HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 6
The Law School is hosting "Toward a Model Death-Penalty Code: The Massachusetts Governor's Council Report" on Friday, Sept. 10, and Saturday, Sept. 11. Conference panelists will examine 10 recommendations for a fairer and more accurate death-penalty system that were set forth by the Council, which was co-chaired by Professor Joseph Hoffmann.
The Environmental Law Society (ELS) cordially invites the Law School community to "An Evening at Oliver Winery" from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10. The event will feature live music from 3L Rodney Glover, light refreshments, a silent auction, and wine available by the glass.
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7
Environmental Law Society Meeting
The first ELS meeting of the semester will be held at noon in room 125. Pizza and refreshments will be served. Please join us!
Meeting for 3Ls on Graduation and Bar Exams
There will be a meeting for third-year law students at noon in the Moot Court Room. Primary topics include graduation issues, the formation of a graduation committee, and preliminary information regarding applying for Bar exams. The meeting is expected to last about 30 minutes.
Call-out Meeting for American Constitution Society
The American Constitution Society for Law and Policy will be having its first call-out meeting at 12:15 p.m. in the Trial Court Room (room 219). Students interested in joining this semester or learning more about the organization are encouraged to attend. Please e-mail Kevin Kimmerling (kkimmerl@indiana.edu) if you have any questions.

PILF Meeting
The first meeting of the Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) will be held at noon in the Moot Court Room. All students interested in public interest law, government work, or free lunch are encouraged to attend. If you are unable to attend but would like to be informed of further PILF activities, please e-mail gmrose@indiana.edu.
Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity Call-out Meeting
Phi Alpha Delta will hold an informational call-out meeting for students interested in joining the law fraternity at noon in room 125. This will also be the first general membership meeting of the year for all current members. Information regarding initiation, benefits of becoming a member, and the calendar of events for the year will be discussed. The logistics of outline distribution will also be discussed. Applications will be dispersed and pizza will be provided.
Interviewing Skills Workshop
Career Services is hosting an interviewing skills workshop at 12:15 p.m. in room 120.

International Law Society Call-out Meeting and Elections
The International Law Society (ILS) will host its first call-out meeting of the semester at noon in room 122. ILS will hold elections for the remaining four board positions: LLM representative, JD representative, public relations officer, and Web designer. Those who just want to see what ILS is all about and those who plan to be dedicated participants are welcome. We will collect annual member dues, which are $10 for the year. Pizza and drinks will be provided.
Resume and Cover Letter Workshop
Career Services is hosting a resume and cover letter workshop at 12:15 p.m. in room 124.
Women's Law Caucus Wine and Cheese Party
The Women's Law Caucus invites all to attend a wine and cheese party from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Faculty Lounge. There is no dress code. Come as you are!

Law School Hosts National Death-Penalty Reform Conference
The Law School is hosting "Toward a Model Death-Penalty Code: The Massachusetts Governor's Council Report" on Friday, Sept. 10, and Saturday, Sept. 11. Conference panelists will examine 10 recommendations for a fairer and more accurate death-penalty system that were set forth by the Council, which was co-chaired by Professor Joseph Hoffmann.
Leading scholars, forensic scientists, lawyers, judges, and policy-makers will focus on the major themes of the Council's report, such as narrowing the scope of death-eligible crimes, transforming the nature of capital jury decision-making, elevating the role of DNA and scientific evidence, providing judges with broad substantive review powers, and creating a new death-penalty review commission to study alleged errors in capital cases. The conference is sponsored by the Law School's Center for Law, Society, and Culture. Conference proceedings will be published in a symposium issue of the Indiana Law Journal.

