ALUMNUS ALBRIGHT IN RESIDENCE THIS WEEK

The School of Law is delighted to welcome 1965 graduate Terrill D. Albright, who will be our practitioner in residence on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday of this week. While here, Albright will participate in classes in Legal Professions, Evidence, Business Planning, Mediation, and Legal Negotiations. His office will be in the conference room in the dean's office suite. Albright will be available for student consultations on a walk-in basis between approximately 1:45 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, and between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

A civil trial attorney with Baker & Daniels in Indianapolis for more than 35 years, Albright is an arbitrator in large, complex cases and serves on the Panel of Distinguished Neutrals for the CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution. For many years, Albright's name has been synonymous with Indianapolis, state, and national bar association activities. While president of the ISBA (1993-94), he initiated Project PEACE, a peer mediation program aimed at reducing violence in schools. Albright has also been a champion of jury reform through an organization he co-founded, the Citizens Commission for the Future of Indiana Courts.

Dean's Roundtable LuncheonWednesday

Albright will be meeting with students at the Dean's Roundtable Luncheon at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in room 214. Lunch will be provided, and seating is limited to 20 participants. Those interested in signing up can do so through the sign-up sheet in room 024 or by e-mailing kcalabre@indiana.edu.

Open meeting with students Friday

Albright will address some highlights of his career, provide advice, and take student questions at an open meeting at noon on Friday, Feb. 13, in room 120.

AMAN TO SPEAK ON TAMING GLOBALIZATION THROUGH LAW REFORM TODAY

The faculty research brown bag series continues this week with Professor Alfred Aman's talk about his forthcoming book, The Democracy Deficit: Taming Globalization through Law Reform. Please join us at noon on Monday, Feb. 9, in the back room of the Student Lounge.

ILS TO HOST IVAN SHEARER TALK ON INTERNATIONAL LAW WEDNESDAY

The International Law Society (ILS) is proud to host a lecture by Ivan Shearer, the Challis Professor of International Law at the University of Sydney and our George P. Smith Distinguished Visiting Professor- Chair. Shearer will present "International Law in an Age of Perplexity" at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in room 122. During his talk, Shearer will discuss his current work with the United Nations Human Rights Committee as well as his past work with the law of the sea and the use of armed force.

STAKE TO SPEAK ON COMMON LAW NEXT WEEK

Professor Jeff Stake will give the next faculty research brown bag presentation, "The Evolution of the Common Law, " at noon on Monday, Feb. 16, in the back room of the Student Lounge.

STUDENTS PRESENT PERSPECTIVES ON BROWN V. BOARD NEXT WEEK

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's announcement of its decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, the Black Law Student Association (BLSA) is sponsoring a presentation of student perspectives on the landmark case. Students will present short essays on the subject "What Brown v. Board of Education Means to Me" at noon on Monday, Feb. 16, in the Moot Court Room. A discussion will follow. Please attend what promises to be an engaging exploration of the decision's lasting impact.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY EXPERT TO SPEAK ON U.S.-EUROPEAN RELATIONS NEXT WEEK

Sir Timothy Garden, a British international security expert with extensive military and diplomatic experience, will present "Old Friends, New Enemies: Europe and the United States in the Age of Terrorism," at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, in the Moot Court Room. Garden will be visiting the Bloomington campus from Feb. 13 to March 6 as the Class of 1941 Wells Professor in the Wells Scholars Program and as a scholar in residence at IU's Center for the Study of Global Change.

Professor Kevin Brown delivered a talk entitled "The Desegregation Era from the Perspective of the Post-Desegregation Era" on Thursday, Feb. 5, at Purdue University.

Professor Dawn Johnsen has joined the national board of directors of the American Constitution Society (ACS), a national organization of law students, law professors, and practicing lawyers that aims to restore fundamental principles of human dignity, individual rights and liberties, genuine equality, and access to justice to their rightful place in American law.

KELLER PRESENTS TWO WORKSHOPS ON APPLYING TO FEDERAL POSITIONS THIS WEEK

Michael Keller, a federal government employment specialist, will present "The Federal Government Application Process Part II" at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 10, in room 216 and again at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, in room 214. All law students interested in federal government careers are encouraged to attend one of these workshops.

