HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 31

Phi Delta Phi, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will hold a blood drive from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, in the Student Lounge.

Karen Lloyd, JD'83, network vice president and general counsel of Community Health Network in Indianapolis, will discuss health law from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31, in room 120.

Jennifer Brown, vice president of Legal Momentum, will be talking to students about public interest and government work from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, in the 3rd floor Faculty Conference Room. She will also discuss issues surrounding reproductive rights from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2, in the Moot Court Room.

Auditions for the Gong Show will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, and Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Student Lounge. Sign up at the BLSA Gong Show table during the lunch hour to participate. Large monetary prizes will be awarded to the winners.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 31

PDP Holds Blood Drive

Phi Delta Phi (PDP), in conjunction with the American Red Cross, will hold a blood drive from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the student lounge. During the drive, the kitchen area of the lounge will still be available for student use. Seating in the lounge, however, will not be available. Please note that the times indicated on the flyers distributed to student mailboxes are incorrect. Please help us reach our goal of collecting 50 units of blood. This is a great way for our Law School community to have a positive impact on the blood supply at a time when resources are being stretched across the country. Snacks will be provided for donors.

Lloyd to Discuss Health Law Careers

Bring a lunch and come discuss careers in health law with Karen Lloyd, JD'83, network vice president and general counsel of Community Health Network in Indianapolis, from noon to 1 p.m. in room 120. The discussion will include how to get an "in" into the health law field, what government health jobs are like, insights into private practice, and the benefits and drawbacks of working in-house. The Community Health Network is the second largest health care network in Indiana. In addition to her responsibilities in legal affairs, Lloyd also serves on the organization's strategy group, which determines the network's strategic direction.

Sports and Entertainment Law Society Call-Out

Do you like sports? Enjoy being entertained by music and movies? Of course you do, so why not learn about all the ways the law intersects with things you actually like? The Sports and Entertainment Law Society call-out will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in room 125. It's Halloween, so candy will be provided for your enjoyment.

POP General Meeting

The Protective Order Project (POP) will have a brief general meeting from 12:10 p.m. to 1 p.m. in room 122. We will be discussing office procedures, community outreach, and committee assignments. Resume Workshop

The Career Services Office is offering a resume workshop for 1Ls from noon to 1 p.m. in room 125.

PILF Speaker Series Presents Jennifer Brown

Jennifer Brown, vice president of Legal Momentum, will be talking to students about public interest and government work from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the 3rd floor Faculty Conference Room. Wine and appetizers will be provided. If you are interested in public interest or government jobs, this is a great opportunity to learn more about both. Legal Momentum is an organization dedicated to promoting women's and girl's rights. Brown previously worked for the New York State Attorney's Office and as the director of the National Organization for Women.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2

ACS Presents Speaker on Reproductive Rights

How can the content of public commentary on abortion, which generally condemns it as, at best, a necessary evil, be reconciled with the fact that millions of women have chosen abortion? How is the anti-abortion movement connected with government policies of abstinence-only sex education and marriage promotion? What is the "partial birth" abortion ban all about? Why is the right to legal abortion seen by some as a prerequisite to women's equality? The American Constitution Society (ACS) is pleased to welcome Jennifer Brown, the vice president and legal director for Legal Momentum, an organization for advancing women's rights. Brown will discuss these complex issues in her talk, "The Gray of Reproductive Rights: Looking Beyond the Deep Discomfort," from noon to 1 p.m. in the Moot Court Room. Pizza will be provided.

"Lunch with a Lawyer" Presents Cate, Guthrie

Beth Cate of the University Counsel's Office and Phillippa Guthrie of the IU Foundation will talk about their careers for the "Lunch with a Lawyer" program at noon in the Student Lounge. Everyone is welcome, but if you want lunch, you must RSVP to Bruce Farrand (bfarrand@indiana.edu) by noon on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3

CACR Speaker Series Presents Philip MacKenzie

In the latest installment of the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) Speaker Series, Philip MacKenzie, a research scientist at Palo Alto Research Center, will present "OPAKE: A New Paradigm in Password-Authenticated Key Exchange" at noon in the Faculty Conference Room (335). The discussion will also be available via videoconference in IT414 on the IUPUI campus. MacKenzie, who has recently joined Google, will examine a fundamentally new technique for PAKE, notable for its seeming ability to avoid the intellectual property issues that have caused a delay in the wide-scale deployment of PAKE on the Internet. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend.

