THIS WEEK IN THE LAW SCHOOL

The American Constitution Society presents a panel discussion titled "A Step Forward or a Step Back? Race, Gender, and the Media in the Democratic Primaries" at noon today in room 124. Free pizza.

The annual Women's Law Caucus (WLC) Auction begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Bluebird. All proceeds go to the Protective Order Project and Middleway House to help victims of domestic violence.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4

Studying and Working Abroad

The International Law Society (ILS) presents "Studying and working abroad this summer" from noon to 1 p.m. in room 121. Are you interested in attending one of the summer programs Dean Len Fromm has spoken about? Or is there another country where you'd like to study? Maybe you don't want to study at all, and would rather get some work experience. ILS presents a panel featuring students who studied and worked abroad last summer. Each person will tell about their experience and take questions from the audience. Additionally, an LLM student will share her experiences in working with international students at her home university, and Assistant Dean Lesley Davis will be present to answer questions. Free pizza.

ACS Panel Discussion

The American Constitution Society (ACS) presents "A Step Forward or a Step Back? Race, Gender, and the Media in the Democratic Primaries" from noon to 1 p.m. in room 124. Free pizza. Panelists include Professor Jeannine Bell (School of Law), Professor Lawrence Hanks (Political Science), Lori Henson (PhD student focusing her research on media coverage of Barack Obama), and Professor Seth Lahn (School of Law).

Spring Break Trips

The Office of Career and Professional Development is planning our annual spring break trips to Washington D.C., New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and up to two additional locations based on student interest. These trips are open to all students (1, 2, & 3Ls) and are a great opportunity to network with alumni and potential employers. The OCPD will host a planning session from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in room 122. Express interest on Symplicity for cities already scheduled, or contact Kathryn (kbullerd@indiana.edu) if you are interested in another location.

PDP Ski Trip

Phi Delta Phi (PDP) would like to invite members and nonmembers to join them for College Night at Paoli Peaks in Paoli, Ind. With your college ID, you can purchase a lift ticket for $15 or a package including the lift ticket, ski/snowboard rental, and free lessons for $29. We will be meeting in the parking lot across from the Law School at 4 p.m. to carpool to Paoli. If you unable to come until later, feel free to meet us there. The college rate lasts from 3 p.m. until 3 a.m.

Diversity Discussion

Stop by after class for delicious appetizers and interesting discussion on the importance of corporate diversity! Professor Donna Nagy will first speak about "Diversity and the Governance of Public Corporations" at 4:30 p.m. in room 120. Diverse opinions welcome to this diversity discussion. This event is the first in a series raising awareness of gender issues in different areas of the law brought to you by Feminist Law Forum.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8

Lunar New Year Celebration

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with an event hosted by International Programs and Graduate Legal Studies at 4 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. The event is open to LLM students and 2007-2008 dues paid International Law Society members. Learn about the holiday and enjoy some snacks while getting to better know our LLM students. Dues are $10. Cash/checks will be accepted at the event.

WLC Auction

"Lights, Camera... Auction!" will be held at the Bluebird from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8. Come and bid on your favorite professor packages, including everything from learning how to field strip and shoot an AK47 with the Williams's, to dinner at Tallent with delectable food and wine with Professor Baude. To see a full list of all the packages of the evening, stop by the WLC table in the hall during lunchtime. We will have program samples available so you can start planning your bidding tactics now. All proceeds raised at the Women's Law Caucus Auction will help fund the Protective Order Project (POP) and the Middle Way House, a local domestic violence shelter. Bring your friends and your checkbook... it's going to be a fun night!

UPCOMING EVENTS

PILF Spring Break Relief Trip Meeting

The Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) will host a call-out meeting Tuesday, Feb. 12, to discuss its spring break relief trip to New Orleans at 12:15 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. The trip is scheduled from March 8 through March 14. It is a great opportunity to get some real-world experience in the legal field as well as help disaster victims on the continuing road to recovery. All students are welcome! The Art of Effective Interviewing

