THIS WEEK IN THE LAW SCHOOL

Students are invited to the fall semester Town Hall Meeting with Dean Lauren Robel, which will be held at noon today in the Moot Court Room. The dean will discuss items of interest and goals for the semester. Students can also ask questions. Pizza and soda will be served.

Georgetown University law professor David Cole will talk about his new book Less Safe, Less Free: Why America Is Losing the War on Terror from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Moot Court Room. Pizza will be provided and a book signing will follow the lecture.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 1

Dean's Town Hall Meeting

The fall Town Hall Meeting with Dean Lauren Robel will be at noon in the Moot Court Room. Sponsored by the Student Bar Association, these semiannual forums are scheduled to allow an opportunity for students to learn about Dean Robel's semester goals and ask questions about items of interest. Pizza and soda will be served.

The Health Care Crisis in America

Dr. Rob Stone from Hoosiers for a Commonsense Health Plan presents "The Healthcare Crisis in America" at noon in room 125. Sponsored by the Health Law Society, this will be an interesting presentation on a very important topic. Lunch will be provided.

Food for Thought

The Latino Law Student Association (LLSA) continues the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month by kicking off the Food for Thought series at noon in room 124. We will view Coffeebreak!, a film documenting the coffee harvest on a farm near the borders of Nicaragua and Honduras. The labor starts at 12:30 p.m. and continues until six the next evening; children as young as eight work the fields to add to their family's income. Even though coffee prices increase, conditions for the farm workers in their marginal existence remain the same. Please come join us for this thought-provoking film and lunch.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2

Bailiff's Needed for Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition

1Ls and LLMs are still needed to serve as bailiffs for this fall's Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition. A bailiff callout meeting will take place at noon in the Moot Court Room. Pizza will be provided!

Bailiffs help the Competition run smoothly and experience Moot Court from an insider's perspective. In addition, this year's bailiffs will receive free T-shirts and an opportunity to win a fantastic prize from Bar/Bri! If you can't make it to the meeting, stop by the Moot Court office (Room 011) or send the board an e-mail at lawmoot@indiana.edu for more information.

Guest Speaker: A.J. Correale

The Sports & Entertainment Law Society proudly welcomes A.J. Correale, chair of Ice Miller's entertainment group, at noon in room 124. Correale will talk about his career path, which includes in-house positions with Sony Music and EMI Records, and provide practical advice for those who are interested in this field of law. Professor Robert Meitus will join him for the talk. Non-members are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided.

PDP Meeting

Phi Delta Phi (PDP) hosts a general meeting to discuss upcoming events at 12:15 p.m. in room 120.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3

Take the Fear Out of Networking

Caroline Dowd-Higgins will present "Take the Fear Out of Networking" from noon to 1 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. R.S.V.P. on Symplicity.

Recent studies report that more than 80 percent of jobs are landed as a result of networking connections. Learn the fine art of networking and how it can help you be more successful in your career pursuits. This interactive session will help you become more comfortable with this time honored technique and encourage you to tap into your network successfully.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4

Individual Mock Interviews

Practice makes perfect when it comes to interviewing, so sign up for a 30 minute private time slot to hone your skills and learn to interview like a pro. Caroline Dowd-Higgins will conduct individual mock interviews with five students from 9 a.m. to noon (30 minute slots for each student) in room 222. R.S.V.P. on Symplicity.

You may dress in your interview attire for an additional critique but this is not required. Plan for 20 minutes of questioning and 10 minutes of feedback. Bring a copy of your resume.

Blood Drive

Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity will host a blood drive for the American Red Cross downstairs in the Student Lounge from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (treats for donors!) To sign up for an appointment time, go to www.givelife.org and enter: GOIU. An appointment is not necessary, but will save time. If you are eligible, come out and give a pint. One pint can help save three lives!

Less Safe, Less Free: Why America is Losing the War on Terror

The Indiana Law student chapter of the American Constitution Society hosts Georgetown University law professor David Cole. His talk on his book, Less Safe, Less Free: Why America Is Losing the War on Terror, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Pizza will be provided and a book signing will follow the lecture.

An award-winning author, law professor, and speaker, Cole's book Less Safe, Less Free is a critique of the Bush administration's "preventive paradigm" in the "war on terror." Cole is a volunteer staff attorney for the Center for Constitutional Rights; the legal affairs correspondent for The Nation; a regular contributor to the New York Review of Books; and a commentator on National Public Radio's All Things Considered. He is the author of two award-winning books, Enemy Aliens, which received the American Book Award in 2004, and No Equal Justice: Race and Class in the American Criminal Justice System, which was named Best Non-Fiction Book of 1999 by the Boston Book Review, and Best Book on an Issue of National Policy in 1999 by the American Political Science Association.

Upland Brewery Event

Join the Health Law Society at Upland Brewery from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Professor Pat Baude will speak at 8 p.m., and tours of the brewery will be offered. Your ticket includes appetizers and a drink. Tickets will be sold in the lobby from noon to 1 p.m. this week. This event is open to all. The cost is $15 or $10 for Health Law Society members and includes one free drink and food.

The Federal Communications Law Journal, Indiana Law Journal, and the Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies invite you to participate in the inter-journal kickball tournament from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Bryan Park. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Matthew Lawless, current 3L, has won Indiana Law's First Prize in the 2007 Nathan Burkan Memorial Competition, sponsored by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. His winning entry, "Against Search Engine Volition," also carried with it a $600 award. His entry is now being considered in the national competition, where the prizes are worth as much as $3,000. Congratulations Matt!

Each year, our students win writing awards, which have included special journal publication as well as monetary prizes. Check the board and various Web sites, and submit your seminar papers or notes.

Briefs from the Kitchen Is Back!

Please submit your recipes for the second edition of "Briefs from the Kitchen," a cookbook sponsored by the Health Law Society. E-mail your recipes to agravell@indiana.edu. Cookbooks will go on sale in November and be back in time for holiday gift-giving.

Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.

ILA SUBMISSIONS

The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week.
