MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5

CSO Resume Roundtable

The Career Services Office will host a Resume Roundtable from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Student Lounge. Legal and career development professionals will be on hand to provide personal resume critiques that can help you make a better first impression. Please bring multiple copies of your resume on inexpensive copy paper no need to use high quality resume stock. This event is open to all students. R.S.V.P. on Symplicity. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6

Job Search Strategies Workshop

The Career Services Office hosts a General Job Search Strategies Workshop from noon to 1 p.m. in room 123. It's time to start thinking about summer job opportunities. Your summer work can lay the foundation for your future career. Learn the strategies for an effective job search including self assessment, research, application, and networking. This workshop is targeted for 1L's, but all are welcome to attend. R.S.V.P. on Symplicity. See Kathryn Bullerdick (kbullerd@indiana.edu) in the CSO for more information.

PDP Call-out Meeting

Phi Delta Phi (PDP) is holding a call-out and general meeting at noon in room 120. Come and learn about the benefits of joining PDP and about our upcoming events. The meeting will be the last meeting held before fall initiation. Food will be provided.

HLS Meeting

The Health Law Society (HLS) will hold its next meeting for all members at noon in room 214. Members and anyone else who is interested in learning about the HLS are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided.

FLF Meeting

Feminist Law Forum's (FLF) last meeting of the semester will be held at noon in room 216. Come to hear about our upcoming Gender Equity Coffee Break and to meet female faculty and learn about their course offerings for next semester. Of course, bagels and hummus will be provided for lunch!

Union Board Presents Ben Stein

Union Board presents comedian and actor Ben Stein to speak at the IU Auditorium at 7 p.m. Stein is a former lawyer, law professor, journalist, presidential speech writer (Nixon and Ford), author, and economist. He was also valedictorian of his graduating class at Yale Law School. The lecture is free for both students and non-students.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7

Callout Meeting for Study Abroad

A Study Abroad callout meeting will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. 1L's and 2L's interested in learning about opportunities to study abroad this summer or any time in the 2008 2009 academic year should attend this meeting. Learn about the different programs, the application process, and hear from past program participants and exchange students. For more information, contact Dean Len Fromm or Dean Leslie Davis.

Concerned Citizens Lecture: Meth and the Community

Will Garriott, an anthropologist from Princeton University, will present "Concerned Citizens: Community Policing in the Midst of the Methamphetamine Epidemic" at 5:30 p.m. at Ballantine Hall 005.

Calling All Cooks!

Today is the last day the Health Law Society will be accepting recipe submissions for "Briefs from the Kitchen, 2nd Edition." The first edition was featured in The Indiana Lawyer, so don't miss your chance to show off your culinary skills. Please e-mail your recipe to agravell@indiana.edu by today! We are accepting any kind of recipe: breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks. Cookbooks will go on sale in November and be delivered before finals.

Student Symplicity Training

The Career Services Office presents Student Symplicity Training from noon to 1 p.m. in room 123. Cover Letters and Job Networking for International Students

Deans Leslie Davis and Michael Keller will provide a workshop from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in room 213 for LLM, MCL, and SJD students interested in learning how to write effective cover letters and search for job and internship opportunities. The first half of the workshop will be devoted to cover letters, and the second half to networking. Feel free to attend one or both sessions.

BLSA Gong Show

The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) invites you to its annual Gong Show, held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Uncle Fester's. Those performers who fail to meet the audience's expectations will be "GONGED!" The top three performers will walk away with cash prizes!

PILF Meeting

The Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) will have a call-out meeting Tuesday, Nov. 13, at noon. Room TBA. Learn about the winter break trip and our first-ever 1L Representative board position!

William R. Stewart Lecture in Labor and Employment Law

Laura J. Cooper of University of Minnesota Law School will deliver the 2007 William R. Stewart Lecture in Labor and Employment Law on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Her public talk, "Privatizing Labor Law: The Role of Arbitrators in Implementing Neutrality/Card Check Agreements," begins at noon in the Moot Court Room.

Conference: For the Sake of the Children

Indiana Law and the IU Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences present "For the Sake of the Children: Advances in Family Dispute Resolution" on Thursday, Nov. 15. This conference brings together a multi-disciplinary group of national and international scholars and practitioners to discuss the various issues facing attorneys, mediators, and judges during family disputes. Join participants in a public community forum, held from 3:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Moot Court Room.

From 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., psychology professor Robert Emery, University of Virginia, will present "Divorce Mediation versus Adversary Settlement: The Current Status of Social Science Research." From 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m., law professor Andrew Schepard, Hofstra University, will present "Kramer v. Kramer Revisited: Ethical and Practical Considerations for Lawyers and Judges in High Conflict Cases for Represented and Self Represented Parents." These presentations will be followed by a judges' panel discussion, "Views from the Bench: What Works, What Does Not Work, and What Else Should the Family Law and Psychology Community Be Developing?" Monroe and Owen County Judges Michael Hoff, Frances G. Hill, David L. Welch, Teresa D. Harper, and Frank M. Nardi, and Commissioner Brett Raper will participate on the panel, which will be moderated by Steuben County Judge William Fee, President of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC).

FACULTY NEWS

Professor Jim Barnes has been appointed to a National Academy of Public Administration panel that will assess the executive staffing of the Department of Homeland Security, focusing on identifying and offering remedies for management and administrative gaps that could arise during the forthcoming Presidential transition. The panel expects to conclude its work in February 2008. His work on another NAPA panel focused on a system of Environmental Indicators concluded last month with the submission of a report to the Department of Interior, acting on behalf of a consortium of federal agencies. Professor Barnes has been reappointed by Secretary Samuel Bodman to the Department of Energy's Environmental Management Advisory Board .

Professor Craig Bradley delivered a paper at Rutgers (Newark) School of Law on Oct. 4 titled "Rehnquist's Legacy in Criminal Procedure," and he led a panel discussion on that subject. His draft Trial Magazine article, "The English Warning" was one of the Top 10 SSRN downloads for October in Comparative Law.

Professor Fred H. Cate gave the keynote address on Privacy and Security in Higher Education: The Policy Challenge at a conference at Arizona State University, and he was a panelist at the 18th Annual Conference of the Economic Crime Institute in Tyson's Corner, Va. He was named one of the "best privacy advisers in 2007" by Computerworld magazine. Ranked ninth, Cate was the only academic on the magazine's 25-person list of top individual privacy experts in the United States and Europe.

The new (Sept./Oct. 2007) Refuge Update, published by the U.S. FWS service, contains an essay by Professor Rob Fischman titled "Reflections on the Tenth Anniversary of the Refuge Improvement Act: The Centrality of the Mission."

Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.

ILA SUBMISSIONS

The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week.
