MONDAY, APRIL 27
Bhopal Disaster Activists Visit IUB
Professor Christiana Ochoa will join children of survivors of the Bhopal chemical disaster and young activists from India to discuss what many consider the world's worst industrial disaster, which took place Dec. 3, 1984. An informal discussion with teenage organizers Sarita Malviya and Safreen Khan and longtime Bhopal advocate Rachna Dhingra will be held from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in State Room East of the Indiana Memorial Union. Ochoa will participate in a panel discussion with Dhingra and Criminal Justice Professor Stephanie Kane from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Woodburn Hall, room 120. The activists are on a tour of the U.S. to call attention to continuing environmental problems at Bhopal and to hold corporate and governmental parties accountable for the disaster.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29
Call-out Meeting
The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) will be hosting a call-out meeting for the Undergraduate Black Law Student Association (UBLSA) at 6:30 p.m. in room 120. UBLSA will serve as a pre-law organization primarily (but not exclusively) for minority students enrolled at Indiana University Bloomington. Pizza will be provided.
FACULTY NEWS
Professor Jeannine Bell participated in the 20th Anniversary Critical Race Theory Workshop, April 4-6, 2009, in Iowa City, Iowa. On April 20, 2009 Professor Bell presented at talk to the Institute for Legal Studies at Wisconsin Law School.
Professor Rob Fischman's article, "The Divides of Environmental Law and the Problem of Harm in the Endangered Species Act," 83 Ind. L.J. 661-693 (2008), was judged one of the 20 best articles published in 2008 on the topic of environmental and land use law by a group of legal scholars convened by the Land Use and Environment Law Review. The article, published by the Indiana Law Journal, was a contribution to a symposium hosted at IU by Professor John Applegate and Fischman on information gaps in environmental law.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Faculty Teaching Awards
David Williams, the John S. Hastings Professor of Law, was honored with the Leon H. Wallace Teaching Award Monday (April 20) at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. Williams, a leading constitutional scholar and executive director of the Center for Constitutional Democracy, was recognized for his commitment to his students during the Law School's 2009 Teaching Awards Ceremony. He received the same award in 1996.
Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Mary Ellen Diekhoff, JD'86, was honored with the Adjunct Faculty Member of the Year Award. Trustees Awards were presented to Leandra Lederman, the William W. Oliver Professor of Tax Law; Mark Need, JD'92, clinical associate professor of law and the director of the Elmore Entrepreneurship Law Clinic; and Gene Shreve, the Richard S. Melvin Professor of Law.
Carwina Weng, director of the Disability Law Clinic, was presented the Leonard D. Fromm Faculty Public Interest Award for her work to help clients receive Social Security and Medicaid disability benefits.
Student Paper Published
LLM student WookBai Kim wrote "Challenging the Roots of the Subprime Mortgage Crisis: The OCC's Operating Subsidiaries Regulations and Watters v. Wachovia Bank." His paper was published by the Loyola Consumer Law Review.
Ambulance Chase Successful
Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 2009 IU Ambulance Chase. With your help, the Sports Entertainment Law Society and Health Law Society brought in more than $1,200 for the American Cancer Society! Race results are available online.
IBA Seeks Board Members
The Bloomington section of the Indianapolis Bar Association's Law Student Division is a new student organization and is looking to put together a board for next year. The organization's goal is twofold: to increase Indianapolis networking opportunities for Bloomington law students, and improve Bloomington students' awareness of fellow students interested in a career in Indianapolis. There are several board positions available next semester, so if you are interested in helping to grow this organization and networking with attorneys in Indianapolis, please e-mail next-year's IBA-LSD President Erica Sullivan (essulliv@indiana.edu), with your resume (omitting reference to GPA) and a brief statement regarding your interest.

Remember to Report Your Pro Bono Hours
Reporting your hours is important because Pro Bono Awards are given each year to the law students who reported working the most pro bono hours throughout the year. The Pro Bono Awards are sponsored by Baker & Daniels and will be awarded in the fall. Hours are considered pro bono if you did not receive credit or pay for the work performed. Volunteer work with the Protective Order Project, the Tenant Assistance Project, the Inmate Legal Assistance Program, Outreach for Legal Literacy, or similar community organizations, should be included in your pro bono hours. To report your hours, click on the link in the e-mail sent to you from probonoiulaw@gmail.com. E-mails are sent every two weeks. If you forgot to report your hours in the past, just add them in to the hours for the current week. It is not important to record the hours in the exact week you worked them. If you have any questions, please e-mail probonoiulaw@gmail.com.

Scheduling Events
All e-mails about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter at av@exchange.iu.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
