HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 28

A discussion on Catholics in the Supreme Court will be held at noon on Monday, Nov. 28, in room 216.

"Building a Safer World: Defining the U.S.-U.N. Relationship for the 21st Century" will be held at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in room 122. The discussion will focus on global environmentalism, poverty, hunger, and health.

The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) is having a Christmas Gifts Drive from Monday, Nov. 28, to Friday, Dec. 2, in the lobby. The proceeds from the drive will benefit mothers and children at the Middle Way House here in Bloomington.

Discussion Focuses on Catholics in the Supreme Court

Dean Lauren Robel and the St. Paul Catholic Center are hosting a lunch and discourse event, featuring ... yourselves, to discuss, "Catholics in the [Supreme] Court: what difference does[n't] it make," at noon in room 216. The discussion is open to everyone. Pizza will be provided.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30

ACS, ELS, and ILS Host Discussion on U.S.-U.N. Relationship

All students and staff are invited to join an open discussion session as part of the nationwide "People Speak Initiative" at noon in room 122. Hosted by the American Constitution Society (ACS), the Environmental Law Society (ELS), and the International Law Society (ILS), the discussion, "Building a Safer World: Defining the U.S.-U.N. Relationship for the 21st Century," will focus on global environmentalism, poverty, hunger, and health. The "People Speak Initiative" is a chance for our community to engage in meaningful discourse about The United States' role in the global community and to share our personal ideas and opinions. Brief background material on these topics will be provided to aid discussion, but the comments and concerns voiced by the participants will shape the discussion. Lunch will be provided.

Union Board Sponsors Mock Appeal

The Union Board is revisiting the landmark case Roe v. Wade by sponsoring a mock Supreme Court appeal of Carhart v. Gonzales at 2 p.m. in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union.

FACULTY NEWS

Professor Jeannine Bell was on sabbatical for the Fall term. In the Spring, she will be conducting research in Chicago and serve as a visiting scholar at the American Bar Foundation. On Nov, 6 and 7, Bell was a fellow at the "Comparative Examination of International Hate Speech" conference sponsored by the Floersheimer Center at Cardozo Law School in New York City. On Nov. 15, Bell met with other hate crime experts in Toronto as part of a special meeting on hate crime called by the National Institute of Justice.

Professor Dawn Johnsen gave talks on "Replacing the Justice in the Middle: Selection Standards, Superprecedents and Constitutional Change" at the University of North Carolina Law School and Duke Law School on Nov. 16 and 17 at the invitation of chapters of the American Constitution Society.

It's a Boy!

Dean Lesley Davis and her husband Matt Murphy are pleased to welcome a very handsome new addition to the family, Paul Laszlo Murphy, who arrived in the early evening on Monday, Nov. 21. Paul weighed 7 lbs., 7 oz. and was 21 inches long. Mom, dad, and baby are healthy and happy.

BLSA Christmas Gifts Drive

The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) is having a Christmas Gifts Drive from Monday, Nov. 28, to Friday, Dec. 2. The proceeds from the drive will benefit mothers and children at the Middle Way House here in Bloomington. The Middle Way House serves as a refuge for mothers who have been victims of domestic violence. BLSA would like the Law School to help support this Christmas Gifts Drive by bringing in new or gently used women's winter clothing, new or gently used children's winter clothing, and gifts and toys for young children. There will be a table set up in the Law School hallway during lunch hours throughout the week where people can drop off their donations. Also, before and after the lunch hour, the box will be sitting outside the BLSA office, located in the basement of the Law School. For those who would prefer to make monetary donations, BLSA will also be accepting cash that will be used to purchase gifts and clothes for Middle Way House residents. BLSA hopes that the Law School community will help make this community service project as successful as other BLSA programs. Angel Tree Program

The Christian Legal Society (CLS) is taking part in the Angel Tree Christmas program this holiday. Angel Tree Christmas works by connecting parents in prison with their children through the delivery of Christmas gifts. During the week of Nov. 28, CLS members will have tables set up to collect donations to help buy Christmas presents for children of prisoners. PDP Hosts Holiday Toy Drive

Phi Delta Phi (PDP) International Legal Fraternity is hosting a Holiday Toy Drive in the lobby. If you have spare toys or some extra change, please visit the toy box at the PDP table, and help disadvantaged children have a happy holiday!

Annual Law School Trial Tournament

Plan now to participate in the Law School Trial Tournament to be held Jan. 7 through 11, just before the start of next semester. The rules are simple. The tournament is open to all 2Ls and 3Ls who have not previously competed. You do not need to be taking trial advocacy or any other course. Trial Competition Team: Spring 2006

There are several openings on the trial competition team for the spring semester. Students will be invited to join the team based on their performances in the Law School Trial Tournament, so participation in the tournament is necessary for consideration. Get Involved with the Pro Bono Project

Would you like to network with attorneys? Do you need more real-world legal experience in order to find a job or to decide what area of law to pursue? Is there a specialty area of law that you would like to pursue, but do not know how? The Pro Bono Project is pleased to announce that students can accomplish all of the above while earning one B710 credit. By becoming involved with the Pro Bono Project, students can work with local attorneys and/or pro se litigants on a variety of cases in a variety of specialty areas. Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
