HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 7

Michael S. "Mickey" Maurer, a 1967 graduate of the Law School, will give a presentation about entrepreneurship at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 8, in the Moot Court Room. Maurer, who has recently been appointed president of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, is president and CEO of Maurer/Shaw Productions, Inc.; chair of the Board of Directors of The National Bank of Indianapolis, a financial institution he founded in 1993; and chair of the Board of MyStar Communications Corporation and IBJ Corporation.

The Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies (IJGLS) will host its 13th annual conference, "Globalization and the New Politics of Labor," on Friday, Feb. 11, and Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Faculty Conference Room. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 7

PAD to Hold Annual Jewelry Sale Monday though Friday

Remember your friends and loved ones (and yourself) this Valentine's Day. Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) law fraternity will hold its third annual jewelry sale from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every day this week in the lobby. Proceeds will benefit PAD and the Protective Order Project. PAD will be selling original handmade pieces, including crystals, beads, sterling silver, gold, semiprecious gems and stones, and a limited number of scarves.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8

Alumnus Maurer to Speak about Entrepreneurship

Michael S. "Mickey" Maurer, a 1967 graduate of the Law School, will give a presentation about entrepreneurship at noon in the Moot Court Room. Maurer, who has recently been appointed president of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, is president and CEO of Maurer/Shaw Productions, Inc.; chair of the Board of Directors of The National Bank of Indianapolis, a financial institution he founded in 1993; and chair of the Board of MyStar Communications Corporation and IBJ Corporation, which owns and publishes the Indianapolis Business Journal, Court and Commercial Record, the Indiana Lawyer, and Indianapolis Prime Times. Maurer's career as an attorney and entrepreneur has included cable television, film production, radio broadcasting, newspaper publishing, and banking. In the early 1970s, he was a pioneer in the initial development and operations of cable television systems throughout Indiana and Michigan. In 2001, he established "Mickey's Camp," a charitable endeavor that has raised more than $400,000 for Indiana charities. He is the recipient of numerous awards for professionalism and philanthropy. In 1996, he was inducted into the School of Law's Academy of Law Alumni Fellows. Pizza will be available for approximately 125 students, so get your seat early.

Environmental Law Society Career Panel

The Environmental Law Society (ELS) will host a career panel featuring environmental law practitioners and judges at noon in room 124. Lunch will be provided. The career panel will feature Judge Mary Davidsen, chief environmental law judge for the Office of Environmental Adjudication (OEA); Judge Catherine Gibbs, environmental law judge for the OEA; Peter Racher, of Plews Shadley Racher & Braun; and Christian Freitag, founder of the Sycamore Land Trust.

Career Services Presentation on Federal Jobs

The Career Services Office will be hosting a presentation on federal employment opportunities from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. in room 125.

Lunar New Year Party to Feature Cooking Demonstration

The graduate law student body invites the Law School community to attend the annual Lunar New Year party, which will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. The Lunar New Year is celebrated by many eastern cultures. This year, graduate law students and their spouses will present a cooking demonstration and a tasting menu of traditional New Year's foods from Korea, China, Taiwan, and Mongolia. Those interested in learning how to make Chinese dumplings (chiao tze) should come to the third-floor kitchen at 4 p.m. Culinary delights will be served from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. This is the Year of the Rooster! Those born in the years 2005, 1993, 1981, 1969, 1957, 1945, and 1933 will receive a special prize. We hope to see you there.

Graduate Student Singles Night

Tired of seeing the same law students day in and day out? Don't have a date for Valentine's Day? All single law students are invited to join other singles from IU graduate programs at the Second Annual Graduate Student Singles Night, which will take place at 8 p.m. in the back room of Nick's English Pub. Activities will include speed dating, which starts at 8:30 p.m. "First date" attire is recommended. There is no cost, but donations will be accepted for tsunami relief and the Middle Way House. "Globalization and the New Politics of Labor": Feb. 11 and 12

The Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies (IJGLS) will host its 13th annual conference, "Globalization and the New Politics of Labor," on Friday, Feb. 11, and Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Faculty Conference Room. Conference participants will discuss how labor issues are affected by the crosscurrents and pressures of globalization. Specifically, the conference will address how evolving issues in labor, law, and politics are affected by labor and migration, labor and gender, labor and trade agreements, and labor and neo-liberal reform. Conference papers will provide the basis for a symposium issue of the IJGLS. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12

Parents and Partners Day

The Law School will host Parents and Partners Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The purpose of the program is to provide a special opportunity for families to get together in the context of a day at the Law School. The event will include welcoming remarks from Dean Robel and Dean Fromm; classes and lectures given by Professors Terry Bethel, Robert Heidt, Patrick Baude, Donald Gjerdingen, Amy Applegate, Earl Singleton, and John Applegate; and a Moot Court demonstration from 3Ls Blaire Henley and Renea Vealey Hill. The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) will host the annual Barrister's Ball from 7 p.m. to midnight on Friday, Feb. 25, at the Bloomington Convention Center. Mark your calendars! Tickets will go on sale on Monday, Feb. 14.

NEWS FROM THE FACULTY

Professor Craig Bradley's Supreme Court column, "On Custody," appeared in the February issue of Trial Magazine (pp. 58-61).

Professor Ken Dau-Schmidt's article, "An Alternative Economic Analysis of the Regulation of Unions and Collective Bargaining," has been published in Law and Economics: Alternative Economic Approaches to Legal and Regulatory Issues (2005).

Professor Rob Fischman's article, "The National Wildlife Refuge System and the Hallmarks of Modern Organic Legislation," has been republished in the Journal of Land Use and Environment Law (35 Land Use and Environment L. Rev. 483 (2004)). Fischman's article was one of six selected in the environmental law category for the journal's annual "best of" issue.

Professor Luis Fuentes-Rower's article, "In Defense of Deference," has recently been published (21 Constitutional Commentary 133 (2004)).

Professor Leandra Lederman's article, "The Entrepreneurship Effect: An Accidental Externality in the Federal Income Tax System," has recently been published (65 Ohio St. Law Journal 1401 (2004)).

Professor Ajay Mehrotra presented a paper, "Building the Modern American Fiscal State: Progressive-Era Economists and the Intellectual Foundation of the U.S. Income Tax," at the UCLA Law Review Symposium, "Rethinking Redistribution: Tax Policy in an Era of Rising Inequality," held at the UCLA Law School on Jan. 28.

Purchase Books and Study Aids through the SLA

If you would like to purchase books or study aids, please e-mail your Student Law Association (SLA) representative.

Housing and Roommate Information

The Housing Board on the ground floor across from the SLA Bookstore is now maintained by the Admissions Office. If you wish to post a housing notice, please submit your information to the Admissions Office in room 230, or e-mail the details to Dani Weatherford at maweathe@indiana.edu. All notices will be included on the housing information list that is sent out from the Admissions Office, posted on our Web site for admitted students, and posted on the board for you. There will be three categories of housing: Fall information (information from area landlords who have units available for the fall), Roommate information (information about students who are looking for roommates to share housing), and Sublet information (information about apartments that are available for summer sublet).

Scheduling Events

All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, the length of time room will be needed, the classroom requested, and the number of people attending the event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and should include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!

Audio-Video Services

Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time, and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.

ILA SUBMISSIONS

The Indiana Law Annotated (ILA) is published every Monday while school is in session with news about the coming week. Information and articles for the ILA should be submitted to ila@indiana.edu by Friday at 3 p.m. for inclusion in Monday's edition.
