THIS WEEK IN THE LAW SCHOOL
Melanie Rowen, staff attorney for the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), will discuss both the In re Marriage Cases decision issued by the California Supreme Court last year and the ongoing litigation challenging Proposition 8 at noon on Monday, April 13, in room 120.
Professor Martin Malin, director of the Institute for Law and the Workplace at Chicago-Kent College of Law, will present the 2009 Stewart Lecture, "The Paradox of Public Sector Labor Law," at noon on Wednesday, April 15, in the Moot Court Room.
The annual faculty/student basketball tournament takes place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, in Assembly Hall.
The Indiana Law Board of Visitors and Alumni Board will meet Friday, April 17, at the Law School. The newest Academy of Law Alumni Fellows will be inducted at a reception that evening.
The IU Ambulance Chase 5k race kicks off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, in front of the Law School.
The FutureFirm 1.0 Competition will be held Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, at the Law School and the Indiana Memorial Union.
MONDAY, APRIL 13
National Center for Lesbian Rights Attorney to Speak at Law School
Melanie Rowen, staff attorney for the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), will provide an inside look at the California litigation working to provide marriage rights to gays and lesbians in California. The event is at noon in room 120. Rowen will discuss both the In re Marriage Cases decision issued by the California Supreme Court last year and the ongoing litigation challenging Proposition 8. In addition to outlining the arguments presented in both cases and discussing the In re Marriage Cases opinion as well as the recent oral arguments in the Proposition 8 litigation, she will be available to answer student questions about recent developments in marriage equality nationwide. In the past week alone, there have been major events in Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia. She will also discuss public interest lawyering and how students can get involved in civil rights work. The NCLR is lead counsel, along with the ACLU and Lambda Legal, on the writ petition recently argued before the California Supreme Court seeking to invalidate Proposition 8, the Constitutional Amendment outlawing same sex marriage. The talk is sponsored by the Lambda Law Society. Light lunch will be served. No RSVP necessary.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15
Stewart Lecture: Martin H. Malin
Professor Martin Malin, director of the Institute for Law and the Workplace at Chicago-Kent College of Law, will present the 2009 Stewart Lecture, "The Paradox of Public Sector Labor Law," at noon in the Moot Court Room. Malin writes and teaches primarily in the areas of labor and employment law. He is the author of Individual Rights Within the Union and co-author of The Legal Environment of Business: Public Law and Regulation. He is a past president of the Chicago chapter of the Industrial Relations Research Association and a past chair of the Association of American Law Schools Labor Law Section. He is a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators and the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, serves on a number of state and national arbitration panels, and is a hearing officer for the Chicago Commission on Human Rights. During 1984 and 1985 he served as consultant to the Illinois State, Local and Educational Labor Relations boards and drafted the boards' regulations implementing the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act and the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Act.
Faculty/Student Basketball Tourney
Come cheer for your team at the annual faculty/student basketball tournament, which begins at 7 p.m. in Assembly Hall. A team of law faculty will play against the winner of a round-robin tournament among four student teams. Proceeds will go to the Middle Way House and the Hoosier Hills Food Bank.

Board of Visitors, Alumni Board Meet
Alumni and friends will be in town for the Indiana Law Board of Visitors and Alumni Board meeting as well as the Academy of Law Alumni Fellows dinner and ceremony. The ALAF event recognizes an elite group of friends and alumni who provide their unwavering support to Indiana Law.
SATURDAY, APRIL 18
IU Ambulance Chase
The Health Law Society and the Sports and Entertainment Law Society are hosting the IU Ambulance Chase. It's a 5k that will start and finish at the Law School, with the course weaving through campus. Winners for each Law School class (men and women) will receive trophies, but the event is open to everyone. The race begins at 9 a.m. and will be followed by refreshments and an awards ceremony. Entry fees are $15 and can be purchased by e-mailing IUAmbulanceChase@gmail.com, or from HLS/SELS members who will be tabling the entire week from noon to 1 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society and the entry fee includes a T-shirt.
FutureFirm 1.0 Team Presentations
Indiana Law is hosting the FutureFirm 1.0 conference, which explores law firm pressures exacerbated by a business model that has remained essentially unchanged for nearly 100 years. FutureFirm is a game of strategy, skill, and endurance. The goal of the game is to craft a new law firm business model that is likely to survive and thrive 20 years into the future. The event includes 10 teams of four players each, representing in-house lawyers/general counsel, law firm partners and managers, or associates/law students. Winners will be named by a large judging panel comprised of law firm partners, in-house lawyers, academics, a legal malpractice insurers, a Gen Y lawyer, and a law firm consultant. The competition is based on a fact pattern for the fictional firm, Marbury & Madison, LLP. Team presentations for the conference competition will be from 4:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. in the Moot Court Room.

