The Indiana Court of Appeals will hear oral argument in Shafer & Freeman Lakes Environmental Conservation Corporation v. Justin Stichnoth and Corraine Stichnoth at noon today in the Moot Court Room.

Indiana Court of Appeals Oral Argument

The Indiana Court of Appeals will hear oral argument in Shafer & Freeman Lakes Environmental Conservation Corporation v. Justin Stichnoth and Corraine Stichnoth at noon in the Moot Court Room. Judge Edward W. Najam Jr.; Judge Paul D. Mathias, JD'79; and Judge Cale J. Bradford will hear the case on appeal from White Circuit Court. Each side will have 30 minutes for argument. ELS Meeting

Don't miss this meeting of the Environmental Law Society at noon, room TBA. If you have any interest in environmental law, come listen to the professors talk about the classes they will be teaching next semester, and talk to students who have taken those classes. We will also be talking about some cool conservation opportunities and other ways to get involved with ELS. You have to eat lunch, so why not eat (free) lunch with us? For those wary of joining ELS, come to the meeting anyway don't worry, there won't be any tree-hugging, just free pizza.

PDP Trick-or-Treat Sale

Trick-or-Treat!! Phi Delta Phi (PDP) will be selling treats...AND TRICKS in the Law School lobby during the lunch hour. Law school students can pre-order a trick or a treat for their law school friends or for themselves for only $1. Delivery of the treats and tricks will take place on Halloween. It's the perfect opportunity to fright or delight your friends. They are on sale through Wednesday, Oct. 31.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30

JD/MBA Presentation

The CSO and Kelley Business school will host the Joint Degree Options Lunch and Info Session, a Program Promotion with the Kelley Business Graduate Programs from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in room 120. OWLS Halloween Trick-or-Treating

The Law School will be filled with super heroes, villains, knights, and fair ladies. All children of Law School faculty, staff, and students are invited to dress up and join in the fun. Costumed children should gather with an adult at the front lobby of the Law School beginning at 4:30 p.m. Activities will include trick-or-treating and a play about Halloween and the law put on by the Law and Drama Society. OWLS (Older and Wiser Law Students) will have a table in the first floor lobby where the children can pick up an "Evidence Bags" to store the "goodies" they find around the School.

Trick-or-treating in both the Law and Lewis Buildings will last until 5:15 p.m. Volunteers on each floor of the building will direct children to the offices participating in the event. An officer from the IU Police Department has kindly agreed to provide assistance with crossing Indiana Avenue.

The trick-or-treating will be followed by the play in the Moot Court Room at approximately 5:20 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Take advantage of this safe, fun opportunity for Halloween celebration and the chance for kids to see where their moms and dads work or go to school.

Volunteers are needed! There is plenty of work to go around. Please volunteer your time by helping set up for the event, directing the children to participating offices, or cleaning up when the festivities are over. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31

ISBA Panel Discussion

The Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) invites you for pizza and a lively panel discussion from noon to 1 p.m. in room 124. Panelists are Holly Harvey, JD'97, Bunger & Robertson; Clay Miller, JD'93, Baker & Daniels LLP; and Frank Motley, Indiana University. Learn why these lawyers feel ISBA involvement is beneficial to them and the community, and learn about free on-line legal research. Bar associations offer an opportunity for networking with practicing lawyers throughout the state as well as leadership opportunities. Clinic Information Tabling in Lobby

Tabling for spring-semester clinics will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the lobby. Students can get more information about clinics and their requirements before spring semester registration.

PDP Halloween Getaway

From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Phi Delta Phi (PDP) is offering you an excuse to avoid the trick-or-treaters who will be knocking on your apartment door. Enjoy free bread sticks, meet PDP, and relax for a couple of hours on the scariest night of the year at the Jungle Room. A holiday is a holiday, and it should be celebrated with more than just a Kit-Kat bar.

1L Resume Workshop

The Career Services Office presents a 1L Resume Workshop from noon to 1 p.m. in room 123. Your resume is an important part of your professional toolkit and often the first impression an employer will have of you as a candidate. This marketing piece will entice a recruiter to bring you in for an interview so it's important to look good on paper.

This workshop addresses protocol for legal resume writing and empowers you to make the most out of your paper first impression. Please sign up on Symplicity, and check out the resume round table session on Nov. 5, where you can have your materials critiqued one-on-one. Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana

The Career Services Office will host the Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in room 125. Interested in litigation? Then join Lonnie Johnson, JD'92, Mallor Clendening Grodner & Bohrer and chair of the Construction Law Section of the Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana, and other defense lawyers and DTCI members for an opportunity to hear about the law from defense counsel's point of view.

The Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana is an association of Indiana lawyers who defend clients in civil litigation. Their primary mission is to assist and support our members in the substantive and management aspects of their law practices. They provide a forum for their members to associate and exchange ideas. Movie Showing: Kramer v. Kramer

Professor Aviva Orenstein's family law class will view the Oscar-winning film, Kramer v. Kramer at 7 p.m. in room 124. The movie concerns a child custody battle and stars Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep. All are welcome. Popcorn and leftover Halloween candy will be served.

The Career Services Office will host a Resume Roundtable from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, in the Student Lounge. Legal and career development professionals will be on hand to provide personal resume critiques to help you make a better first impression. Job Search Strategies Workshop

Concerned Citizens Lecture: Meth and the Community

Will Garriott, an anthropologist from Princeton University, will present "Concerned Citizens: Community Policing in the Midst of the Methamphetamine Epidemic" at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Ballantine Hall 005.

Gong Show Talent Needed

The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) is seeking talent for its annual Gong Show. The Gong Show will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Uncle Fester's. The top three performers will walk away with cash prizes! Those performers who fail to meet the audience's expectations will be "GONGED!" Conference: For the Sake of the Children

Indiana Law and the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences present "For the Sake of the Children: Advances in Family Dispute Resolution" on Thursday, Nov. 15. This conference brings together a multi-disciplinary group of national and international scholars and practitioners to discuss the various issues facing attorneys, mediators, and judges during family disputes. A non-public roundtable working conference will be held during the morning and early afternoon at Indiana Law.

A public forum will be presented to the community from 3:15 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. From 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., psychology professor Robert Emery, University of Virginia, will present "Divorce Mediation versus Adversary Settlement: The Current Status of Social Science Research." From 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m., law professor Andrew Schepard, Hofstra University, will present "Kramer v. Kramer Revisited: Ethical and Practical Considerations for Lawyers and Judges in High Conflict Cases for Represented and Self Represented Parents." These presentations will be followed by a judges' panel discussion, "Views from the Bench: What Works, What Does Not Work, and What Else Should the Family Law and Psychology Community Be Developing?" Monroe and Owen County Judges Michael Hoff, Frances G. Hill, David L. Welch, Teresa D. Harper, and Frank M. Nardi, and Commissioner Brett Raper will participate on the panel, which will be moderated by Steuben County Judge William Fee, President of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC). FACULTY NEWS

On Oct. 17, Professor Charles Geyh presented a paper and moderated a panel at a conference on judicial selection hosted by the Sandra Day O'Connor Project at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. On Oct. 18, he also delivered the keynote address to the Annual Meeting of Nebraska Judges in Lincoln, Nebraska.

On Oct. 18, Professor Christiana Ochoa's most recent publication, "The Individual and Customary International Law Formation," was featured on Opinio Juris, a prominent international law blog. The entry is available at www.opiniojuris.org.

Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.

The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week.
