MONDAY, NOVEMBER 27

Schornhorst Holds Special Session

Professor Tom Schornhorst is offering a special session of his Evidence course at 12:20 p.m. in room 121. Featured will be a tape recording of the actual kidnapping and hostage stand-off in the infamous Tony Kiritsis case that took place in Indianapolis in 1977. Professor Schornhorst then on sabbatical leave from the Law School was one of the prosecutors in the case which ended in a verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity. Come and bring your lunch to watch the tape and listen to commentary by Professor Schornhorst. All interested students, faculty, and members of the Law School community are invited to attend.

Professor Crosson Farewell Get-together

Professor Cathy Crosson will say farewell to students and other friends at a special screening of "Legally Blond" at 7 p.m. in room 121. All are invited to join the festivities.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28

Gender Equity Coffee Break

Skip your morning Starbucks, and get coffee and donuts in the lobby all morning. Feminist Law Forum will be raising awareness on gender/racial inequity in pay, and all proceeds from the event will go to Middle Way House rape crisis center.

VITA Call-out Meeting

Are you interested in tax or assisting people with disabilities? You can participate in Indiana Legal Service's VITA site. VITA is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program sponsored by the IRS. Volunteers become certified to prepare federal and state income tax forms and help taxpayers prepare and electronically submit their 2006 returns. We will focus on assisting disabled persons in Monroe and surrounding counties. You can do your own return as well. While previous coursework or experience with income tax is preferred, none is required. 1L and 2L students are especially encouraged to participate. For more information, please come to the VITA call-out meeting at noon in room 122. Snacks will be provided. Solo & Small Law Firm Presentation

All students are invited to hear Ted Waggoner, JD'78, present on solo and small law firms from noon to 1 p.m. in room 123.

Professor Leandra Lederman presented "Harnessing the 'Invisible Hand' to Foster Tax Compliance" at the National Tax Association's 99th Annual Conference on Taxation in Boston on Nov. 16.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Renovation Update

The floor grinding on the second floor is all but done, and the contractors will restrict the noise to the very early part of the day. After this week all the grinding will be completed. Things should be better from now on. The contractor will be completely quiet during the two weeks of exams.

The removal of the stairwell inside the library offices will continue this week, although the noisiest work is done. The rest of the work should be relatively quiet. They are starting to put up the new walls on both the second and third floors. Some drilling and hammering will be happening, but after the grinding it should be easier to take. They will try to be especially careful with noise near the seminar rooms.

The windows looking into the project on the second floor of the library will be there until the semester break, so if you get a chance, stop by to check out the progress. Continue to avoid the student entrance during this time as materials will be transported out of the building with a forklift.

Directed Reading Opportunity for Spring 2007

Professors of school law from the School of Education are looking for a few law students to assist with their undergraduate secondary education or elementary education school law courses. Law students would assist with lesson plans, grading, and some teaching. Topics addressed in the course include church/state relations, student speech rights, special education law, teacher privacy rights, tort law, and teacher contracts. Classes meet on Monday and/or Wednesday evenings. The time commitment consists of approximately three to five hours per week, and students can receive one directed reading credit. This is not a paid position.

If you are interested in assisting for the first eight weeks of the semester on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., please email a resume to Professor Martha McCarthy at mccarthy@indiana.edu. If you are interested in assisting for the semester on Monday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., please email a resume to Professor Suzanne Eckes at seckes@indiana.edu.

PDP Toys for Tots Drive

Phi Delta Phi (PDP) is sponsoring its annual Toys for Tots Drive. There will be a box for toys outside the Law Library entrance until the end of the finals period. New or gently-used toys will be collected, cleaned, and given to needy children for the holidays. Money donations are also accepted; just e-mail PDP Magister Rachel Clark (raeclark@indiana.edu) if you plan to give this way. Donations are greatly appreciated!

SBA Bookstore Hours

SBA will have its bookstore hours every day from noon to 1 p.m. until Dec. 1 (excluding Thanksgiving break). Take time to shop for supplements or donate supplements and books you would like to sell.

Making a Difference for Children

Would you like to make a difference for a child while also earning invaluable legal experience? Owen County Court Appointed Special Advocates are interested in law students to represent children's best interests in abuse and neglect cases. 2L and 3Ls please donate your books and supplements to the SBA bookstore. Include your name, graduation year, and price. Keep in mind that some books have come out with newer editions.

Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
