THIS WEEK IN THE LAW SCHOOL

All are invited to attend the Indiana Supreme Court hear Richard Brown v. State at noon on Tuesday, Jan. 30, in the Moot Court Room. The case involves a criminal conviction through the Marion County Superior Court and a vacated Indiana Court of Appeals ruling.

MONDAY, JANUARY 29

Federalist Society Call-out Meeting

The Federalist Society is hosting its second-semester call-out meeting at noon in room 120. Agenda items include the Student Symposium in Chicago (which is free for members), second semester speakers, and officer elections. All are welcome. Food and beverages will be provided.

HLS General Meeting

The Health Law Society (HLS) will have a general meeting at 12:15 p.m. in room 122 to discuss upcoming events including February's elections for next year's board and participation in Relay for Life. All are welcome!

CLS Meeting

The Christian Legal Society (CLS) will be holding a general meeting at 12:15 p.m. in room 216. We will be discussing involvement opportunities for spring semester and are looking for a few people interested in leading some projects this spring. TUESDAY, JANUARY 30

Supreme Court Oral Argument

The Indiana Supreme Court will hear Richard Brown v. State at noon in the Moot Court Room. The case involves a criminal conviction through the Marion County Superior Court and a vacated Indiana Court of Appeals ruling. The Supreme Court assumed jurisdiction over the appeal and will hear the public, 40-minute argument with a Q&A to follow. All are invited. For more information visit the School's Web site.

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31

Lunch with a Lawyer

All students are invited to attend Lunch with a Lawyer with Kip Drew, JD'89, Indiana University Counsel's Office, from noon to 1 p.m. Please sign up in Career Services.

An attorney search group will discuss seeking employment in California and the West Coast from noon to 1 p.m. in room 124. All 2Ls and 3Ls are invited.

PILF Student-Faculty Reception

The Public Interest Law Foundation is hosting its annual Student-Faculty Reception from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. All are welcome to meet and talk with faculty members about their experiences working in public interest while enjoying a spread of food and wine.

Privacy and Technology Seminar: "In Defense of Public Places"

The Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions will present two views this semester. Professor Deirdre Mulligan, a clinical professor of law and director of the Samuelson Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic at the School of Law at University of California Berkeley, will speak on the topic, "In Defense of Public Places," at a seminar from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Solarium of the Indiana Memorial Union. What kinds of risks and opportunities do technological changes in the Digital Age present to privacy, free expression, and access? The seminar begins with discussion of a case study. The lecture is at 4 p.m., followed by a response by Professor Fred Cate and further discussion. The public is invited.

LLS Meeting

The Lambda Law Society (LLS) is having its first meeting of the semester at 4:30 p.m. at the Jungle Room on Kirkwood. Join us for appetizers and fun-filled announcements of what is coming up this semester! Be there or be square.

SBA Happy Hour

The spring Student Bar Association (SBA) happy hour is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Jungle Room on Kirkwood. We look forward to seeing students and faculty at this event!

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Dawn Johnsen helped write and organize a letter to the congressional leadership on Congress's war powers and, in particular, its power to respond to Bush's plan to increase troops in Iraq.

Professor Leandra Lederman presented her paper "Harnessing the 'Invisible Hand' to Foster Income Tax Compliance" at a faculty workshop at Florida State University College of Law on Jan. 18.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Hoffmann to Appear in PBS Special on Supreme Court

Professor Joseph Hoffmann will appear on a PBS special titled "The Supreme Court." The first two segments will be shown at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31. Hoffmann's segment, titled "The Rehnquist Revolution," will be broadcast on Wednesday, Feb. 7 (check local listings). The series of four, one-hour programs examines the court from its creation of the court through the Civil War and the industrial boom and explores the court's reaction to legislation on Bill of Rights freedoms, with special attention to the explosion of civil rights cases from the early 1940s to the present. Hoffmann who clerked for Justice William Rehnquist was interviewed for the final program,"The Rehnquist Revolution." The segment investigates how the court rose in importance to become the institution most responsible for resolving the central questions of American life. The program also addresses the right to privacy, a key component in 1973's Roe v. Wade, as well as the surprising actions of an activist court in Bush v. Gore.

2007 WLC Charity Auction

Mark your calendars for Friday, Feb. 9, when the Women's Law Caucus will host its Annual Charity Auction! Proceeds benefit the Middle Way House, a shelter for domestic violence victims, and the Law School's own Protective Order Project. Check out the tables in the Law School lobby for a peek at what awaits bidders and gawkers at this law school tradition. The festivities start at 7 p.m. at Jake's (formerly Walnut Street Tap), and only you can decide...Deal or No Deal!!

Renovation Update

The work is proceeding well and is on schedule. This week, the construction team will continue to hang dry wall, so most of the noise will be nailing and screw guns. One day this week, they will be drilling a hole in the second floor by the library circulation desk. This will be done early in the morning or on Friday afternoon so that the fewest people and classes are affected. E-mail questions or concern to Colleen Pauwels at pauwels@indiana.edu.

Professor Lederman Seeks Research Assistant

Professor Leandra Lederman is seeking research assistance. The projects for which she needs assistance generally involve issues relating to (1) income tax law and/or policy or (2) litigation/courts. No particular background is required. The time commitment would be approximately 10 hours/week or as agreed otherwise. Interested students should send a resume and cover e-mail to Professor Lederman at llederma@indiana.edu and can contact her by e-mail with any questions about the position.

Open Auditions

Open Auditions for the Law and Drama Society's spring production, "London Suites," will be held from noon to 1 p.m. On Wednesday, Jan. 31, and Thursday, Feb. 1, in the Moot Court Room. No previous acting experience required. This Neil Simon play requires fun, imagination and lots of actors!

Snyder Fellowship: Request for Applications

Dr. Earl A. Snyder, a deceased alumnus of Indiana Law and Cambridge University, generously provided support for one student (current 2L, 3L, LLM, or SJD) from Indiana University to work in England for the Research Centre for International Law of Cambridge University during fall 2007 as the Snyder Visiting Scholar. Because the Centre expects the Snyder Scholar to work on an international law project, applicants must have had international law or equivalent courses and show a commitment to further study of or practice in international law. This scholarship provides for air fare, housing, meal allowance, and a small stipend. In past years, selected students have been graduating 3Ls. A current 2L or SJD, if selected, would need to take a leave of absence for the fall 2007 semester. Interested students should submit a resume, statement of commitment to international law, and a personal research agenda to Jeanne Criswell in room 022 by Monday, Feb. 19. Following preliminary selection by faculty committee, the final selection will be made by the Cambridge University Director in March. For more details or information, contact Student Affairs.

SBA Bookstore Hours

SBA will be having Bookstore Hours again this semester. Check the door for our regular hours. Feel free to come in and buy your books or drop off last semester's books to be sold. In addition, some books are not always available at the SBA Bookstore. Therefore, SBA now has an Amazon.com bookstore site. You can purchase new and used books as well as study aids at this Web site. Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
