THIS WEEK IN THE LAW SCHOOL
Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Frances Hill, JD’80, and Professor Amy Applegate, director of the Viola J. Taliaferro Family and Children Mediation Clinic, will present "Crisis in Family Law" at noon on Monday, Feb. 16, in room 121.
On Wednesday, Feb. 18, Michael Sachs, managing director in the Chicago office of Major Lindsey & Africa, will discuss choosing a practice area and the realities of contract work from noon to 1 p.m. in room 125. He will also conduct individual 20-minute career coaching sessions with students from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. (room TBD).
The Barrister's Ball will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union. Tickets are $35.
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16
Crisis in Family Law
The Family Law Society is hosting Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Frances Hill, JD'80, at noon in room 121 to speak about the "Crisis in Family Law." This topic will deal primarily with the difficulty people have in obtaining legal representation for family law cases. Professor Amy Applegate, director of the Viola J. Taliaferro Family and Children Mediation Clinic, will also speak on this issue. Judge Hill deals mainly with protective orders, small claims, divorce, and CHINS cases. In 1983, she initiated Monroe County's Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program, and has been an instructor in child abuse and neglect laws since 1986. Pizza will be provided.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 17
Lambda Law Society Meeting
The Lambda Law Society will be holding an organizational meeting at noon in room 214. The alliance of students working to promote equal rights and protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender will be holding several events this semester. Ongoing activities include organizing an GLBT Law School Alumni Council, scheduling a spring social, working with Indiana Equality on statewide activism, and inviting an exciting speaker. Resume Round Table
Bring your resume and have real attorneys review it for you from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Student Lounge. This is done in speed-dating style with five minutes per review before moving on to the next attorney. Attendance limited to 28 students, so RSVP on Symplicity.

Barrister's Ball
Please mark your calendars and let your spouses and significant others know about the Barrister's Ball, which will take place at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall of the Indiana Memorial Union. This year's event is a masked ball, but masks are optional. Voting Rights Act Speaker: Feb. 26
The Federalist Society will host Professor James Blumstein from Vanderbilt University Law School at noon on Thursday, Feb. 26, in room 120. He will be speaking about the Voting Rights Act, state redistricting plans, and the voting rights cases in front of the Supreme Court this term.

Spring Semester Admissions Tour Guides Needed
The Admissions Office is expecting an increase in the number of prospective student visitors this semester and needs assistance from student tour guides. Tour guide responsibilities include escorting prospective students to a class and providing a tour of the Law School building. This is a great way to participate in the building of next year's class. Challenges to Change
The Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO) invites submissions from graduate and professional students at IU-Bloomington for its "Challenges to Change" panel, as part of the first annual "New Voices in Academic" conference on Friday, March 27. The panel welcomes any paper, project, or presentation that focuses on change or evolution in physical or social environments, change within the arts or humanities, or change within the professional world. All papers will be peer-reviewed by a campus-wide committee of faculty and graduate students and small financial awards will be offered to quality submissions in the following categories: the Physical and Natural Sciences, the Social Sciences/Arts and Humanities, and IU-Bloomington's professional programs. The deadline for submissions is March 6, 2009. Please submit an electronic copy of your paper and/or description of your presentation or project to gpso@indiana.edu.
GPSO Calls for Nominations
The Indiana University Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO) and the University Graduate School are proud to announce the IU-Bloomington Pari Prerana Award 2009. Deadline for applications is Friday, March 20. The Pari Prerana (Essence of Inspiration) Award at Indiana University was established through the support of sponsors from the Indian subcontinent. The award strives to recognize and honor students who have overcome a severe physical, cognitive, or other health-related challenges and have demonstrated academic excellence. All advisors, graduate students, and faculty at Indiana University Bloomington are invited to nominate those students that they feel deserve special recognition for exemplary courage and determination under adverse and challenging conditions. Smoking Announcement
Student Bar Association wants to let all the Law School smokers know that the University has installed a "butt stop" for cigarette butt disposal. The receptacle is located on the northwest corner of 4th and Indiana. We strongly encourage all smokers to use this area for smoking and to responsibly dispose of the cigarette debris. Thank you!

GPSO Communications Coordinator
Tired of taking out student loan debt? Consider applying to be the communications coordinator for the Graduate and Professional Student Organization (GPSO). The GPSO (https://gpso.sitehost.iu.edu/) serves more than 8,000 graduate and professional students at IU-Bloomington by providing academic support, advocacy, community-building, and resources. The coordinator is a 20-hour per week (50% FTE) position. Compensation includes full tuition remission for 12 credits per semester and 6 credit hours during summer session (excluding non-remittable fees), subsidized Student Academic Appointee Mandatory Health Insurance, and a $12,000 stipend. The communications coordinator may also work as many as 200 summer hours at a paid hourly rate of $10/hour. The assistantship is considered taxable income. Applications are due April 1. Scheduling Events
All e-mails about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services should be sent to Max Exter at av@exchange.iu.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