Annual JD/LLM Soccer Showdown Slated for October
JD students and international graduate students kicked off the first annual JD/LLM soccer showdown last fall with a spirited competition. The rematch, otherwise known as the second annual "Socctoberfest," will be held on Friday, October 8, at Karst Farm Park. Mark your calendar! This year, the after-party will be held in the park's pavilion. Those interested in playing should contact Professor Bill Henderson at wihender@indiana.edu.
NEWS FROM THE FACULTY
Professor Kevin Brown's article entitled "Brown v. Board of Education: Re-examination of the Desegregation of Public Education from the Perspective of the Post-Desegregation Era" was published in 35 University of Toledo Law Review 773 (2004).
Professor Hannah Buxbaum's article entitled "National Courts, Global Cartels," which discussed a recent Supreme Court case on international antitrust litigation, was published in the German Law Journal.
Professor Ajay Mehrotra published an article in May entitled "More Mighty Than the Waves of the Sea: Toilers, Tariffs, and the Income Tax Movement, 1880 - 1913" in a special issue of Labor History dedicated to the historical connections between labor and the law. He also presented a paper, "Lawyers, Guns and Public Monies: The U.S. Treasury, World War I, and the Administration of the American Fiscal State," at the 2004 Tax Law History Conference at Cambridge University in July.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Jessup International Law Moot Court: Applications Due Next Monday
Applications are now being accepted for membership on this year's Jessup International Moot Court team. The team will consist of four students and will be coached by Professor Hannah Buxbaum. During the fall semester, team members will produce a written memorial (analogous to a brief); oral arguments will take place during the spring semester. Team members will receive academic credit for their participation. For further details on the Jessup competition, visit http://www.ilsa.org. All applications are welcome. Previous moot court experience and relevant international law course work will be considered, but neither is required. Priority will be given to upperclass students. Please submit a current resume and a statement of interest (covering relevant experience and reasons for interest in the competition) to Dean Leonard Fromm no later than Monday, September 13. Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition: Applications Due Friday
The deadline to withdraw from or sign up for the 2004-05 Sherman Minton Moot Court Competition is this Friday, September 10. All interested 2Ls and 3Ls who did not participate in the competition last year should complete and turn in an application form. Application forms can be found and returned to the bulletin board outside the Moot Court Office. Any person who has already signed up but wishes to withdraw from the competition should e-mail lawmoot@indiana.edu.
Pro Bono Project Offers Hands-on Legal Experience
Would you like to network with attorneys? Do you need more real-world legal experience in order to find a job or to decide what area of law to pursue? Is there a specialty area of law that you would like to pursue, but do not know how? By becoming involved with the Pro Bono Project, students are able to work with local attorneys on a variety of cases and can request a specialty area of interest. If you are interested or if you would like Janet Rumple, Pro Bono Project coordinator, to talk to your student group about this opportunity, please contact Janet (855-9809, jrumple@indiana.edu).
Student Ambassador Training
The Admissions Office is seeking student volunteers to participate in the Student Ambassador Program. As a student ambassador, you will escort prospective applicants to class, give tours of the Law School, and serve as an e-mail contact for admitted students, providing information about our school, our programs, and our community. We will host a brief training session at noon on Tuesday, September 7, in room 122. If you are interested in participating and plan to attend the session, e-mail Dani Weatherford at maweathe@indiana.edu. If you are not able to attend the meeting, stop by the Admissions Office in room 230, and pick up some materials.
Scheduling Events
All e-mail about reserving classrooms must be sent to BL-LAW-EVENTS. Mail must be sent to the correct address, bl-law-events (for Outlook users) or bl-events-law@exchange.indiana.edu (for non-Outlook users). Please include the date and time of event, length of time room will be needed, classroom requested and number of people attending event. Requests should be sent at least one week before the event and include the name of the person requesting, the organization planning the event, and an e-mail address. Confirmations will be sent by reply e-mail. Thank you!
Audio-Video Services
Requests for AV services may be sent to Beth at av@exchange.indiana.edu. Please include the name of your group and the e-mail address of the contact person, a description of what you want to do, and the date, location, starting time and duration of the event. Requests must be made at least 48 hours in advance and will be confirmed by e-mail.
