NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Amy Applegate has been selected as a member of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Law Schools Section on Clinical Legal Education.

Professor Hannah Buxbaum served as a discussant at a Global Law Workshop held at New York University Law School.

Professor Fred H. Cate gave a speech Nov. 3 at the biennial IU Women's Colloquium; served as the lead witness on privacy and security at the first day of the Federal Trade Commission's three-day hearing on consumer protection issues in the next decade in Washington D.C. Nov. 6; and was an honoree at the International Association of Privacy Professionals' first annual dinner honoring privacy leaders in Washington D.C. Nov. 6.

Professor Joshua Fairfield spoke at the Virtual Worlds and Governance panel at State of Play/Terra Nova in New York Dec. 3-4.

In November, Professor Charles Geyh presented "Roscoe Pound, Judicial Independence and the Separation of Powers" at the South Texas College of Law in Houston; "Legal Ethics for Appellate Judges and Staff Attorneys" at the Annual Meeting of the Council of Appellate Staff Attorneys in Dallas; "The History of Judicial Independence," which was the keynote address to the annual meeting of the Appellate Judges Education Institute in Dallas; and "Judicial Campaign Speech and Judicial Selection" at the California Summit of Judicial Leaders on Judicial Election Reform.

Professor Robert Heidt, co-founder and president of the Indiana Association of Scholars, attended the Annual Meeting in Boston on Nov. 16-19.

Professor Sarah Jane Hughes attended a meeting at the Department of Defense on the implementation of the APR cap for active duty military personnel and their dependents enacted in September 2006 with an Oct. 1, 2007 effective date. She also co-authored an article titled "Developments in the Law of Stored-value and Other Prepaid Products," which was published in the American Bar Association's Business Lawyer as part of the Annual Survey of Cyberspace Law.

Professor Dawn Johnsen participated in a panel on Reproductive Rights The Next Decade at the Association of American Law Schools Annual Meeting Jan. 4 in Washington D.C.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Conference: China a Two-Way Street

A conference, "China a Two-Way Street," will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at the Westin Hotel in Indianapolis. Co-sponsored by Indiana State University, China's Liaoning University, and Networks Financial Institute, this conference features nationally recognized speakers who will discuss China's economic growth and opportunities for Indiana.

The director of the provincial Foreign Affairs Office; business leaders in the distribution, pharmaceuticals, and automotive industries; the president of Liaoning University; and other representatives will also be in attendance. Indiana Law alumnus Gaston Fernandez, JD'05, who has been teaching in Liaoning, is helping to coordinate the conference.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Results of Annual Law School Trial Tournament

The annual Law School trial tournament was held January 7-10. The overall winner was Francis Granados. Finalists were Kate Jackson, Jim Shanahan, and Peter Meyer. Special recognition awards for outstanding Opening Statements go to Liza Moore, Raza Davis, and Sandy Davis; outstanding Direct Examinations to Pete Holiday, J.D. Lyons, and Megan Dwyer, outstanding Cross-Examinations to Paul Threatt and Sara Hounshell, and outstanding Closing Arguments to Susan Castorina and Jason Clarke.

2007 National Trial Competition Team Selected

The following second-year students have been selected to represent Indiana Law: Francis Granados, Pete Holiday, Kate Jackson, Jim Shanahan, and Craig Smith. Regional competition begins Feb. 15 in Champaign, Ill.

Student Publishes in ABA Newsletter

2L Douglas Hass's article, "The Myth of Copyleft Protection: Reconciling the GPL and Linux with the Copyright Act," appears in the latest edition (Fall 2006) of the ABA Intellectual Property Law Newsletter.

SBA Bookstore Hours

SBA will be having Bookstore Hours again this semester. Check the door for our regular hours. Feel free to come in and buy your books or drop off last semester's books to be sold. In addition, some books are not always available at the SBA Bookstore. Therefore, SBA now has an Amazon.com bookstore site. You can purchase new and used books as well as study aids at this Web site. Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.

ILA SUBMISSIONS

The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Information and articles for the ILA should be submitted to ila@indiana.edu by Thursday at noon for inclusion in Monday's edition.
