on the ground level of the Law School in room 020, and in the lobby through noon today. Get your tickets soon as space is limited. Students are welcome to purchase a ticket for a guest to attend this event.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6
Major, Lindsey & Africa Recruiting Firm Presentation: Legal Career Options
Creating a roadmap for a law student's first five or 10 years after graduation is essential. This presentation, held from noon to 1 p.m. in room 122, will offer tips on big firm practice vs. small firm practice as well as putting out your own shingle and what it means to go in-house. We'll also discuss alternative and non-practicing careers for those with a JD.
PILF Group Meeting
The next Public Interest Law Forum (PILF) group meeting will be at noon in room 125. Lunch will be provided. The focus of the meeting will be on two important topics: electing 1L representatives and hearing from representatives of several public interest law organizations from the local community. Students interested in running for 1L representative should send a one- to two-paragraph statement of interest to board@iupilf.org by Monday, Oct. 5. Representatives from Student Legal Services (SLS), Lawyers in the Library, District 10 Legal Services, Shalom HELP Clinic, Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program, and Pro Bono Fellows are scheduled to attend the meeting. Don't miss this great opportunity to get involved in public interest law in Bloomington!
Law-SPEA Joint Degree Reception
The Law School will host an informal reception for enrolled and prospective Law-SPEA joint degree students from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge (room 310). Faculty involved in advising the program will also be on hand to help answer questions. This is a great opportunity for new students considering the program to talk with existing Law-SPEA students. Beverages and snacks will be served.

Attention 1Ls! Final Call-out for Phi Delta Phi
Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity's last call-out meeting of the semester is at noon in room 120. We will be having a panel discussion on the Top Ten Lessons Learned From 1L Year. The handout and discussion will help 1Ls focus time and energy on what matters most towards being a happy and successful student at Indiana Law. We'll have food. 3L Job Search Strategies in this Difficult Economy
This session, held from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in room 124, is intended for 3Ls only and will discuss the realties of the job market and the strategies you should be implementing. From post graduation loan repayment and legal and non-legal jobs to volunteering and networking, we'll cover a variety of questions and offer practical suggestions about how to handle the job search this year.
Lee Hamilton: "Strengthening Congress"
Join former Congressman Lee Hamilton, JD'56, for the Robert Gunderson Forum in Rhetoric and Public Culture. Hamilton will present "Strengthening Congress" at 4 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Hamilton's presentation is being sponsored by The Center on Congress, which he directs, and the IU Department of Communication and Culture. A short question-and-answer session will follow his presentation.
Faculty/Student Mixer at Professor Williams' House
Current and interested Feminist Law Forum (FLF) members are invited to join female faculty members at Professor Susan Williams' house from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. This is a unique opportunity for 1Ls to network and socialize with current and future professors outside of the Law School, as well as to get to know other members of FLF. Ambassador Discusses International Law and the Iraqi Refugee Crisis
The International Law Society and the Center for the Study of Global Change are proud to sponsor a discussion with Ambassador Wendy Chamberlin regarding the role of International Law and Interfaith Diplomacy in finding solutions for the Iraqi refugee crisis. The discussion is at 3 p.m., room TBD. Another topic of discussion will be the Obama administration's policies toward Pakistan. Ambassador Chamberlin has served as the U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan and Laos. She has also served as assistant administrator in the Asia-Near East Bureau for USAID and as deputy high commissioner on refugees for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. She is currently the president of the Middle East Institute in Washington, D.C. Her years of experience in international affairs will undoubtedly provide a unique perspective for the discussion. Congressional Challenges: A Panel Discussion
Join Lee Hamilton, JD'56, and IU professors John Bodnar (History) and Marjorie Hershey (Political Science) for a panel discussion on the challenges facing Congress. Matthew Tully of the Indianapolis Star and Sylvia Smith of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette will also serve on the panel, which is being moderated by Professor Ted Carmines. The discussion will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Moot Court Room. It is being sponsored by The Center on Congress.
FACULTY NEWS
Professor Kevin Brown appeared on a panel discussion, "Are Multiracial Students Beyond Love?," at the 2009 LatCrit Conference in Washington, D.C., hosted by the American University Washington College of Law on Oct. 2. He also presented a work in progress titled "Can International Boarding Schools in Ghana be the Next Major Educational Reform Movement for Urban Schoolchildren?" On Oct. 9, he will present a paper at the Conference on the Role of Lawyers of Color held at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law. The title of his paper is "The Impact of the New Department of Education Regulations for the Classification of Race and Ethnicity on Admissions of Selective Higher Education Programs."
Professor Fred H. Cate was elected president of the national Phi Beta Kappa Society on Friday, Oct. 2, in Austin, Texas. Cate had served as the organization's vice president since April. He will serve a three-year term. Cate was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at Stanford University in 1984 and has served as a member of the Society's governing board since 2001.

Christian Legal Society (CLS) is holding Bible Study/Prayer and Fellowship on Thursdays at 8:15 a.m. in room 215 of the Law School. We will do formal study/conversation from 8:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. If you want to drop by for more informal conversation/fellowship, some of us plan to be there earlier and stay a bit later.

BARBRI Tabling
BARBRI will be tabling from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday for the remainder of the semester. 1Ls can sign up now for any state for only $50 (limited time offer, additional $50 payment due Oct. 31, 2010), lock in your tuition price for your bar review class in 2012 (or 2013), and get a helpful first-year review book containing review of all of your required classes for your first year as well as example outlines and helpful study questions. Upper-level students should stop by and pick up their upper-level review books. Upper-level student sign-up requires $250. Don't forget to sign up for the MPRE and the BARBRI MPRE review course. You must have $250 paid on your account to sign up for the MPRE review.
Scheduling Events
All e-mails about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter at av@exchange.iu.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.

The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Information and articles for the ILA should be submitted to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition.