BLSA VALENTINE'S DAY CARNATION SALE

The Black Law Student Association (BLSA) would like to help you woo your sweetheart(s). We will be selling carnations (your choice of red, white, or pink) from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 9, and Tuesday, Feb. 10, in the lobby. Single carnations are $3, and two carnations are $5. Carnations will be delivered on Wednesday, Feb. 11, with a card and a ribbon.

IU LAW TEAM ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS IN REGIONAL NATIONAL TRIAL COMPETITION

The Law School extends congratulations to 2Ls Layne Keele, Leslie Morse, and Jason Towns, who advanced to the semifinals in the regional National Trial Competition, which was held Feb. 5-7 in Chicago. The team was coached by IU Law alumnus Jay Meisenhelder, JD'97, and Professor Alex Tanford. The competition included 12 schools and 23 teams from Indiana and Illinois law schools. Congratulations also to student participants John O'Keefe, Justin Treasure, Jonathan Huffman, David Francisco, Matthew Wessel, Renea Vealey Hill, and Rene Castellanos for a job well done.

BAILIFFS NEEDED

Attention all 1Ls: Start preparing now for your oral arguments by participating in the Moot Court program as a bailiff. Being a bailiff is a fun and easy way to catch a glimpse of what you'll be doing at the end of the semester. Octofinals will be held Feb. 16-19, quarterfinals will be held Feb. 23-24, semifinals will be held on Feb. 26, and finals will be held on Feb. 27. GOT GAME? FACULTY-STUDENT BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT LOOKING FOR PLAYERS

The Law School is looking for student basketball players interested in participating in the Student Recreational Sports Association's faculty-student 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Friday, Feb. 27. There must be at least one professor and one student on the floor at all times. Several professors have already expressed interest in participating, and others will no doubt be glad to play if asked. CCRP OFFERING TRAINING IN EMPLOYMENT-TRANSFORMATIVE MEDIATION

The Community Conflict Resolution Program (CCRP) is offering a workshop, "Employment-Transformative Mediation Training," at the end of this month. This training is recommended for employers and employees who would like to learn more about managing conflict at work using relational principles, and for those interested in developing mediation skills for employment disputes using the transformative model of mediation. Participants who are not familiar with the concept of transformative mediation are encouraged to attend a three-hour introductory session on Friday evening, Feb. 27. The training is offered for eight hours each day on Saturday, Feb. 28, and Sunday, Feb. 29.

Registrants may register for 3 hours (Feb. 27), 16 hours (Feb. 28-29) or 19 hours (Feb. 27-29) of training. If you have questions, contact the CCRP office at 855-1618 or ccrp@bloomington.in.us. Applications can be found at http://www.bloomington.in.us/~ccrp.

2004 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LAW WRITING COMPETITION

The Computer Law Association and the Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review are sponsoring the 2004 Information Technology Law Writing Competition, which recognizes high-quality student papers on the subject of information technology law. The top paper will receive a $250 award. Two other papers will also be honored. All winners will receive a one-year Computer Law Association membership. SNYDER VISITING SCHOLAR: APPLICATIONS DUE NEXT WEEK

Dr. Earl A. Snyder, an alumnus of the School of Law (1947) and Cambridge University, has generously provided support for an IU law student (current 2L, 3L, LLM, or SJD) to work at the Research Centre for International Law of Cambridge University, England, during the fall of 2004 (September through November). A current 2L, if selected, would need to take a leave of absence for the fall semester.

Mr. Snyder will provide air fare, housing, meal allowance, and a small stipend. The Snyder Scholar will be in residence for about three months and will conduct extensive research on an international law project, primarily of his or her own development. Applicants must have taken international law or equivalent courses. The Snyder Scholar should also be committed to further study of or practice in international law. A commitment can be demonstrated by listing courses taken in the international law area, research in international law topics, employment in the international arena, knowledge of languages, career goals, extracurricular activities, and so on.

Applicants should provide a resume as well as a statement of commitment to international law and a personal research agenda. A faculty committee will make preliminary selections. The final selection will be made by the Cambridge University director in March. If you have questions, see Dean Fromm. Please return your completed applications to Dale Calabrese in room 024 by Monday, Feb. 16.
