UPCOMING EVENTS
Alumnus Michael Uslan to Visit Campus
Michael Uslan, JD'76, president of and producer for Branded Entertainment, will return to Bloomington Sept. 12-15 for the opening of the Michael Uslan Comic Book Collection at the IU Lilly Library. During his busy schedule on campus, the Batman films producer will meet with students from the Law School on Sept. 12 and Sept. 15 to talk about his career and participate in classes.
Uslan's gift to the Lilly Library includes 25,000 DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, and CrossGen comics, which he pledged to add to every year. To coincide with Uslan's campus visit, the Union Board will host a series of Batman-related events. Screenings of Batman and Batman Begins will take place at 8 p.m. on Sept. 8, 9, and 10 in Whittenberger Auditorium. "Alumni who haven't yet seen Batman Begins should pay attention to the Wayne Foundation building in Gotham City," said Dean Fromm. "Uslan showed his school spirit by subtly incorporating the IU logo into the 'W' on the top of the building." On Monday, Sept. 12, Uslan will present a public lecture at 8 p.m. at Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union.
Graduation Committee Meeting
A meeting for 3Ls interested in serving on the Graduation Committee will be held at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, in room 125. Students are welcome to bring their lunches.
NCSE Director to Speak on Campus
Next month, IU Bloomington will be hosting an important player in the current evolution/creationism/intelligent design debate. Dr. Eugenie Scott, the founder and executive director of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) will be on campus Sept. 21-22 and will be delivering two public lectures. Scott, known as a strong and passionate defender of evolution, frequently appears on national radio and television. Scott will give a public lecture, "The Pillars of Creationism and the Teaching of Evolution," at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the IU Auditorium. A reception will follow. The second talk, titled, "Tracking Those Incredible Creationists: Adventures as a Public Scientist," will take place at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22, in Myers Hall 130. There will be pizza in the Jordan Hall atrium.
NEWS FROM THE FACULTY
Professor John Applegate contributed a chapter, "The Story of Reserve Mining: Managing Scientific Uncertainty in Environmental Regulation," to a recent compilation, Environmental Law Stories (Thompson West, 2005).
Professor Fred H. Cate organized a two-day planning meeting for the American Law Institute on government data mining and privacy and was subsequently selected to lead the ALI's new project on regulating the government's use of personal information from the private sector. He was also chosen as a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Information for Terrorism Prevention, which will oversee a two-year study on privacy and national security. His book chapter, "Legal Standards for Data Mining," is forthcoming in 21st Century Enabling Technologies and Policies for Counter-Terrorism. Cate also met with the Secretary of Homeland Security to discuss the department's approach to privacy protection. Cate was invited to discuss his book chapter, "The Failure of Fair Information Practice Principles" (forthcoming in Consumer Protection in the Age of the 'Information Economy) with the chair and senior staff of the Federal Trade Commission. He spoke in Atlanta, New York, and Washington on information security breaches. Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels also recently appointed Cate to a two-year term as the faculty member on the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.
Professor Emeritus William Hicks's latest work, International Dimensions of U.S. Securities Law, has been published as part of the Securities Law Handbook Series (Thompson West, 2005).
On May 16, the Supreme Court handed a narrow victory to Professor Alex Tanford in Granholm v. Heald, 125 S.Ct. 1885 (2005). By a vote of 5-4, the Court declared that state laws prohibiting out-of-state wineries from selling wine directly to consumers unconstitutionally discriminated against interstate commerce despite the broad power to regulate alcoholic beverages given to states by the 21st Amendment. Tanford was lead counsel and counsel of record. He was assisted by Robert Epstein, JD'70, a wine expert who practices law in Indianapolis; Dean Kathleen Sullivan of the Stanford Law School; and former Solicitor-General Kenneth Starr. Professor Christiana Ochoa is seeking a research assistant for her current research regarding customary international law and human rights. Classes or work experience in international law, human rights, and/or a strong social science background would be useful. Sign Up for Jessup Moot Court Competition
Students interested in becoming a member of the Law School's team for the Jessup International Law Moot Court competition should begin to think about putting together their applications. The 2006 Jessup problem will raise issues concerning multinational corporations involvement in human rights violations and sovereignty over natural resources. The problem will involve a joint venture between a private company and a state-owned company, and the repercussions of its activities for a local community.
Applications for the Jessup team should include a 1-2 page resume, the latest transcript of law school grades, and a 1-page statement detailing the student's interest in international law and/or moot court. School of Education Professors Looking for Assistants
Professors who teach school law at the School of Education are looking for a few law students to assist with their undergraduate school law courses. Law students would assist with lesson plans, grading, and some teaching. Topics addressed in the courses include church/state relations, student speech rights, special education law, teacher privacy rights, tort law, and teacher contracts. The time commitment would be approximately three to five hours per week, and students would receive 1 credit. If you are interested, please e-mail Professor Suzanne Eckes at seckes@indiana.edu.
Sign Up for Alumni Weekend 2005
Join Deans Lauren Robel and Len Fromm, faculty members, and alumni from across the country as we honor three of our alumni at our Distinguished Service Award ceremony from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, in the Moot Court Room. The ceremony will begin with a champagne reception in the lobby.
Immediately following the ceremony will be the Law School bash. This is the place to mingle with your favorite faculty members, fellow students, and alumni from across the country while enjoying heavy hors d'oeuvres, drinks, and music. The bash will take place under tents on the terrace of the school and will be a casual and festive event. Champagne, beer, wine, food, and entertainment are yours for the special student rate of $5!
Join us for our annual tailgate party at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, just before the Hoosier's home opener against Nicholls State. We will be located in the tent behind the DeVault Alumni Association (across the street from Memorial Stadium). The tailgate will feature beer and barbeque and maybe, if we are lucky, Dean Fromm playing his accordion! Again, we have a special student pricing of $5. We also have discounted football tickets for sale at $26 each.

The Health Law Society is creating a fundraising cookbook, and we want your recipes! Be a part of Briefs for the Kitchen: Quick and Healthy Recipes by and for IU Law Students. Send your recipes to liblewis@indiana.edu. Please include estimated prep and cook times, an ingredients list, and instructions. All recipes are welcome (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, dessert, and drinks). Submissions will be accepted from students, faculty, and staff until Sept. 16.
Scheduling Events
All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
