THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 13

Horia Terpe, a Romanian politician and the executive director of CADI, the premier libertarian think tank in Eastern Europe, will speak on "Vehicles of Transition to Democracy and the Free Market: Lessons Derived from the Case of Romania and other Southeastern European Countries" at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 15, in the Moot Court Room. Food will be provided.

Diana Mercer, JD'88, a sought-after mediator in Los Angeles and California, will serve as Practitioner in Residence on Monday, Nov. 13, and Tuesday, Nov. 14. She is the founder of Peace Talks Mediation Services (www.peace-talks.com) and co-author of Your Divorce Advisor: A Lawyer and a Psychologist Guide You through the Legal and Emotional Landscape of Divorce (Fireside 2001). MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13

Kelley School of Business Presentation on Joint Degree Programs

Advisers from the Kelley School of Business will make a presentation from noon to 1 p.m. in room 120 regarding degrees obtainable in conjunction with your law degree through joint-degree programs.

1L Westlaw Workshop

A 1L workshop on Westlaw is from noon to 1 p.m. in room 124. Kara Grimme, a law school graduate who serves as an academic representative for Westlaw, will demonstrate how to use the software to do searches for legal employers.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 14

1L Cover Letter Workshop

The Career Services Office presents a cover letter writing workshop for 1Ls from noon to 1 p.m. in room 125.

ELS Meeting

The final 'Fall 06' Environmental Law Society (ELS) meeting is at noon in room 122. Professor Bill Weeks will talk about the Conservation Law Clinic, and there will be updates on the new committees and spring plans. Pizza lunch will be served! Last one you can make it! See you there!

HLS Meeting

Health Law Society (HLS) will hold its final meeting of the fall semester at 12:15 p.m. in room 121. We will discuss general plans for next semester, SPEA course offerings, and the ongoing work of the Academic Initiatives Committee.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 15

Romanian Politician to Discuss Democracy

The International Law Society and the Federalist Society proudly present Horia Terpe at noon in the Moot Court Room. He will speak on the topic of "Vehicles of Transition to Democracy and the Free Market: Lessons Derived from the Case of Romania and other Southeastern European Countries." Terpe is a young, industrious Romanian politician. He is the executive director of CADI, the premier libertarian think tank in Eastern Europe. Terpe is also the chief political advisor to Mona Musca, Romanian parliament deputy and delegate to the EU Parliament. Aside from his political work, Terpe is also currently working on his PhD in political science and his dissertation is on Eastern European institutional change. Anyone remotely interested in the political realities of post-Communist Eastern Europe should not miss this speaker. Food will be provided. Expert to Give Job Search Advice

There will be a presentation by Kimm Walton, one of the foremost experts on legal job searches and careers, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Walton received her law degree from Case Western, and she is the author of such legal search books as Guerrilla Tactics for Getting the Legal Job of Your Dreams and America's Greatest Places to Work with a Law Degree. These books are part of the Career Services Resource Center. All students are encouraged to attend.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17

BLSA Gong Show Sign-ups

The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) will host the Gong Show at 7 p.m. at Uncle Fester's on Kirkwood Avenue. We are still accepting performers and will continue to accept acts until the day of the show. Those interested in performing should e-mail Phyllisia Gant at pjgant@indiana.edu or sign up on the board outside the BLSA office. Tickets will be on sale this week during the lunch hour.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Ajay Mehrotra presented his paper "The Paradox of Retrenchment: Post-World War I Republican Ascendancy and the Triumph of the Modern Fiscal State" at the Social Science History Association Conference in Minneapolis on Nov. 4. He will also present the paper on Nov. 17 at The American Society for Legal History in Baltimore.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Renovation Update

The floor grinding will continue this week, so it will be another noisy week. The grinding will mostly be on the second floor east side (closer to the library), and it will continue on the third floor. This should be the last week of the grinding. Some people have found that a Walkman or iPod helps drown out the noise.

The removal of the stairwell inside the library offices will continue this week. They will try to keep the noisiest part to early in the day. After this week, this work is anticipated to continue for one more week. The rest of the work should be relatively quiet. They are removing old duct work and putting in the new, and working on the sprinkler system and plumbing. We don't anticipate any false fire alarms again because they have worked out a system with the university that should prevent them from occurring.

Because they have not yet removed the old Rare Book Room windows, you can get a glimpse of the work on the second floor of the library. So if you are interested, check it out.

Please continue to avoid the student entrance during this time as materials will be transported out of the building with a forklift.Thanks for your patience.

Practitioner in Residence: Diana Mercer

Diana Mercer, JD'88, will be a Practitioner in Residence on Monday, Nov. 13, and Tuesday, Nov. 14. Mercer is one of the foremost mediators in Los Angeles and California. She is the founder of Peace Talks Mediation Services (www.peace-talks.com) and co-author of Your Divorce Advisor: A Lawyer and a Psychologist Guide You through the Legal and Emotional Landscape of Divorce (Fireside 2001). In addition, she has published numerous articles on the topic. Mercer and her company have garnered many awards for the quality of work provided, and she has extensive experience teaching mediation in various forums and serving as a special referee on various mediation/dispute resolution panels.

On Monday, she will be teaching in Professor Amy Applegate's Domestic Mediation Clinic in the morning, meeting with Mediation class students over the noon hour, and participating in Professor Aviva Orenstein's Family Law class from 2:20 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. She will be available for personal consultation in the Dean's Suite (room 240) from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. prior to participating in Legal Negotiations on Monday evening.

On Tuesday, she presents a Continuing Legal Education program on Advanced Mediation Topics to the local bar and to students who have taken a Mediation or Negotiations course at the Lewis Building from noon until 2:15 p.m. She then will discuss her career in the Faculty Lounge from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you are interested, please e-mail jebrown@indiana.edu. Attendance will be a first-come situation for those who have completed the relevant course work.

Don't miss this special opportunity to hear from a graduate who has built a very special career as an expert in alternative dispute resolution methods, especially mediation.

Discount for BAR/BRI Extended

The $100 discount for the BAR/BRI bar review course has been extended until Wednesday, Nov. 15. If you sign up now, you will get two books of outlines one for your first year courses, one for upper year courses. You will also be eligible for the free MPRE review course. If you miss the deadline, the price will only go up. By signing up before Nov. 15, you will lock in at today's rate with an additional $100 discount. If you can't currently afford the course, you only have to put down a deposit $100 for Indiana, $175 for all other states. The rest will be billed in April of your 3L year. If you don't know what state in which you are taking the bar, you can change your course location or state exam at any time prior to the course. 1Ls should sign up to save money and to get the outlines. BAR/BRI reps are only tabling until Nov. 15 this fall. Making a Difference for Children

Would you like to make a difference for a child while also earning invaluable legal experience? Owen County Court Appointed Special Advocates are interested in law students to represent children's best interests in abuse and neglect cases. Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
