"MILITANT ISLAM AND THE WAR ON TERROR" TUESDAY
Daniel Pipes, director of the Middle East Forum and a member of the presidentially-appointed board of the U.S. Institute of Peace, will present a lecture, "Militant Islam and the War on Terror," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, in room 124 of Jordan Hall. Pipes, who received his PhD in history from Harvard University in 1978, has taught at the University of Chicago, Harvard, and the U.S. Naval War College. He is a prize-winning columnist from the New York Post, the author of several books on Middle Eastern politics, and a frequent political expert on television news programs such as ABC World News, CBS Reports, Crossfire, the News Hour with Jim Lehrer, Nightline, and The O'Reilly Factor. The lecture is sponsored by IU Central Eurasian Studies and the IU Ottoman and Modern Turkish Studies Chair.

Professor Pat Baude will be at the University of Notre Dame on Thursday, Dec. 4, and Friday, Dec. 5, presenting a paper on "The Spirit of Liberty in the Fog of War," as part of a symposium on "The Changing Laws of War."
Professor Fred Cate testified before the New Jersey legislature on the extent to which address and telephone information in government records should be made public.
Professor Sarah Jane Hughes has been asked by the permanent editorial board for the Uniform Commercial Code to advise it on changes to Articles 3 and 4 of the UCC that the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, signed in November, will require. Hughes expects to give her report in early January.
In mid November, Professor Ajay Mehrotra presented an overview of his recently completed doctoral dissertation, "Creating the Modern American Fiscal State: The Political Economy of U.S. Tax Policy, 1880-1930," at the Social Science History Association in Baltimore. Mehrotra's article, "Father Francis E. Lucey and President Franklin D. Roosevelt: A Neo-scholastic Legal Scholar's Ambivalent Reaction to the New Deal," was published in FDR, The Vatican, and the Roman Catholic Church in America, 1933-1945, David B. Woolner and Richard G. Kurial, eds. (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2003).
The fifth edition of Professor Alex Tanford's book, Indiana Trial Evidence Manual, has recently been published. The fifth edition includes a new chapter on electronic and computer evidence as well as completely revised chapters on expert witnesses and scientific evidence.

TOYS FOR TOTS CAMPAIGN BEGINS TODAY
Phi Delta Phi will be collecting toys for the Toys for Tots campaign from Monday, Dec. 1, to Friday, Dec. 12. Please place unwrapped toys in the collection boxes in the lobby. If you don't have time to shop for toys, Phi Delta Phi will be accepting monetary donations at a table in the lobby during lunch from Monday, Dec. 1, to Friday, Dec. 5. All toys and monetary donations will be delivered to the Marine Corps reserve programs in Indianapolis and Terre Haute, where they will be distributed to needy children.
