HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 3
A conference titled, "War, Terrorism, and Torture: Limits on Presidential Power in the 21st Century," will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 7, in the Law School's Moot Court Room. The keynote speaker for the conference is Harold Hongju Koh, dean of Yale Law School and the Gerard C. and Bernice Latrobe Smith Professor of International Law. Smile for the camera! There will be a school-wide photo shoot on Monday, Oct. 3, and Tuesday, Oct. 4. The photographer will be taking candid images of students, faculty, and staff throughout the school on these days. Those of you stricken by the dreaded bad hair day are welcome to step away from the camera. Thank you, everyone, for your cooperation.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7
Conference to Explore Presidential Powers in Wartime
The Indiana University School of Law Bloomington and the American Constitution Society are hosting a conference to examine presidential power in conventional armed conflicts as well as in the "war on terror." The conference, "War, Terrorism, and Torture: Limits on Presidential Power in the 21st Century," will be held from noon to 5 p.m. in the Law School's Moot Court Room. The keynote speaker for the conference is Harold Hongju Koh, dean of Yale Law School and the Gerard C. and Bernice Latrobe Smith Professor of International Law. Professor Dawn Johnsen is organizing the conference. Johnsen and Koh will join a panel of distinguished scholars to address crucial questions including what, if any, limits on presidential power and safeguards against abuses of power exist in the national security realm; whether the Constitution limits the president's power in wartime, as expressed recently through military tribunals, enemy combatant designations, and coercive interrogation techniques; whether any institution or source of law effectively constrains presidential power in the 21st Century; and just how far the United States will go in the name of national security. For more information, visit the Law School's conference Web site at http://www.law.indiana.edu/front/special/20051007_presidential.shtml.

Attention Runners and Walkers
The Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) and the Student Law Association (SLA) need your support. We are putting together a team to participate in the "Jill Behrman Run for the End Zone" 5K run/walk to be held on Saturday, Oct. 15. The entry fee is $15 per person. You will receive a T-shirt for your participation. Prizes will be awarded for the team with the most members and for the "most creatively attired" team. Please contact Megan (mburzych@indiana.edu) or stop by the table in the lobby this week during the lunch hour. The money goes to support Jill's House, an organization committed to providing temporary, home-like residences for patients undergoing outpatient therapy at the Indiana University Proton Therapy facility in Bloomington. Each year, more than 1,400 people participate in this event, which has raised more than $15,000 for Jill's House thus far. Other activities on race day include a Wellness Fair with more than 40 vendors.

RHA Holds Drive For Hurricane Victims
Approximately 150 people (mostly families and K-12 students) will be coming from Louisiana to live in Ashton residence hall. All residence halls will be collecting new or gently used school supplies. The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is going to make about 50 backpacks for children who will be starting school here. Also, the president of each dorm will be collecting money. RHA will be purchasing gift cards to stores around town so that families can pick out supplies they may need (toothpaste, food, clothes, etc). Any student group or individual who would like to donate school supplies can drop them off at any center desk in any residence hall (but if you can, drop them off at Eigenmann's game room, which is on the left as you walk in). Please consider donating paper, pens, pencils, erasers, rulers, calculators, crayons, markers, notebooks, folders, and glue. For more information, contact Missy Foote, Eigenmann president, at 857-8979.
Get Involved with the Pro Bono Project
Would you like to network with attorneys? Do you need more real-world legal experience in order to find a job or to decide what area of law to pursue? Is there a specialty area of law that you would like to pursue, but do not know how? The Pro Bono Project is pleased to announce that students can accomplish all of the above while earning one B710 credit. By becoming involved with the Pro Bono Project, students can work with local attorneys and/or pro se litigants on a variety of cases in a variety of specialty areas.