The Office of Career and Professional Development presents the Art of Effective Interviewing from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, March 23, in the Moot Court Room. Interviewing is a skill you will use for the rest of your professional life. Plan to attend this engaging and entertaining event presented by Jon Vegosen, founding partner of Funkhouser Vegosen Liebman & Dunn Ltd., a vibrant, small-sized law firm in Chicago. Vegosen will perform a roleplay with Randi Kohn, director of administration and development and also give you an opportunity to ask questions. Funkhouser will be recruiting Indiana Law students in 2008, so they are eager to meet you and share their wisdom about the art of effective interviewing and tell you about their firm. In addition to learning about interview techniques, this is a great opportunity to network. So plan your first-impression wardrobe accordingly. All students are welcome sign up on Symplicity. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Snyder Visiting Scholar

Dr. Earl A. Snyder, a deceased alumnus of Indiana University School of Law and Cambridge University, has generously provided support for one student (current 2L, 3L, LLM, or SJD) from Indiana University to work at the Research Centre for International Law of Cambridge University during the fall of 2008 (mid-September to mid-December). Students selected in past years have been graduating 3Ls. (A current 2L, LLM, or SJD, if selected, likely would need to take a leave of absence for the fall 2007 semester.) The scholarship provides for air fare, housing, meal allowance, and a small stipend.

The Centre contemplates that the Snyder Scholar will be in residence for about three months and will conduct extensive research, primarily of his/her own development. Because the Centre expects the Snyder Scholar to work on an international law project, applicants must have had international law or equivalent courses. The Snyder Scholar should also be committed to further study of or practice in international law. Demonstrating a commitment can be done by listing courses taken in the international law area, research in international law topics, employment in the international arena, knowledge of languages, career goals, extracurricular activities, and so on.

Applicants should provide a resume, a statement of commitment to international law, and a personal research agenda of some length. Return your completed applications to Jeanne Criswell in room 022 by Monday, Feb. 18. The preliminary selection committee will be comprised of faculty. The final selection will be made by the Cambridge University Director in late March.

On-campus Interview Sign-up Deadlines

The Office of Career and Professional Development Spring On-Campus Interviewing Sign up deadlines are at 11:59 p.m. on the following dates: week #3, Feb. 4; week #4, Feb. 11; and week #5, Feb. 28. To assist you in beginning to map out your career plan, including polishing your application material, all 1L's are required to meet one-on-one with an Office of Career and Professional Development counselor at least once. We have met with more than 80 percent of 1Ls, but if you are one of the few who have not yet met with a counselor, please stop by the office soon to schedule your session with Kathryn. The deadline to complete your first session is Feb 15, so you have two weeks left.

As part of the PRACTICE Program, every 1L is required to participate in an Office of Career and Professional Development Group Mock Interview Session this semester. These sessions will be facilitated by 3L Interview Fellows and provide each student with an opportunity to sharpen their skills as they seek future employment. Feedback will be given on oral arguments, presentation skills, and general interview etiquette. Each group mock interview session will be three hours in length. Attendance will be taken. In order to make scheduling as easy as possible, there are a variety of sessions and times available every day of the week throughout February and March. You may choose a session that best fits your schedule. 1Ls may now sign up on Symplicity!

Research Assistants Needed

Professor Timothy Waters is seeking a research assistant to work on a project on implications of the termination of the Milosevic trial and on democratic processes and international intervention in Bosnia. The ideal candidate will read a major European language or a language of the former Yugoslavia, but all applications are welcome.

Waters is also seeking a research assistant to work on a project on the Bagaragaza trial and efforts to remove it from the International Tribunal to Norway rather than Rwanda due to concerns about Rwanda's death penalty. The ideal candidate will read French, but all applications are welcome. Send resume, note on relevant experience, and interests to Leslie Coss, lcoss@indiana.edu.

Kaplan PMBR Hiring Student Representatives

Kaplan PMBR is dedicated to preparing law students for law school and professional success as a provider of final exam and bar exam preparation materials and courses. Student representative commitment is approximately 20 hours per semester. Benefits include free Kaplan PMBR 6-day and 3-day courses plus monetary compensation. 2L and 1L students may apply. Students planning to work in government or public interest are particularly encouraged to apply. Career Counseling Appointments

Per NALP guidelines, 1L students may now schedule Career Counseling Appointments with the Office of Career and Professional Development. Schedule in-person only in room 020. See Kathryn Bullerdick (kbullerd@indiana.edu) in the OCPD for more information.

It's exam and outlining time. Are you starting realize you need supplements? Would you like to get a head start on buying your books for next semester? Either way, come to the SBA BOOKSTORE. Also, don't forget to bring your old books and supplements in to earn some cash as those loans run out at the end of the semester!

Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
