SNYDER TO GIVE RESEARCH LECTURE TODAY
Professor David Snyder will present, "Private Lawmaking," the first lecture in this semester's faculty research brown bag series, at noon on Monday, Jan. 26, in the back room of the Student Lounge. The series is designed to provide students and faculty an opportunity to learn more about faculty members' current research, and will occur roughly every other week during the Monday lunch hour. Future speakers will include Professors Alfred Aman, Aviva Orenstein, Jeff Stake, Patrick Baude, and Elisabeth Zoller. Snyder's half-hour talk will be followed by questions and discussion. Bring your brown bag, and join us!
VISITING SCHOLAR SHEARER ARRIVES THIS WEEK
Ivan Shearer, the Challis Professor of International Law at the University of Sydney, will be in Bloomington from Jan. 25 through Feb. 21 as the George P. Smith Distinguished Visiting Professor-Chair. There will be a reception held in his honor from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, in the Faculty Lounge. During his visit, Shearer will meet with student groups, give guest lectures in classes, and be available for consultation on issues relating to international law. He will also give a public lecture next week (see "Events & Lectures").

LAW AND DRAMA SOCIETY TO PERFORM THE DINING ROOM
The Law and Drama Society will perform The Dining Room, by A.R. Gurney, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, and Friday, Jan. 30 in the Moot Court Room. Seating will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $2 each (cash only) and go on sale this week. They can also be purchased directly from 2L Dave Campbell.
Written in 1982, The Dining Room is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household. The action consists of a mosaic of interrelated scenes, which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. Renowned co-directors Beth Chitty and Erin Knowles have assembled a tremendous cast, featuring Justin "Solid Gold" Treasure, Anthony "Make It So" Spotts, Cassie "Stuck on You" Stekly, Komail "Noonan!" SHEARER TO SPEAK ON INTERNATIONAL LAW NEXT WEEK
On Monday, Feb. 2, Ivan Shearer, the George P. Smith Distinguished Visiting Professor-Chair, will give a public lecture, titled "In Fear of International Law," in which he will look at current international events where governments have been reluctant to acknowledge the applicability of international law or have failed to justify their positions in relation to international law.

TALK ON PHILANTHROPY AND THE RISE OF CIVIL SOCIETY NEXT WEEK
Kathleen McCarthy, a faculty member in history at the City University of New York, will speak at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5, in the Coronation Room (inside the Tudor Room) at the Indiana Memorial Union. Her topic will be her new book, American Creed: Philanthropy and the Rise of Civil Society, 1700-1865, which looks at the rise of civil society, paying particular attention to the roles of African Americans and women. On Jan. 22, 2004, Professor Kevin Brown delivered the 15th Annual Martin Luther King Lecture at Vanderbilt Law School in Nashville, Tenn. His remarks were entitled "Re-examination of Reverend King's I Have a Dream Speech in a Post-Desegregation Era."
Professor Hannah Buxbaum delivered a paper on judicial cooperation in evidence gathering at an E.U. conference on international litigation. Several weeks ago, she also gave a paper on judicial globalization and choice of forum at the annual meeting of the Association of American Law Schools.
Professor Robert Heidt published an article, "The Avid Sportsman and the Scope for Self-Protection: When Exculpatory Clauses Should Be Enforced," in 38 U. Richmond L. Rev. 381 (2004).
Professor Alex Tanford's new book, The Pretrial Process, has been published by LexisNexis.

WORKSHOP ON MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH EMPLOYERS THURSDAY
Career Services is hosting a workshop, "Researching Employers and Making Connections," at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, in room 120.
INDIANAPOLIS JOBS CONNECTION
Susan Macey, JD'80, will be working with the Career Services Office to help students connect with central Indiana employers. Macey works as a mediator, arbitrator, and private judge in Indianapolis. After graduation, she was a solo practitioner, worked as a staff attorney with several governmental agencies, and practiced labor and employment law at Barnes & Thornburg, Indianapolis.
Macey is very familiar with the court system in Marion County and surrounding areas, where she served as a court commissioner for four years and as a state trial court judge for an additional eight years. Some of you may know her as an adjunct professor here at the Law School, where she taught Mediation Skills during the 2003 spring and fall semesters. Macey is active with both the Indiana State Bar Association and the Indianapolis Bar Association and has forged alliances with many central Indiana legal employers over the last 20 years.
Macey will be available approximately one day per week to meet with students in the Career Services Office. Most weeks, she will be available on Fridays. Sign up in the Career Services Office or contact Bruce Farrand (bfarrand@indiana.edu; 855-0258) to schedule an appointment.

Phi Alpha Delta (PAD) will hold its first chapter meeting of the spring semester at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in room 120. Please plan to attend, as we will be discussing the events scheduled for this semester. We will also give a brief overview of the officer elections to be held in February. STUDENT BROWN V. BOARD ESSAYS DUE NEXT WEEK
All law students are invited to submit short essays on the subject "What Brown v. Board of Education Means to Me" to BLSA President Freedom Smith, by e-mail at fssmith@indiana.edu or by placing a printed document in her mailbox. Essays should be no longer than two pages, single-spaced, and should be submitted by Saturday, Feb. 7. A committee of students and faculty will select students to present their thoughts at a noon-time event on Feb. 16 in the Moot Court Room. The goal will be to present a variety of perspectives on Brown v. Board and to encourage a lively discussion. The Feb. 16 event is sponsored by BLSA.
The Law School is sponsoring several events during the spring semester in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's announcement of its decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. Events will be open to all members of the Law School community. Watch the ILA for more details and events.
STUDENT AMBASSADOR VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Admissions Office is seeking student volunteers to participate in the Student Ambassador Program. As a student ambassador, you will give prospective applicants and visitors tours of the school, take them to classes, and answer general questions about the school, program, and community.
