Phi Delta Phi Job Training

Job Search Training with Lexis Nexis--hosted by Phi Delta Phi. Learn how search for law firms on Lexis Nexis, and learn how to prepare for interviews by researching firms. The training is being held for Phi Delta Phi members and those interested in joining Phi Delta Phi; it will be at noon in room 215. Food will be provided.

Crisis in Pakistan: What is the End Game?

The IU Center on American and Global Security presents a public seminar on "Crisis in Pakistan: What is the End Game?" from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in room 214. Speakers include: Rafia Zakaria, a doctoral student here in Political Science, who is also a weekly columnist at the Daily Times in Pakistan; Aqil Shah, a doctoral candidate in Political Science at Columbia University and a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago; and Sumit Ganguly, professor of Political Science at Indiana University and director of research at the Center on American and Global Security, as well as director of the India Studies Program. Health Law Society Meeting

The Health Law Society (HLS) will hold its next meeting for all members at noon in room 216. Members and all students interested in learning about the HLS are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13

William R. Stewart Lecture in Labor and Employment Law

Laura J. Cooper, JD'74, of University of Minnesota Law School will deliver the 2007 William R. Stewart Lecture in Labor and Employment Law at noon in the Moot Court Room. Her public talk is titled "Privatizing Labor Law: The Role of Arbitrators in Implementing Neutrality/Card Check Agreements."

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14

FLF Coffeebreak: Starbucks and Donuts

Skip your Starbucks and get Starbucks coffee and Square Donuts from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby!! The Feminist Law Forum's Annual Gender Equity Coffee Break will offer coffee and donuts in exchange for a donation proportionate to one's earning power, as predicted by one's gender and race. All donations from this awareness-raising event will go to Middle Way House shelter for victims of Domestic Violence. Everyone is welcome to stop by the table for a snack, some caffeine, and eye-opening conversation about the wage gap.

Information Meeting for International Students Interested in Taking the Bar

A meeting will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Moot Court Room for International Students interested in qualifying to practice law in the United States. The primary focus will be on the New York Bar exam, but the option of becoming licensed in other states will also be addressed. If you are thinking about taking a bar examination, even if not until next summer or even later, you should attend this session. SPEA/Law Joint Programs Information Session

The School of Public and Environmental Affairs and Indiana Law host an information session at 4 p.m. in room 216. Representatives of the two schools and alumni of the programs will describe the programs leading to joint award of the JD and Master of Public Affairs degrees and the JD and Master of Science in Environmental Science degrees. They will also address the value of joint degrees and answer your questions. Each program requires only one additional year of study beyond the usual three years of law school.

Law students may apply for these joint programs during the 1L or 2L years. SPEA accepts LSAT scores in lieu of the GRE. SPEA representatives will also be available to answer questions on SPEA courses available to law students and SPEA Certificate Programs in Nonprofit Management, Urban Studies, and five other areas. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15

PDP CD Release

Phi Delta Phi's 'CD Release Party' will be held at noon in room 124. It is the deadline for incoming members to turn in their applications. During the party, the new members will receive a CD with outlines and current members' tattered (and no longer needed) Gilberts. Food will be provided.

Conference: For the Sake of the Children

Indiana Law and the IU Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences present "For the Sake of the Children: Advances in Family Dispute Resolution." This conference brings together a multi-disciplinary group of national and international scholars and practitioners to discuss the various issues facing attorneys, mediators, and judges during family disputes. Join participants in a public community forum, held from 3:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Moot Court Room.

From 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., psychology professor Robert Emery, University of Virginia, will present "Divorce Mediation versus Adversary Settlement: The Current Status of Social Science Research." From 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m., law professor Andrew Schepard, Hofstra University, will present "Kramer v. Kramer Revisited: Ethical and Practical Considerations for Lawyers and Judges in High Conflict Cases for Represented and Self Represented Parents." These presentations will be followed by a judges' panel discussion, "Views from the Bench: What Works, What Does Not Work, and What Else Should the Family Law and Psychology Community Be Developing?" Monroe and Owen County Judges Michael Hoff, Frances G. Hill, David L. Welch, Teresa D. Harper, and Frank M. Nardi, and Commissioner Brett Raper will participate on the panel, which will be moderated by Steuben County Judge William Fee, President of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC).

FACULTY NEWS

Professor Kevin Brown presented a paper titled the "Demise of the Talented Tenth" to the faculty of the University of Washington School of Law in St. Louis Nov. 2.

On Oct. 20, Professor Dawn Johnsen gave a talk to the faculty of the Indiana University School of Law Indianapolis on "Faithfully Executing the Laws: Internal Legal Constraints on Executive Power," and, on Nov. 4, she gave a talk to the Bloomington Chapter of the ACLU of Indiana at its annual meeting on "The Roberts Court."

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Research Assistants Needed for Project on National Security Letters

Professors David Fidler and Sarah Hughes are seeking 2-3 research assistants for a project on developing a guide for in-house counsel on responding to national security letters. Prior exposure to national and homeland security law preferred. Primary research assistant responsibilities will be during the spring 2008 semester, with the potential of some research beginning this semester. This project is a collaboration between the Law School, the IU Center on American and Global Security, and the American Bar Association. ABA Trial Competition Results

Congratulations to R.J. Butler, Kristina Jansen, Jeremy Handschuh, Jason Dennis, Mike McBride and Patrick Molen! These students finished second in the American Bar Association Labor and Employment Law Trial Competition in Chicago, held Nov. 3 and 4.

Career Counseling Appointments Open to 1Ls

New Law Web Site Usability Testing!

We're redesigning the Law Library on the Web (www.law.indiana.edu/library). Spend 20-30 minutes in a usability testing session and receive a law school gift. Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