FutureFirm 1.0 Winners Announced
Final presentations for the FutureFirm 1.0 competition will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Frangipani Room at the Indiana Memorial Union. Winners of the competition will be announced at 11:30 a.m.
FACULTY NEWS
At its annual meeting in Houston on March 28, the membership of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, elected Professor Seth Lahn to the organization's National Nominating Committee.
Professor Christiana Ochoa participated on a panel March 26, on the future of corporate social responsibility organized by the International Law Students Association in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Phillip P. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition and the annual meeting of the American Society of International Law held in Washington, D.C. On March 27, she participated on a panel on business and human rights at the annual meeting of the American Society of International Law. Other participants included the special representative to the secretary general on the issue of business and human rights, a number of legal academics, and representatives of human rights and business interest groups. She presented a paper on the human rights potential of sovereign wealth funds at a Georgetown symposium on sovereign wealth funds held on April 2, 2009.

LSRJ Tabling for Signatures: Wednesday, April 15
The Law Students for Reproductive Justice (LSRJ) will table for signatures in support of a letter requesting that the Indiana Daily Student run an article outlining the services Planned Parenthood provides for the community. LSRJ is requesting this article as a follow-up to an Indiana Daily Student article about Planned Parenthood that highlighted the efforts of a student group aiming to de-fund Planned Parenthood by using crooked tactics. LSRJ hopes that, by providing the public with information on Planned Parenthood's services, we can help the community make informed decisions and counter any negative effects the article may have caused. Please swing by the table and show your support with a signature.
Health Law Moot Court Applications Due Thursday, April 16
Want to represent IUB at next year's National Health Law Moot Court Competition? The Health Law Society (HLS) is now accepting applications for its 2009 external moot court team. Students interested in representing IU Bloomington at next year's competition should send a writing sample (no more than eight pages) and a letter of interest to Laura Howard (howardl@indiana.edu) no later than Thursday, April 16. You do not need to be a member of HLS to be on the team; just demonstrate good brief writing skills, previous moot court experience, and an interest in health law. IPGA Applications Due Wednesday, April 22
The Office of International Programs and Graduate Legal Studies is taking applications for International Peer Group Advisors (IPGAs). Under the supervision of the assistant dean of International Programs and the International Programs coordinator, six to eight IPGAs mentor groups of eight to 10 graduate students enrolled in the LLM, MCL or SJD programs. IPGAs are asked to be available to work starting Aug. 17 when new international student orientation begins. IPGAs will assist with orientation, including leading breakout sessions, law school tours, Bloomington tours, and book-buying excursions. During the fall semester, IPGAs will meet regularly with their groups to discuss topics related to law school as well as adjusting to living in the United States. IPGAs will help the students in their group to find a balance between school work and socializing by planning activities and social networking. IPGAs will also meet several times per semester with International Programs staff. In the spring semester, IPGAs will continue to develop the relationships with their students on a less formal basis. Successful applicants will have a background and/or interest in international education and travel, the ability to work cross-culturally, and a developed sense of professionalism, including responsiveness to e-mails and requests, and commitment to intercultural communication. IPGAs will be paid $1,000 over two semesters. Syp to Speak at International Conference in Canada
LLM student Szymon Syp is speaking at Osgoode Hall's Graduate Law Students' Association annual conference titled "Regulating a World in Crisis." The conference will be held May 1-2 at the Osgoode Professional Development Centre in Toronto, Canada. Syp, who is Faculty of the Law and Administration at Warsaw University, will speak on "Mergers and Acquisitions in the Banking Industry: A Critique of Regulatory, Antitrust and Quasi-Nationalization Issues in the United States and European Union."
IBA Seeks Board Members
The Bloomington section of the Indianapolis Bar Association's Law Student Division has newly become a student organization and is looking to put together a board for next year. The organization's goal is twofold: increase Indianapolis networking opportunities for Bloomington law students, and improve Bloomington students' awareness of fellow students interested in a career in Indianapolis. There are several board positions available next semester, so if you are interested in helping to grow this organization and networking with attorneys in Indianapolis, please e-mail next-year's IBA-LSD President Erica Sullivan (essulliv@indiana.edu), with your resume (omitting reference to GPA) and a brief statement regarding your interest.

Remember to Report Your Pro Bono Hours
Reporting your hours is important because Pro Bono Awards are given each year to the law students who reported working the most pro bono hours throughout the year. The Pro Bono Awards are sponsored by Baker & Daniels and will be awarded in the fall. Hours are considered pro bono if you did not receive credit or pay for the work performed. Volunteer work with the Protective Order Project, the Tenant Assistance Project, the Inmate Legal Assistance Program, Outreach for Legal Literacy, or similar community organizations, should be included in your pro bono hours. To report your hours, click on the link in the e-mail sent to you from probonoiulaw@gmail.com. E-mails are sent every two weeks. If you forgot to report your hours in the past, just add them in to the hours for the current week. It is not important to record the hours in the exact week you worked them. Scheduling Events

Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter at av@exchange.iu.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