Resume Review - Speed Dating Style

All 1Ls who attended the resume workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 1, will have chance to meet with several practitioners from the area to have their resumes critiqued. The resume review will be held in the Student Lounge from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

ISBA Committee Sponsors Program on Indiana Bar Admissions Process

The Indiana State Bar Association's (ISBA) committee on Professional Legal Education, Admission, and Development is sponsoring a program on the process for determining "character and fitness" for admission to the Indiana Bar. The program will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9, at the IU Law School in Indianapolis, on West Street and New York Avenue. The program will include a detailed discussion of the procedures and the standards that apply as well as typical difficulties and ways to address them. PAD to Host "Judges Night"

Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) will be sponsoring "Judge's Night" at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, in the Moot Court Room. Judges Marc R. Kellams, David L. Welch, and newly elected Mary Ellen Diekhoff, JD'86, will discuss career paths, experience on the bench, and judicial roles. Following the discussion, the panel will take questions from students.

BLSA Hosts Annual Gong Show

Come see your fellow students showcase their talents (or embarrass themselves)! The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) will host its annual Gong Show from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, at Uncle Fester's, 430 E. Kirkwood Ave. There will be cash prizes for the top performers. Auditions for the Gong Show will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, and Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Student Lounge. Union Board Sponsors Mock Appeal

The Union Board is sponsoring a mock Supreme Court appeal of Roe v. Wade at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union. FACULTY NEWS

Professor Fred H. Cate spoke on information security breaches at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, the Experian Vision conference in Phoenix, the Economic Crime Institute annual conference in Washington, and at the Chamber of Commerce in Bloomington. His book chapter on data mining with former FCC chairman Newton Minow was published last week in the McGraw-Hill Handbook of Homeland Security.

Professor Collins Seeks Research Assistants

Professor Kevin Collins would like to hire one or two research assistants. The student(s) must have already taken, or be currently enrolled in, his patent class. The project involves reading a large number of district court patent cases. Students should send him an e- mail (kevcolli@indiana.edu) expressing interest, a resume, and a transcript by Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Resume Review

1Ls can walk in and have their resumes reviewed by Dean Michael Keller and Amy Conner from Nov. 7 through Nov. 11. The Career Services Office will be taking walk-ins only during the week and will not scheduling appointments.

PILF Holds Care Package Drive

The Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) will hold a Care Package Drive for soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division currently stationed in Iraq. The drive will be held from Monday, Oct. 24, to Friday, Nov. 4. PILF will have a table in the lobby during lunch both weeks and is accepting both item and monetary donations. See the flyers around the school, stop by the table, or e-mail Mary Spears (mespears@indiana.edu) for donation ideas.

PSA Collects Donations for Earthquake Victims

The IU Pakistani Students Association (PSA) will be collecting funds to help the victims of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that hit South Asia on Oct. 8. An estimated 79,000 are dead, and 3 million are injured and/or homeless. Many of the survivors, including 10,000 children, face death within the next few weeks alone unless vital supplies and aid reach them in time. The PSA and volunteers from other organizations will be collecting donations from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, through Wednesday, Oct. 26. The PSA will have stations set up at the Herman B Wells Library, the Indiana Memorial Union, the Kelley School of Business, Ballantine Hall, and the School of Education.

Professor Cate Looking for Research Assistants

Professor Fred H. Cate is looking for two research assistants with excellent research, analysis, and writing skills to work on information security and national security/privacy issues. Interested students should put a letter summarizing their interest and experience, a resume, and a transcript in Cate's box in the second-floor mail room.

Student Lounge Reserved on Wednesdays for "Lunch with a Lawyer" Program

Career Services will be hosting lunches in the Student Lounge every Wednesday through Nov. 16. We wanted to notify students who normally may use the Student Lounge between noon and 1 p.m. on Wednesdays that the Lounge has been reserved for the "Lunch with a Lawyer" program.

Get Involved with the Pro Bono Project

Would you like to network with attorneys? Do you need more real-world legal experience in order to find a job or to decide what area of law to pursue? Is there a specialty area of law that you would like to pursue, but do not know how? The Pro Bono Project is pleased to announce that students can accomplish all of the above while earning one B710 credit. By becoming involved with the Pro Bono Project, students can work with local attorneys and/or pro se litigants on a variety of cases in a variety of specialty areas. Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
